Chapter 65: The Wolf Pack is Dealt With
The wild pheasant that tumbled into Yang Xue’s arms let out a shrill scream. Without hesitation, she tossed it directly into her space.
She pushed aside the bushes to find the pheasant’s nest and pocketed over a dozen eggs. Once finished, she continued her way up the slope.
Suddenly, her ears twitched. She froze in place and instantly pulled her solar-powered lamp back into the Space, plunging her surroundings into darkness. Hearing movement nearby, she began to creep toward the source of the sound.
Peering through the shadows, she saw Wei Xiao, spear in hand and torch raised high, locked in a standoff with the two remaining wolves. By the flickering light, Yang Xue noticed a patch of bright red soaking into the fabric of his sleeve.
He’s injured! she thought, watching tensely from a distance.
The Alpha Wolf glared at Wei Xiao with a ferocity that suggested it wanted to tear him to shreds. The tension snapped as both wolves lunged simultaneously, claws swiping at Wei Xiao.
Wei Xiao dodged with a fluid side-step and thrust his spear forward, but the wolves were fast, and he missed. The beasts immediately wheeled around for a second strike. Wei Xiao retreated, swinging his torch to drive them back, but they darted sideways and pounced again from a different angle.
With a swift maneuver of his spear, a muffled thud sounded as the tip tore through the flesh of the younger wolf. Enraged, the Alpha launched a frenzied assault, forcing Wei Xiao to back up repeatedly as he parried the blows.
Hidden behind a large tree, Yang Xue watched with wide-eyed admiration. That skill… it’s too cool! It was the kind of combat she had only ever seen in movies.
However, because his arm was wounded, the prolonged effort of swinging the heavy spear was taking its toll. Wei Xiao began to lose ground as the two wolves flanked him. Sensing his weakness, the Alpha slowed its pace, closing in step by step as if savoring the moment it would finally finish him.
Wei Xiao held his breath, waiting for them to leap so he could feed one the torch and the other the spear.
Seeing him cornered, Yang Xue realized she had to act. She needed to create a distraction to buy him an opening. She fumbled on the ground for a stone and chucked it with all her might at the Alpha Wolf’s backside.
Startled by the impact, the Alpha Wolf whipped its head around.
Wei Xiao, who had been laser-focused on every movement, didn’t miss this golden opportunity. He leaped forward, driving his spear straight toward the Alpha’s chest. The wolf sensed the danger and tried to turn back, but it was too late—it could only watch as the spear sank deep into its body.
The other injured wolf, seeing its leader fall, completely lost its composure. Wei Xiao yanked the spear out and spun around. As the remaining wolf tried to bolt, he threw the spear with lethal precision. With a final owoo, the beast hit the ground and didn’t get up.
Seeing that he had successfully handled them, Yang Xue felt relieved and prepared to sneak away to go back to sleep. But just as she turned to leave, Wei Xiao’s voice rang out: “Who’s there? Come out!”
Though he had been focused on the wolves, the sound of the stone and the wolf’s sudden distraction told him someone had been helping him from the shadows. He assumed it was Lin Yuansheng or perhaps the Lin brothers.
Yang Xue had no intention of revealing herself and quickened her pace. Unexpectedly, Wei Xiao raised his torch, the light cutting through the trees and illuminating her figure.
Caught in the light, Yang Xue turned around. “It’s me, Yang Xue.”
Wei Xiao was stunned. “How are you?”
Yang Xue gave a dry laugh. “Haha… just passing through. Just passing through.”
Wei Xiao raised an eyebrow. Passing through? Through the deep, dark forest in the middle of the night? And just happened to help him? He looked at her with a half-smile. “That is indeed quite a coincidence.”
Yang Xue gestured toward the two motionless wolves. “You should probably deal with those quickly, before the scent attracts other large predators.”
Just then, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the woods. Yang Xue frowned and said hurriedly, “Since your help has arrived, I’ll be going now.” Before he could say another word, she slipped away into the dark.
Wei Xiao stared at her retreating back, his eyes unreadable.
…
Aftermath
Lin Zhijie and Lin Zhiyong arrived, following the sound of the final howls, only to see the two wolves dead on the ground.
“Wei Xiao, are you alright?”
Wei Xiao turned to them. “I’m fine. We need to clean this up.”
As he turned, they finally saw his bloodied arm. “You’re hurt!”
Wei Xiao glanced at the wound and frowned. “It’s nothing, just a scratch.” He had chased the wolves here, only for them to vanish. He had been searching when they ambushed him from behind two separate trees. Luckily, he was alert, but the Alpha had still managed to catch him with a claw.
Lin Zhijie sighed. “The blood has soaked your whole sleeve, and you say it’s nothing?” The gash was clearly deep. Zhijie, who looked at Wei Xiao like a younger brother, insisted, “Go back and treat that wound immediately. We can handle things here.”
Wei Xiao didn’t argue and headed back. Once he was gone, the Lin brothers sprinkled medicinal powder to mask the scent of blood on the ground and the carcasses. They covered the remaining stains with soil and leaves before each hoisting a wolf over their shoulders to depart.
…
When Yang Xue returned home, she found her entire family awake. Even Yang Yu and Yang Tian were sitting up, waiting anxiously. Seeing her return unharmed, they finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“Xue’er, were the wolves dealt with?”
Yang Xue nodded. “Yes, they’ve all been eliminated.”
The family let out a collective breath. “That’s good, that’s good.”
Yang San asked, “Was anyone hurt?”
Yang Xue thought for a moment. “One person. The Village Head’s nephew.”
Qian Yue’e and Yang San immediately showed concern. “He’s hurt? Is it serious?” They remembered how Wei Xiao had spoken up for them before.
Yang Xue recalled the scene. “Not too serious. His arm was clawed, but he’ll be fine.”
Hearing that he was okay, they were relieved. He seemed like a good lad; it would have been a shame if something terrible had happened to him.
