Chapter 64: Chasing the Fleeing Wolves
The pre-prepared traps couldn’t solve the entire pack at once, but they effectively weakened the wolves’ combat strength.
Seeing its subjects falling into pits and suffering injuries, the Alpha Wolf let out another shrill howl, its movements becoming even faster as it pounced.
Wei Xiao retreated quickly and commanded, “Fire!”
They had already doused the perimeter of the camp with a circle of pine oil. Upon hearing Wei Xiao’s order, Lin Zhijie thrust his torch forward, and a ring of fire instantly roared to life around the encampment.
Several wolves mid-pounce were unable to dodge in time, and the fire caught their fur. With their bodies ablaze, they spun frantically in place, some even stumbling deeper into the flames.
Seven or eight wolves managed to break in time. Seeing their companions suffering, they stared at the group of humans with venomous glares. The forest filled with the rising and falling howls of the wolves, a sound that made hearts tremble with fear.
For a moment, the smell of burnt fur mixed with the chaos of the howls. Injured wolves rolled on the ground, their smoking hides trailing behind them—it was a shocking scene.
Wei Xiao did not hesitate. “Archers, fire!”
If they didn’t hit the seven or eight healthy wolves now, those survivors would likely realize they lacked the advantage and try to flee. They had to settle the remaining mobile threats immediately. “Aim for the uninjured ones! Don’t let them escape!”
The crowd’s spirits lifted, and they drew their bows. The county constables had decent aim, but the workers and villagers struggled with accuracy. The village hunters managed to hit their marks, but a single arrow wasn’t enough to kill a wolf instantly; they could still run.
Fortunately, with the help of Wei Xiao, Lin Yuansheng, Zhijie, and Zhiyong, six of the eight healthy wolves were taken down in a flurry.
Only the Alpha Wolf and a young, powerful male remained, leaping and weaving through the shadows to dodge the arrows. The two wolves let out a final, unwilling howl. Under the firelight, everyone could clearly see the burning hatred in their eyes.
Then, the two wolves turned and bolted into the distance, about to vanish into the darkness.
Wei Xiao grabbed a spear and his bow, seized a torch, and with a sudden leap, cleared the fire circle to give chase in the direction of the fleeing wolves.
The crowd was stunned by his boldness. Lin Yuansheng was so anxious he forgot to call him “Brother Xiao” and shouted, “Young Master!”
Luckily, the villagers were too tense to notice the slip in address.
Wei Xiao didn’t look back. “Don’t follow me! Finish off the wolves here and spread the scent-masking powder immediately. Move!”
Lin Zhijie and Zhiyong couldn’t bear to let him go alone. After instructing the others to clean up the blood scent, they sprinted after Wei Xiao.
…
The Secret Pursuit
Yang Xue had been hiding in the tree the whole time. Seeing that they were well-prepared and organized, she stopped worrying and enjoyed the “Wolf-Human Battle” from her perch. It was better than a movie—a true visual shock.
But when she saw Wei Xiao chasing the two escapees, she scrambled down the tree. She followed quietly. If those two wolves escaped, it wouldn’t be good. Her family planned to live on this mountain for a long time, and for their safety, she had to see this through.
The Village Head’s nephew looks skilled, but what if he’s ambushed? Yang Xue thought of various possibilities, her pace quickening.
By the time Lin Zhijie and Zhiyong reached the woods, Wei Xiao was nowhere to be found. Breaking into a sweat, they began searching aimlessly, hoping to find a footprint.
Yang Xue, being alone, had fewer scruples. she pulled a spare solar-powered lamp from her Space. As she flipped the switch, her surroundings were instantly bathed in bright light.
She had seen clearly from the tree that the Alpha Wolf’s right leg had been struck by Wei Xiao’s arrow. All she had to do was follow the blood trail.
The forest had returned to a heavy silence.
Yang Xue searched and searched until she finally found the Alpha’s blood droplets. She followed the trail deeper into the woods. The Alpha was wounded; it couldn’t have gone far and likely sought a hidden thicket to recover.
She paid close attention to every bush she passed. Reaching a particularly dense patch of scrub, she shone her lamp inside and noticed something moving.
Yang Xue jumped back, pulling out a bottle of Spirit Spring water and several chemical reagents from her Space. If the Spirit Spring doesn’t work, I’ll have to use the corrosives, she thought. And if that fails… phosphorus powder, though I’d hate to start a forest fire. Actually, I’ll just jump back into space.
With her items ready, she picked up a long stick and boldly prodded the bushes. As the stick made contact, the rustling inside grew louder.
Yang Xue felt certain she had found the wolves. These beasts had to die for her to have peace of mind. She poked harder.
The next second, with a sudden whoosh, something flew out of the bushes!
Yang Xue recoiled, splashed the Spirit Spring water forward, and instantly vanished into her Space.
Safe inside, she intended to listen for movement outside, but to her shock, a screen appeared before her. It displayed a vivid, real-time view of the outside world.
The Space upgraded again! she realized.
She didn’t have time to explore the new features. She stared at the screen and saw… a wild pheasant happily drinking the Spirit Spring water she had spilled. The bird was pecking at the bottle with pure joy.
Yang Xue was furious. Darn it! It’s just a pheasant!
Since it wasn’t a wolf, she had nothing to fear. She flashed out of Space. Even as she approached, the pheasant didn’t run; it remained fixated on the remaining water in the bottle.
Seeing this, Yang Xue understood completely. The Spirit Spring water had a nearly fatal attraction for animals.
If you won’t run, don’t blame me for making you dinner.
Yang Xue lunged. The pheasant finally sensed danger and flapped its wings to escape, but it was too late. It tumbled right into her arms.
