Chapter 59: Obtained the Land Deed
As Yang San and Qian Yue’e prepared to leave, the Village Head followed them out.
“I was planning to look for you in a bit, but since you came to me first, it saved me a trip,” he said.
“I’ve already processed the land deed for you. Here it is.”
After measuring the land for them yesterday, the Village Head had immediately gone to see the County Magistrate and the Secretary. He happened to mention that Yang Xue’s family was buying land and that he needed to make a trip to the county office.
The Magistrate wasn’t one to dawdle. Upon hearing that the Village Head was heading out to handle the paperwork for Yang Xue’s family, he immediately sent his own men back to the office to get it done. Thus, the Village Head had the deed in hand by late yesterday.
However, since he received it so late, he hadn’t gone up the mountain to find Yang San. He had planned to go today, but Yang San and his wife had beaten him to it.
Seeing the deed, Yang San and Qian Yue’e were both surprised and ecstatic. “Is the deed done already?”
“Mm. Take a look. If everything is correct, keep it safe. It would be a disaster if this got lost.”
Yang San and Qian Yue’e couldn’t really read it, but they saw the official government seal and trusted that the Village Head wouldn’t cheat them.
“Good, good! We’ll definitely keep it safe. Thank you, Village Head! Thank you so much!”
They had expected it to take at least a few days; they were overjoyed it happened so quickly.
“No need for thanks.” By buying land, they were also contributing to the village’s revenue.
With that, the Village Head reached into his robe and pulled out one tael of silver. “Here. You gave me too much money yesterday; this is the one tale remaining.”
When the Village Head had handed the money to the Secretary yesterday, he realized Yang San had given him an extra tale.
Seeing the silver, Yang San and Qian Yue’e exchanged a look and quickly said, “Village Head, we didn’t give too much.”
“You helped us handle all the business of buying land; this is what you deserve for your hard work.”
While the Village Head did usually collect a small fee for such tasks, it was never this much. Usually, it was a few copper coins, or at most a few dozen—sometimes just some wild herbs or home-grown vegetables. He didn’t dare take a whole tale; it would make him look like a tyrant exploiting the villagers.
“It doesn’t take that much. Take it back.”
Yang San spoke quickly: “Village Head, please keep it. We have to head back now.”
Before the words had even finished, Yang San was already pulling Qian Yue’e away.
The Village Head called out from behind: “Hey! Yang San! Wait a second! Take this back, I really can’t accept it!”
Hearing his calls, Yang San and Qian Yue’e only walked faster.
Xue’er had told them that the more they paid, the faster things would get done. Since the Village Head had managed to get the deed so quickly, he must have put in a lot of effort. Therefore, they couldn’t take that silver back.
Clutching the deed, they hurried toward the mountain. They had to get back and tell the children the good news: their family were now official landowners!
…
Diligent Helpers
Upon returning to the cave, they saw Huang Zhongcai splitting wood outside while Huang Zhongqing was nearby organizing the firewood. The two were incredibly diligent.
After having a quick breakfast of porridge, the siblings hurried over. However, when they arrived, Yang San and his wife weren’t there. Yang Shuang, Yang Yu, and Yang Tian were also nowhere to be found.
Yang Xue hadn’t woken up yet. When she heard someone calling outside, she got up, saw it was the siblings, yawned, and gestured for them to make themselves at home before heading back to rest.
Huang Zhongcai and his sister had come specifically to work for their masters. Finding no work to do made them feel uneasy. After wandering around, they decided to find some work for themselves: splitting wood. Lacking an axe, Huang Zhongcai used a wood-chopping knife, splitting the logs with speed and precision.
Qian Yue’e asked them, “Have you two had breakfast? If not, there’s porridge in the kitchen.”
“Big Sister, we’ve already eaten,” Huang Zhongqing replied quickly. She felt this family was too polite; they didn’t treat her and her brother like servants at all.
In truth, Yang San and Qian Yue’e simply weren’t used to acting like masters.
Hearing her parents’ voices, Yang Xue walked out. She had just gone into her Space to wash up. She was incredibly grateful for the Space; otherwise, the hygiene conditions of this era would have driven her crazy.
“Dad, Mom, how did it go?” After her morning nap, Yang Xue was now refreshed.
“We told them. The Magistrate has already sent the Secretary to strengthen defenses.”
“Mm, that’s good.”
Yang San and Qian Yue’e looked around and didn’t see the other children. “Where are your sister, Xiaoyu, and Xiaotian?” Good news felt better when the whole family was together.
“Oh, they probably went to pick wild herbs.” With no land to farm yet, their daily routine consisted of gathering firewood and herbs.
“Alright, we’ll wait for them.”
Seeing the suppressed smiles on their faces, Yang Xue guessed what the news was. Given their expressions, it had to be about the land. She was quite surprised the deed had been processed so quickly.
…
The Safest Place
They didn’t have to wait long before Yang Shuang and the younger ones returned with baskets of herbs, some of which they shared with the Huang siblings.
Seeing everyone assembled, Yang San announced that they had obtained the land deed. Yang Shuang and the kids were naturally thrilled.
Yang Xue looked at the deed in Yang San’s hand and thought for a moment. “Dad, let me put the deed away. I know a place to hide things where no one will ever find them.”
If she threw it into space, no one could even dream of finding it. In the coming days, the whole family would be busy in the fields. Malicious people might take the chance to sneak into their cave while they are away. She wouldn’t feel safe hiding it anywhere else but the Space.
Yang San hesitated. The deed was incredibly important. What if Yang Xue didn’t put it away properly and lost it?
But then he remembered that Yang Xue was the one who hid all their silver. Perhaps she really did have a perfect hiding spot. He didn’t know where he could hide it to feel at ease anyway.
Maybe she had even “dreamt” of a safe place to hide things. Her dreams were incredibly accurate lately, so it must be safe.
Yang San was lost in thought and didn’t respond immediately.
Thinking he was unwilling, Yang Xue said, “Dad, if you’re not comfortable, give me the deed first. I’ll go inside and hide it, then you go in and look for it. If you can find it, you can keep the deed yourself. If not, let me hide it for you, okay?”
