Chapter 62: Alert! The Wolves are Coming
Yang Yu and Yang Tian happily showed off their small iron rakes to Qian Yue’e and Yang Shuang.
“Mom, Big Sister, look! The second Sister bought these specifically for us.”
Qian Yue’e and Yang Shuang were amazed. They had never seen farm tools designed specifically for children. Little did they know, these tools weren’t actually made for kids; they were designed for precision work, allowing a person to squat and clear a small, specific area with ease.
After the brief excitement, the family set to work in earnest. However, it wasn’t long before the midday sun became unbearable. Yang Xue squinted at the sky, her eyes stinging from the glare. She felt a surge of regret—she had been so focused on getting the tools from the Space that she completely forgot to bring out straw hats.
Seeing her struggle, Yang Shuang grabbed some discarded vines and grass from the cleared patch. With a few deft twists and weaves, she fashioned a crude hat.
“Put this on,” Yang Shuang said, handing it to Yang Xue. “It’ll block the sun a bit.”
Yang Xue took it. It was just a ring of weeds and vines woven together—hardly a masterpiece, but better than nothing. “Actually, I did buy straw hats,” Yang Xue lied smoothly. “I hid them on the mountain and forgot to bring them down. I’ll have to get them tomorrow.”
“It’s alright, we’re used to the sun,” Yang Shuang replied warmly. “Your health isn’t great; if you’re tired, go rest in the shade.”
…
Exhaustion and Anticipation
The family worked until high noon, then huddled under the shade of a tree to eat lunch. Yang San and Huang Zhongcai had already cut many pillars. They planned to spend the afternoon gathering bamboo and thatch so they could start building the hut the next day.
By evening, everyone was on the verge of collapse from exhaustion. Yang Xue looked at the blisters beginning to form on her palms and sighed. She considered sneaking out late at night to bring the tractor out of her Space to finish the tilling. If her family asked, she’d just say a deity from her dreams helped her. She didn’t care if they believed it; a “miracle” was the only explanation that would work.
While Yang Xue was too tired to speak, the others were still in a state of high spirits. To them, having so much land was a dream come true; they would gladly work themselves to death for it.
However, as dinner ended, a sudden realization hit Yang Xue. She couldn’t go tilling tonight. Something much bigger was about to happen: the wolf pack was descending.
She immediately went to find the Huang siblings. She gave them two knives and warned them to prepare. “Keep a fire burning outside the cave tonight,” she instructed sternly. “Do not let it go out.”
Next, she checked the large cave. The remaining villagers had already moved their belongings back to the village after being warned by the Village Head. The vast space was now empty. Yang Xue noted how spacious it was—perhaps her family could move there in the future.
…
The Silent Night
Returning to her own cave, she found Yang San already tending a large bonfire at the entrance.
“I wonder if the coal mine is prepared,” Yang San muttered, staring anxiously toward the excavation site. “Can they hold off the wolves?”
Yang Xue stood beside him, her brow furrowed. Wolves were brutal. Without perfect preparation, the workers faced a gruesome fate.
At the coal mine, tension was thick. The Village Head had initially suggested retreating to the village, but he feared the wolves would follow the scent of humans and attack the elderly and children in their homes. Thus, the men stayed on the mountain. The County Magistrate had provided weapons and ordered traps to be set. It was destined to be a sleepless night.
Wei Xiao and Lin Yuansheng were also there. Having practiced martial arts since childhood, they felt they could help.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, darkness swallowed the forest. Yang San paced restlessly, torn between wanting to help at the mine and staying to protect his wife and children.
“Dad, go to sleep. It’ll be fine,” Yang Xue said, trying to soothe them. “The pack won’t come down until the middle of the night.”
Qian Yue’e’s face was a mask of worry. “How can we sleep? If they suddenly appear, we’re finished. We’re staying awake.”
“But we have work tomorrow. If you don’t sleep, you won’t have the strength.”
Her words only made them more anxious. To sleep or not to sleep? That was the terrifying question. Yang Shuang and the kids were equally frightened, having grown up on stories of man-eating beasts.
“Xue’er, will we really be okay?” Yang Shuang whispered.
“Yes,” Yang Xue said firmly. “We’ll be fine.”
Despite her assurance, the fear remained. The family sat huddled together, watching the flickering shadows cast by the fire at the cave mouth. Yang Xue, however, couldn’t match their stamina. After a day of back-breaking labor, her eyelids felt like lead. While the others stayed wide-eyed with terror, she drifted into a deep sleep.
…
The Call of the Forest
In the dead of night, while the family was nodding off in their “fishing” style—jerking awake only to drift off again—Yang Xue’s eyes suddenly snapped open. She felt it. The wolves were here.
She saw Yang Yu and Yang Tian finally give in to exhaustion, slumped over asleep. She almost smiled at how cute they looked, even in a crisis.
Yang San’s blurry eyes cleared instantly when he saw her sit up. “Xue’er… are they here?”
The word “wolves” acted like a bucket of cold water on Qian Yue’e and Yang Shuang. They jolted awake, trembling.
Yang Xue nodded. “I think so.” She stood up. “Dad, stay here and guard the family. I’m going to take a look.”
She didn’t want to wake up to a mountain covered in corpses. During her nap, she had a vision: the Spirit Spring water from her Space could make wolves docile.
She wanted to test it. If the Spirit Spring truly worked, the deep, dangerous forests would no longer be a place of fear for her, but a place of opportunity.
