Chapter 63: The Battle is Imminent
As soon as they heard Yang Xue wanted to go out, Yang San and the others were naturally unwilling to let her. It was a pack of wolves, after all—far too dangerous. For Yang Xue to go out now was practically delivering herself into the wolves’ mouths.
Yang San stood up. “Xue’er, don’t go. It’s dangerous.”
Qian Yue’e also immediately rose to grab Yang Xue. “Xue’er, your father is right. It’s too dangerous, don’t go.”
Yang Shuang also looked at Yang Xue with disapproval.
Yang Xue patted Qian Yue’e’s hand and said to them, “It’s alright. I just dreamed of a way to deal with the wolf pack’s attack. Since I dreamed of the solution, it must be a sign that I should go help. Don’t worry, nothing will go wrong.” If things go south, I’ll just hide in the Space, she thought.
Hearing that Yang Xue had dreamed of a way to handle the wolves and wanted to help, Yang San was still uneasy. He quickly said, “What method? Tell me, and I’ll go.”
“Dad, there’s no time to explain. The wolves are already nearing the coal mine camp. I have to get there as soon as possible. Besides, you need to stay here to protect Mom and the others. If you leave, what will they do?”
Yang Xue didn’t give them a chance to hesitate further. She let go of Qian Yue’e’s hand and quickly walked out of the cave. “Hide well, don’t come out, and don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine!”
“Xue’er!”
Before they could stop her, she had already vanished into the darkness outside.
…
Chaos at the Coal Mine
After leaving the cave, Yang Xue headed straight for the coal mine camp.
At the same time, the night watchman at the camp sensed something was wrong. He faintly heard the howling of wolves, and his nerves instantly pulled taut. Wei Xiao, who had been leaning against a tree trunk with his eyes closed, snapped them open in an instant.
As Wei Xiao opened his eyes, Lin Yuansheng also woke up groggily. “Brother Xiao, is there something happening?”
The brothers Lin Zhijie and Lin Zhiyong also immediately became alert, scanning the surroundings for movement.
Wei Xiao stood up, surveyed the area, and furrowed his brows. “Wake them up. The wolves are here.”
The watchman and the Lin brothers immediately roused the sleeping men. “Get up! Everyone get up! The wolves are coming!”
Hearing the word “wolves,” everyone was instantly wide awake.
“My god, it’s true. The wolves actually came.”
“I was wondering today if the news was wrong. After all, it’s been so peaceful these past few days.”
Wei Xiao listened intently to the movements around them. Everything became restless; the very air was filled with agitation. Even the slight breeze seemed to carry a scent of danger.
“Light the torches, quickly! They’ve arrived,” Wei Xiao said, staring at a patch of green lights ahead.
Lin Zhijie and Lin Zhiyong hurried the group to light torches. Some grabbed bows and arrows, others took long spears; everyone had to have a weapon to deal with the wolves. Having practiced their drills today, they quickly fell into defensive positions.
Once set, they saw a group of creatures with deep, eerie green eyes standing several yards away. Having never seen such a sight, many felt their legs turn to jelly. Lin Zhijie and Lin Zhiyong had lived in the village for years and had never seen a single wolf, let alone such a large pack. Their hearts were deeply shaken.
Seeing that they had been discovered, the alpha wolf lifted its head and let out a long, piercing howl. The sound tore through the silent night sky, chilling everyone to the bone.
“W-what do we do? Can we survive this?”
“I just wanted to earn some money to support my wife and kids, I don’t want to die here.”
“This… this looks terrifying. I’m scared.”
Among those mining coal were soldiers from the county office, official workers, and villagers. Seeing such a large pack of wolves staring at them with glowing green eyes, it was inevitable that they would be afraid.
Lin Zhijie quickly reassured them, “Don’t be afraid! We’ve made preparations and have weapons in hand. With so many of us, we can definitely drive them back. Everyone must follow orders—don’t lose your footing!”
…
The Confrontation
As Yang Xue neared the camp, she heard the wolf howls echoing through the dark, silent forest. It was indeed frightening. She paused for a moment, rubbed her arms, and then continued forward. She hoped that by the time she arrived, no one would be injured.
She didn’t want to see any bloody corpses and quickened her pace.
When she was a short distance away, she saw the camp ablaze with torchlight, illuminating the night sky. There was no sound of fighting yet. Yang Xue jogged toward the light.
Once she was close enough to see the situation, she stopped and climbed a large tree using both hands and feet. She didn’t know the exact status of the battle yet and couldn’t act rashly; she needed a clear view first.
From her high vantage point, she saw the humans and the wolves in a tense standoff. Neither side had moved yet. The wolves were wary of the fire and hesitated, staring at the humans with their haunting eyes.
Wei Xiao stood at the very front, his locked brows reflecting his intense focus. A standoff was not a solution. If the wolves suddenly scattered, the consequences would be disastrous. They had to deal with the pack tonight to be truly safe.
Everyone present understood this, but no one dared to strike first.
Wei Xiao reached out to Lin Yuansheng. “Give me the bow.”
Lin Yuansheng immediately handed it over. Seeing Wei Xiao draw the bow to its full extent, the tension in the group spiked. Everyone watched his movements without blinking.
With a sharp whoosh, the arrow left the string and flew straight toward the pack.
Instantly, a shrill wolf cry tore through the silence of the forest.
With that single shot from Wei Xiao, the battle erupted. The alpha wolf let out a roar that made hearts tremble. As the howl fell, a group of green-eyed shadows pounced forward like arrows released from a bow.
“Trigger the traps in front!”
As the wolves charged, the crowd panicked for a moment, but Wei Xiao’s voice brought back a sliver of rationality. When the wolves were about a yard away, they pulled the triggers on the prepared traps.
The traps went off—some wolves fell into pits, some were crushed by falling rocks, and others were struck by rapidly sliding logs.
In an instant, the forest was filled with the sounds of howling wolves.
