Chapter 56: A Way to Salvage the Rice
When Yang Yu and Yang Tian heard that they could build a big house and plant such delicious apples in the yard in the future, their hearts were instantly filled with anticipation, and their eyes sparkled as they looked at Yang Xue.
“Second Sister, really?”
Yang Xue nodded. “Of course. But the premise is that we must work hard, live well, and earn a lot of money.”
“Yes, Second Sister! We want to earn money, lots and lots of money.”
A cunning light flashed in Yang Xue’s eyes as she asked, “Then how do you plan on earning it?”
This question stumped them both. They scratched their heads in frustration.
Yang Xue suppressed a laugh. “If you want to make money, you have to stand by my side from now on. You do whatever I say, understand?”
“As long as you’re willing to behave and listen to me, I’ll take you to live in a big house and eat meat at every meal.”
Of course, Yang Yu and Yang Tian listened to Yang Xue. Their second sister could dream, and everything she dreamed of came true. She was incredible, so following her could never be wrong.
“Second Sister, we will definitely listen to you. Whatever you ask us to do, we’ll do it perfectly.”
Yang Xue nodded with satisfaction. “Good, I believe you.”
Yang Shuang watched the interaction between her younger siblings from the side, a faint smile on her face. In truth, she also had a strong feeling that Yang Xue really could lead them to a better life.
Yang Xue stood up. “You guys stay and guard the home. I’m going to look for Dad and Mom.”
Yang Shuang nodded. “Go ahead. I’ll start cooking now. When you find them, tell them to come back for dinner.”
“Okay.”
…
The Flooded Fields
Yang Xue left the cave and headed down the mountain. She didn’t know exactly where the land they bought was, but since all the fields in Niao’er Village were concentrated at the foot of the mountain, she figured she’d find them eventually.
At the foot of the mountain, many villagers were already busy in their fields. Some crops could still be salvaged, and the villagers were desperately trying to save what they could.
Yang Xue walked over to take a look. Good heavens. The rice that hadn’t been washed away was almost entirely buried in mud. A few stalks stood upright, but even they were caked in filth.
Yang Xue shook her head. For peasants who relied on the weather for food, seeing this must feel like the end of the world.
She took a look and began to walk away, but after a few steps, she stopped. Finally, with a heavy sigh, she turned back. As an agriculture student, she found it hard to just stand by and watch. Moreover, based on her experiences lately, she felt that most of the people in this village were kind and reasonable.
If I can help, I might as well help a bit.
There are actually many ways to salvage lodged (fallen) rice, but in this undeveloped era, there was no proper fertilizer or machinery. To save the rice, they had to use primitive methods.
When Yang Xue approached, a woman and her children were digging rice stalks out of the mud. But just digging them out wasn’t enough; the rice remained flat on the ground. Before long, the grains would fall off or even start to sprout.
The best way was to dig them out and then create a support—a stake—to tie the stalks to so they could continue growing upward. Additionally, the water in the paddies had to be drained to let the field dry in the sun. After the heavy rain and floods, the rice would suffocate if it remained submerged. Finally, the mud on the stalks had to be rinsed off with water.
It would be a lot of trouble. But these farmers relied on this grain to survive; no matter how troublesome, it had to be done.
“Auntie, Uncle, doing it like this won’t work,” Yang Xue called out. “The rice is still lying on the ground; the grains will fall or sprout.”
The family in the field looked miserable. “There’s no other way. We just have to do what we can and see how much survives.”
“Auntie, Uncle, I have a way. I’ll tell you, and if you think it makes sense, you can follow it. If you think I’m talking nonsense, just ignore me.”
Yang Xue wanted to help, but she wouldn’t force them if they didn’t believe her.
“Xue, you have a way? What way? Tell us, quick!” Desperate to save their food, they didn’t stop to wonder how a young girl knew how to save rice.
“First, you must drain the water in the field and let the sun dry it out. Once you dig the rice out, set up stakes and tie the stalks to them so they aren’t crawling on the ground. Also, you need to use water to wash the mud off the plants. That way, your rice might still have a chance.”
The family was overjoyed. “Really? If we do that, can the rice live?”
Yang Xue didn’t want to overpromise. “Auntie, Uncle, I’m just giving you some methods to salvage the grain. If you think it makes sense, try it. As for whether it lives, that’s up to fate.”
The couple looked at each other. They felt her method sounded solid, and at this point, they were willing to try anything. They immediately got to work.
Yang Xue didn’t plan on going from house to house. Once this family started following her advice, the other villagers would see it, ask questions, and the word would spread naturally.
…
Finding Her Parents
Yang Xue continued her search for Yang San and Qian Yue’e. She didn’t have to look far; after walking along a ridge for a while, she saw them surrounded by a group of villagers in the distance.
Yang San and Qian Yue’e looked extremely uncomfortable. Yang Xue quickened her pace.
“Dad! Mom!”
Hearing her voice, they looked over like they were seeing a savior and breathed a collective sigh of relief.
They had finished measuring the land with the Village Head, and the Village Head had gone to see the County Magistrate. Just as they were heading home to tell the kids the news, they were intercepted by curious villagers. Everyone was dying to know exactly how much of a reward Yang Xue had received.
