Chapter 55: Also Living in a Cave
After the introductions were finished, Yang Xue asked Yang Shuang and the others to organize the items she had bought, while she led Huang Zhongcai and Huang Zhongqing to their new living quarters.
The villagers who had occupied a smaller cave a few hundred meters away had already moved back to the village. Yang Xue planned to arrange for the siblings to stay there.
Initially, she had thought about letting them stay in the large cave, which would be more comfortable, but there were still villagers’ belongings there that hadn’t been moved yet, and a few people were still guarding the site.
“You won’t mind living in a cave, will you?” Yang Xue asked. Before the siblings could even react, she continued, “Well, even if you do mind, it won’t matter, since my family lives in one too.”
Huang Zhongcai: “…” Huang Zhongqing: “…”
Huang Zhongcai didn’t care where they lived. He and his sister had been wandering for so long; there wasn’t a dilapidated place they hadn’t stayed in. As long as Yang Xue kept his sister fed, he was content.
“We don’t mind. A cave is fine—warm in winter and cool in summer.”
Hearing her brother say this, Huang Zhongqing quickly nodded. “Mhm, the cave is very nice.”
Yang Xue nodded. “As long as you don’t mind.” Though, as for the “warm in winter and cool in summer” part… Well, it was certainly cool in the summer, but she couldn’t guarantee how warm it would become in winter.
Still, by the time winter arrived, her family would surely have a proper house of their own.
“Starting tomorrow, my family will be clearing land for a vegetable garden, so you’ll need to come and help in the fields.”
Huang Zhongcai nodded. “Understood.” Huang Zhongqing nodded as well. “Yes.”
Huang Zhongqing had been very uneasy when she heard her brother had been sold. Now, however, she felt much more at ease. This mistress wasn’t the type to boss them around or shout at them at the slightest provocation.
On the contrary, this mistress was patient. she asked if they minded their living conditions and told them exactly what needed to be done.
Unlike previous employers who would hire them and then ignore them, leaving them confused. If they weren’t given instructions, she and her brother wouldn’t know what to do and could only awkwardly mimic others. Sometimes they couldn’t find a way to help at all and would just stand there waiting for orders, only to receive a barrage of verbal abuse instead.
Sometimes, when her brother was called away, no one would tell her what to do, and then she would be accused of being lazy and beaten.
Now, it seemed that wouldn’t happen. This elder sister and her family seemed very friendly. She resolved to work hard and not let her down. They had finally found someone to take them in; they couldn’t risk being driven away again.
…
They reached the cave. Yang Xue looked inside; the villagers had left it quite clean, so the siblings could move in without much tidying.
“You two will have to cook for yourselves. Can you manage that?”
Huang Zhongqing nodded immediately. “Yes, I know how to cook.”
“Good. This grain is for you. Let me know when you run out.” Yang Xue pointed to the basket Huang Zhongcai was carrying. Inside were the rations she had prepared for them. “Remember, no wasting food.”
The siblings exchanged a look, thinking it was impossible for them to ever waste food.
“Sister, my brother and I would never waste food.”
“Hey!” Yang Xue interjected sharply. “If you use the wrong title again, I’m docking your rations!”
Huang Zhongqing immediately covered her mouth, her face full of terror. “I’m sorry!”
“Alright, just remember: stay in character at all times.”
The girl nodded vigorously.
Yang Xue waved them off. “Fine then, get your place settled. I’m heading back. If there are any problems, just come over and find us.” Yang Xue was anxious to go find her parents, Yang San and Qian Yue’e.
“Understood.”
…
Once Yang Xue left, Huang Zhongcai set down the basket to put the supplies away. When they opened it to look, both of them were stunned. It was high-quality rice and fine white flour.
Good heavens. They had expected coarse grains or husks. They hadn’t expected Yang Xue to be so generous as to give them the best quality staples right away.
Huang Zhongqing swallowed hard. “Brother, we haven’t even started working yet, and she gave us such good food. Sister Yang Xue is such a good person.”
Huang Zhongcai felt the same. They hadn’t even proven their worth yet, and she was treating them so well. Unlike others who would squeeze every ounce of strength out of them and still refuse to let them eat their fill.
This time, he had truly chosen the right person to follow.
He patted his sister’s head. “Mm. Since we’ve eaten her food, we must work hard for her from now on, you hear?”
“I know, Brother. From now on, I’ll do exactly whatever Sister Yang Xue says.”
Huang Zhongcai nodded and pulled out their small, battered pot from their belongings. “You must be hungry. Let’s cook some porridge first.”
“Okay, Brother. I’ll go tidy up.”
…
Yang Xue, hiding behind a large tree not far away, overheard their conversation and left with a satisfied smile.
When she returned to their own cave, Yang Shuang and the others had already organized the purchases.
“Second Sister, did you buy these fruits? They look delicious!” Yang Yu and Yang Tian stared at the bright red apples, their mouths watering.
“Mm, bought them in town. Go ahead and eat; I bought them specifically for you.”
Yang Shuang was looking at the vegetables Yang Xue had brought back. “Xue’er, the vegetables you bought in town look amazing. How did they grow them? People in our village grow vegetables too, but I’ve never seen any that look this good.”
“Oh, I just bought them from an old grandmother on the street.” In reality, they were bok choy from her Space.
This bok choy came from a mistake one of her junior fellow students made when buying seeds back in her past life. Since they had the seeds anyway, they decided to see if they, as top agriculture students, could make ordinary bok choy taste extraordinary. They had planted them in an experimental plot. Without those, Yang Xue really would have had to buy vegetables from the local elders.
Yang Yu and Yang Tian were already crunching on the apples. “Second Sister, what kind of fruit is this? It’s so tasty!”
“They’re apples.”
Apples existed in the Da’an Dynasty, but Yang Yu and Yang Tian had simply never seen them before.
“Apples… even the name sounds beautiful.”
Hearing their innocent words, Yang Xue couldn’t help but smile. “Since they taste good and have a nice name, when our family has money and builds a big house, we’ll plant two trees in the courtyard. That way, we can have delicious apples every year.”
Yang Xue hadn’t been particularly fond of apples before, but the ones from Space really did taste different. As she ate, she didn’t find herself getting bored with the flavor; instead, she could finish an entire one with great relish.
