Chapter 57: The Space’s Land Doesn’t Need Her to Farm Itself
When the villagers asked about the reward, Yang San and Qian Yue’e told them they received twenty taels.
To the villagers, twenty taels was an incredibly enviable sum. However, when they heard that Yang San and Qian Yue’e had spent all of it on land, their envy turned to shock—and then to pity. They thought the couple had gone mad.
Twenty taels could buy two acres of high-quality fertile land with change to spare. Even sloped land would get them three or four acres. But when the couple admitted they had bought twenty acres of “inferior land”—worse even than sloped land—with plans to grow vegetables, the villagers felt they were throwing their money away.
They collectively tried to persuade them to change their minds. They urged the couple to go back to the Village Head before the deeds were finalized and swap the inferior plots for proper fertile fields.
Yang San and Qian Yue’e knew the villagers meant well, but being cornered by a chattering crowd was overwhelming. Fortunately, Yang Xue arrived, giving them a perfect excuse to escape back home.
Yang Xue led her parents away, and after some walking, she asked to see the new land. “Dad, Mom, where is the plot?”
“It’s over there, twenty acres,” Yang San pointed out.
As they reached the destination—a vast area in front of a small hill separating Niao’er Village from the neighboring town—Yang Xue felt a strange sense of familiarity. Looking at the shape and layout of the terrain, her eyes suddenly widened.
Holy cow! Isn’t this exactly like the land that was just unlocked in my Space?
She realized that the Space had replicated the external land one-to-one. This meant that the plots in Space didn’t require her to farm them manually. As long as things were planted on the land outside, the corresponding crops would automatically appear in Space.
Yang Xue had been worried about how she would manage so much extra land on her own, but now that worry vanished. She made a secret decision: the crops from the outside world would be for the family’s use and income, but the “duplicate” produce in her Space would be her private stock to sell for personal savings. Having her own nest egg was the only way to truly feel at ease.
…
Meeting the New Help
When they returned to the mountain, dinner was ready. Yang San and Qian Yue’e could smell the aroma of meat from a distance. While Yang San still felt a bit of a “heartache” over the expense—thinking money should be saved for big events rather than spent on meat—his wife’s reminder that spending on family wasn’t “waste” helped him accept it. Seeing everyone so happy made it worth it.
After lunch, the parents took some vegetables to visit Huang Zhongcai and his sister at the smaller cave. Yang Xue went along to introduce them.
They found Huang Zhongcai chopping wood while his sister, Zhongqing, was cleaning the cave.
“This is my father, and this is my mother,” Yang Xue introduced.
“Big Sister, Brother-in-law,” the siblings greeted them politely. Yang Xue had already briefed her parents on the “roles” they were playing, so the family titles didn’t surprise them.
Yang San, who had spent his life being ordered around by others, felt awkward about being a “master.” When Yang Xue told him to give them tasks, he instinctively waved it off. “No, no, there’s nothing that needs help.”
Qian Yue’e nudged him, reminding him that they had bought these people specifically to help with the heavy labor. Yang Xue stepped in to bridge the gap. “Let them come over to our cave tomorrow morning, and we’ll arrange the work then.”
Before leaving, Qian Yue’e handed the vegetables to Huang Zhongqing. “Child, take these for now. You can pick wild herbs on the mountain later, like we do.”
Huang Zhongqing hesitated. She recognized the vegetables as the fresh ones Yang Xue had bought in town. “Big Sister, we can’t take these. Yang Xue already gave us grain.”
Yang Xue saw her hesitation and said, “Just take them. Just make sure to work hard for our family from now on.”
Huang Zhongqing looked to her brother, who gave a small nod. Only then did she accept the gift, her heart swelling with gratitude. She vowed to herself that she would work her hardest to repay this family’s kindness.
Yang Xue had no idea that a few simple vegetables had just secured the undying loyalty of her new employees.
