Chapter 58: The Dream—A Wolf Pack Is Coming Down the Mountain
That night, Yang Xue had another dream, and once again, it was not a good one.
In the dream, during a silent night, a pack of creatures with glowing green eyes sprinted down from the high mountains. The workers stationed at the coal mine bore the brunt of the disaster. Over twenty wolves descended, each one more savage than the last.
This time, Yang Xue even dreamt of the exact timing: tomorrow night.
In the vision, twenty-odd wolves would storm down and injure people. Although her family’s cave had a sturdy door that kept the wolves at bay, the family was still terrified. Huang Zhongcai and Huang Zhongqing were mostly unharmed, but Huang Zhongcai’s hand was clawed while fighting a wolf. It was only thanks to Huang Zhongqing’s quick thinking—lighting a fire to drive them away—that the siblings survived.
The moment Yang Xue woke up, she told her family everything. The mere description was enough to strike fear into their hearts.
Yang San immediately prepared to find the Village Head, but Yang Xue told him to take Qian Yue’e along. This time, the story would be that Qian Yue’e and the children had seen traces of a wolf pack while gathering wild herbs on the mountain, so the County Magistrate and the Village Head could take precautions.
…
Facing the Magistrate
Yang San and Qian Yue’e set off to find the Village Head together. By now, Yang San was becoming more accustomed to these high-stakes meetings.
When they found the Village Head, he was in the courtyard drinking tea with the County Magistrate and the Secretary. Because of the coal mine excavation, the Magistrate had stayed in the village to oversee things personally. Since the Village Head’s house was the best in the village, he had offered it to the officials while he moved his own family into a derelict shack.
Seeing the County Magistrate and the Secretary there, Yang San and Qian Yue’e felt a surge of nerves. But the matter was too important to back down now.
“Yang San, what brings you here?” the Village Head asked after greeting them.
Fearing his wife would be too shy to speak, Yang San took the lead. “Village Head, it’s like this: while the children’s mother was digging for wild herbs yesterday, she accidentally found traces of a wolf pack near the coal mine. We felt we had to tell you. The mine workers need to be protected; she says the tracks suggest there are quite a lot of them. If they attack at night, we’ll be caught completely off guard.”
The Village Head knew Yang San wasn’t one to make things up. He immediately turned to the Magistrate with a serious expression. “Lord Magistrate, if a wolf pack has been spotted, we must take precautions.”
The Magistrate, however, wasn’t as tense. “Could you have missed it?” he asked. With so many people on the mountain, he doubted wolves would dare approach.
Qian Yue’e didn’t dare look the Magistrate in the eye, but she shook her head firmly. “I didn’t see it wrong. There were tracks, and we even saw a glimpse of them passing by.”
This was exactly what Yang Xue had coached them to say, anticipating every skeptical question they might face.
The Magistrate remained skeptical. “If you saw the wolves, why didn’t they attack you?”
“Lord Magistrate, they saw the wolves, but the wolves didn’t see them. Since the wolves didn’t notice them, they wouldn’t attack, naturally.”
Before Qian Yue’e could answer, a young man’s voice rang out from the side. Everyone turned to look at Wei Xiao.
Wei Xiao didn’t mind the attention and continued, “Lord Magistrate, it just seems to me that not long ago, you wanted to arrest my uncle for ‘knowing something and not reporting it.’ Now that they are reporting what they know, you are doubting them. You don’t believe them, do you?”
The Magistrate looked embarrassed.
The Village Head suppressed a laugh. To prevent the Magistrate from taking offense at the youth’s bluntness, he quickly feigned anger and scolded Wei Xiao. “Zhiyuan! How dare you speak to the Magistrate like that? Such a strange report—isn’t it only natural for the Magistrate to be skeptical? How could he blindly believe everything we say? He must have his own judgment!”
The Magistrate thought: Well, well… you didn’t let me off the hook either.
“Apologize to the Magistrate at once!” the Village Head shouted.
Wei Xiao was quick to play along. “I’m sorry, Lord Magistrate. I spoke out of turn.”
The Magistrate’s expression was stiff. Not long ago, he had accused someone of withholding information; now that someone had brought information, he was dismissing it. It was a slap to his own face. However, he quickly regained his composure.
“It’s fine. I assume you’re just worried for your uncle. I don’t blame you,” the Magistrate said. “As for the wolf pack, it does require attention. Regardless of whether it’s true, as long as the possibility exists, we must take precautions. I was inconsiderate just now. Secretary, go make the arrangements immediately.”
The Secretary, who had been feeling awkward for his boss, was impressed by the Magistrate’s ability to act like nothing had happened. “Yes, I’ll see to it right away.”
…
A Promise of Reward
Feeling out of place in the presence of the Magistrate, Yang San and Qian Yue’e wanted to leave as soon as the business was done. But just as they prepared to excuse themselves, the Magistrate called out.
“Yang San.”
Yang San’s heart skipped a beat, and sweat began to bead on his forehead. Beside him, Qian Yue’e gripped her hem tightly. “Lord Magistrate… do you have further instructions?”
Seeing their nervous state, the Magistrate sighed inwardly. Are these really that girl Yang Xue’s parents? Why are they so timid? They’re nothing like her. It’s a miracle such parents raised a daughter as sharp and bright as Yang Xue.
He softened his tone. “Don’t be nervous. I just wanted to say that if your report is true, I will reward you handsomely.”
“We wouldn’t dare,” Yang San stammered.
The Magistrate waved it off. “If it’s true, you’ve prevented a disaster. A reward is only right. If you don’t want to come pick it up, just let that girl Yang Xue come find me for it.”
He actually quite enjoyed talking to Yang Xue; her spirit made him feel years younger.
Yang San and Qian Yue’e didn’t know how to respond, so the Village Head stepped in. “Lord Magistrate, let’s wait for the results first. If it turns out to be a mistake, that would be for the best. If not, they’ve indeed saved us all, and a reward would be proper.”
Yang San and Qian Yue’e looked at the Village Head with deep gratitude.
