Chapter 61: Farm Tools from the Space
Yang Xue walked behind a thicket of bushes. After ensuring no one could see her, she pulled several farming tools out of her space.
The storage room on the first floor of the experimental building in her Space was filled with stacks of agricultural equipment. She took out hoes, iron rakes, shovels—about five or six of each.
Once she had them all out, she tried to hoist them onto her shoulders to carry them back, only to realize there were far too many. She simply couldn’t carry them all at once. Left with no choice, she set the tools down and went back to call Yang San and the others for help.
When Yang San and the kids followed her behind the bushes and saw the pile of tools lying on the ground, they were stunned. Yang San’s finger trembled as he pointed at the heap. “Xue’er, where… where did all these come from?”
“Dad, I bought them in town. Since our family bought land, we naturally need tools to work it, so I picked these up.”
“But you didn’t need to buy so many, surely?”
“It’s not too many, Dad. We’ll use all of them eventually. Don’t worry, they didn’t cost much. These aren’t new, so I got them at half price.”
Yang San looked closely; the tools were indeed used. Some were even caked in a thick layer of old mud. “How… why would someone sell their livelihood to you?”
“I don’t know. Apparently, a wealthy family was moving away and couldn’t take everything with them, so they put them up for sale. I didn’t ask too many questions. Dad, Xiaoyu, Xiaotian—hurry up and grab the tools so we can head down.”
Yang Yu and Yang Tian nodded enthusiastically. “Okay!”
Yang Xue didn’t give the little ones anything too heavy; she handed them a few small picks and miniature rakes. The group made their way down the mountain toward their fields.
Along the way, they saw a crowd of villagers gathered together, discussing something animatedly. Yang Xue could guess what was happening—the family from yesterday was likely following her advice to salvage their rice. Other villagers, seeing this, were naturally curious and asking questions.
“Dad, Second Sister, look how lively it is over there! Should we go check it out?”
Yang San had no interest in watching the commotion, and since Yang Xue already knew what it was about, she didn’t want to go either. Fearing the younger ones would be too curious, she explained, “They’re discussing how to save the rice crops.”
The kids looked at her in awe. “Second Sister, how do you know?”
Yang Xue didn’t hide it. “Because I was the one who told them the method.”
“Really? Second Sister, you’re amazing!”
Yang San asked quietly, “The method to save the rice… did you dream of that too?” If so, he thought, his family would never have to worry about crop failure again.
“Yes, I dreamt of it. But I told the villagers I read it in a book.”
Yang San nodded. “Yes, that’s the right way to put it.”
…
The Twenty Acres
When they reached their own land, Yang Yu and Yang Tian immediately asked, “Dad, which part is ours?”
Yang San gestured toward the vast expanse. The kids were frozen in shock. In their minds, “twenty acres” was just a number; only by seeing it with their own eyes did they realize how massive it actually was.
Yang Yu covered her mouth. “Oh my god… it’s so big. We’ll never go hungry again.”
Yang Tian’s eyes were wide. “With all this land, when the vegetables grow, can we make lots and lots of money?”
Yang San patted their heads. “That’s right. We won’t go hungry anymore.”
After a moment of awe, it was time to work. Since Yang San needed to build the thatched hut, he had to go to the hill to fell trees and head to the bamboo grove for supplies. The bamboo grove was to the east and quite a distance away, so he started with the trees first.
Yang Tian wanted to follow his father, but seeing as he couldn’t help much with heavy lifting, Yang San told him to stay with Yang Xue and Yang Yu to weed the land.
Weeding was familiar territory for Yang Xue, but this land was different from her experimental plots back in her previous life. In school, her professors made them weed by hand rather than using machines, but that was just weeding.
Here, the land didn’t just have grass; it was overgrown with shrubs, crawling with brambles, and littered with rocks that needed clearing. It was no wonder this was the cheapest “inferior” land.
If only I had machines, Yang Xue thought. She could finish this in minutes. There were actually several machines parked in the center of her Space’s experimental building. But she had no way to bring them out. She let out a silent sigh. Stuck with manual labor it is.
Yang Yu and Yang Tian, however, were thrilled to have tools suited to their size.
“Second Sister, is this the surprise you talked about?” they asked, stroking the small tools affectionately.
Yang Xue smiled, relieved they were so easily pleased. “Mhm, do you like them?”
“We love them!”
While the three of them cleared a small patch, Qian Yue’e and Yang Shuang arrived. Huang Zhongqing immediately put down her things and joined the wedding. Yang Xue pointed out where Yang San was to Huang Zhongcai, and he went off to help with the construction.
When Qian Yue’e and Yang Shuang saw the pile of tools, they too were stunned. “Where did these come from?” Qian Yue’e asked. “Did you borrow them? But you couldn’t borrow so many at once…”
Yang Xue repeated her story about the “moving family” selling things at half price. Hearing it was a bargain, their initial worry about “wasting money” vanished.
Qian Yue’e picked up a hoe, looking at it fondly. In the past, they never had enough tools for everyone to have their own. Those without tools had to use their bare hands. Now, everyone had their own equipment.
“Xue’er, you really are decisive,” Qian Yue’e admitted. “If I had seen those, I would have hesitated and maybe only picked two.” She knew her own nature; even though she was changing, she still struggled to spend money.
She realized then that for future decisions, she should listen to her daughter. Ever since Yang Xue started having those dreams, she had become so capable. Perhaps, she thought, this is heaven’s way of looking after our daughter and our family.
