- Chapter 8 - Sitting on His Lap
“Can you take me with you?”
The man had a high bridge to his nose and deep set eyes, his features were exceptionally striking. At this moment, he tilted his chin slightly. “I know it is very presumptuous of me to ask this, but… could you please let go of my hair first?”
Along the sharp lines of his jaw and the tensed muscles of his neck, droplets of water rolled and trickled down.
He lowered his eyelids, his narrow eyes fixed on Bai Rui, while one corner of his thin lips curled upward: “Have mercy on me, won’t you?”
Despite his humble words, the searching look in his eyes never seemed to vanish. As he gazed at Bai Rui’s features, there was a hint of playful appreciation.
Bai Rui was still clutching the man’s hair. It was hard to say the position wasn’t a bit ambiguous, after all, he was currently sitting on the man’s lap.
Through the thin fabric and amidst the swaying ripples of the water, he could clearly feel the firm muscles of the man’s thighs. The misty vapor of the icy spring had initially caused him to overlook how inappropriate their posture was.
Bai Rui forced a calm expression, looking down as he untangled the ink-black strands of hair wrapped around his wrist, hiding the turbulent emotions churning within him. However, his lightly trembling eyelashes betrayed the intense, suppressed feelings he held.
He had always been a reserved person; even when his internal state was chaotic, he wouldn’t easily let it show. Yet, his futile attempts at concealment were, to the man before him, as transparent as if he wore no disguise at all, as if he were being seen through at a single glance.
Once the hair was freed, Bai Rui tried to stand up, but the large hand on his waist showed no intention of letting go.
An inexplicable spark of anger rose in his heart: “You said taking you with me was a condition.”
“You are in no position to negotiate conditions with me.”
“So, my answer is… no.”
Bai Rui dropped these cold words, causing the tall, handsome man to raise a single eyebrow almost imperceptibly.
“Your Highness, I deeply apologize for my previous rudeness. But I believe that whatever you plan to do, you will need a guard, someone who can protect you.”
“I can do that. Therefore, I have value.”
The man stared intently into Bai Rui’s eyes. For some reason, that sense of observation grew even heavier.
The man before him was bewitchingly beautiful with narrow eyes. More importantly, soaking in the water like this, he resembled a water ghoul, his hair was so long that when it wrapped around Bai Rui’s wrist, it felt icy and smooth, like high-quality silk soaked in water.
Regardless, he looked dangerous.
Bai Rui frowned: “Sir, please let go of your hand.”
In the empty, quiet environment, his voice carried a faint echo across the water, sounding ethereal. The large hand obediently released Bai Rui’s slender waist.
“Call me… Awu.”
The man’s deep, magnetic voice was pleasant to the ear. For no reason at all, Bai Rui felt the spot on his waist where he had been touched, along with the gland on the back of his neck, begin to feel as though it were burning.
Standing up in the water, Bai Rui realized the pool only reached his waist. Why did it feel like he had been submerged so deeply just a moment ago?
Bai Rui remained silent, vainly smoothing his hairline. Having just fallen into the pool, he looked like a drowned rat, strands of hair clung to his cheeks, his lashes were beaded with water, and his body shivered slightly.
Water dripped down his pale cheeks, a sight that made the man in front of him narrow his eyes, though Bai Rui was completely unaware.
Everything here was too strange, a dark magical world where everything felt a bit eerie. Especially now, with the moon high and the wind howling, he had fallen into an icy pool and into someone’s arms.
The crux of the matter was that the man was unrealistically handsome…
After a pause, Bai Rui finally spoke. His trembling lips made his words quiver with a chill he couldn’t shake off: “You should consider how to escape first.”
Bai Rui was referring to the iron chains on the man’s wrists. Awu raised his eyebrows and pulled his arms apart, stretching the chains taut until they rose out of the water, dripping.
The chains were thick, clearly heavy and sturdy. It was unknown what crime Awu had committed to be imprisoned here, bound by chains capable of tethering a thousand pounds.
“Then, Your Highness, if I break these chains, will you take me with you?”
As he spoke, he looked at Bai Rui, tilting his head in contemplation. It was hard to say if the gesture held the flavor of a mischievous spirit or monster.
If this man named Awu could snap the chains by sheer strength, it meant he didn’t need rescuing at all; if he couldn’t, then there was no point in “taking” him, as he couldn’t leave. It was a simple logic puzzle.
Bai Rui had already quietly retreated two steps. “At that point, it will depend on whether you are worth taking along.”
“I will prove to Your Highness my determination to follow you.”
Awu smiled softly. On that bewitching face, the corners of his eyes tilted up slightly, giving his narrow gaze a particularly seductive, captivating power.
Then, he raised his hands.
With a sharp crack, the man’s wrist bones dropped into a distorted, limp state.
Bai Rui’s eyes widened. He watched with his own eyes as Awu snapped his own wrists.
The man frowned, thin beads of sweat appearing at his temples, his jaw muscles bulging. He looked to be in genuine pain.
He was truly ruthless to himself.
Finally, with a heavy sigh, he forcibly pulled his hands through the shackles. He stood up, his hands hanging limply at his sides: “Kind Highness, please take me with you. If you don’t, I might really die here.”
Bai Rui never expected this man to show his resolve in such a way. Now his hands looked crippled; who knew how long he had been soaking in this pool…
The bright moon hung in the sky, casting cold light over the rippling, chilly water.
At his core, Bai Rui was actually a sucker for a pretty face. He sighed and looked down in silence. Seeing him stay quiet in this silent environment, it was interpreted as a silent consent.
The water splashed. Awu stood up. A dazed Bai Rui snapped back to his senses, his eyes following Awu’s face as he tilted his head up.
In that moment, he truly realized the definition of “tall and commanding.”
He estimated the man to be between 1.88 and 1.9 meters tall. He had broad shoulders and a narrow waist, his upper body was lean and muscular with beautiful definition. The water lapped against his narrow hips, where a piece of fabric was loosely draped, revealing clear mermaid lines (V-lines). From the side, his waist looked thin, his proportions impressively perfect.
It was rare for someone so tall to not look unbalanced, he looked like a weeping mermaid under the cold moonlight. His long hair clung to his shoulders and muscular back, and water droplets rolled down his cold, pale skin.
He looked up, his narrow eyes filled with undisguised pleading.
“Your Highness, take me with you. Don’t leave me here in this bone-chilling water.”
The air was filled with a difficult silence.
Standing in the pool, Bai Rui was freezing. The white mist surrounding them wasn’t from warmth, on the contrary, it was because the water was so cold it emitted wisps of frost.
In this castle of dark magic, he didn’t know what other strange things would appear later in the night. He had already seen things with fins darting around under the carpets.
Bai Rui took a deep breath: “I can take you, but we part ways once we are out of the castle.”
After speaking, he realized that looking up at the man didn’t give him much of an aura of authority, so he turned his face away. The tendons on his slender, pale neck stood out, exposing his unsettled state of mind.
“Easily done,” Awu smiled, his gaze resting on Bai Rui’s profile. “Everything shall be as Your Highness commands.”
“Fine, let’s go.”
As he spoke, Bai Rui reached a hand toward Awu. Awu took a few steps forward and looked down at Bai Rui’s face. Suddenly, that sense of pressure returned.
Bai Rui looked down for a moment, then raised his eyes to meet Awu’s narrow gaze.
After a long pause…
Bai Rui’s fair, handsome face and exquisite Eastern features seemed to please Awu. He gave a soft laugh, then leaned down and rested his chin in Bai Rui’s palm.
Like an obedient large dog, he blinked his eyes at Bai Rui.
Bai Rui was startled. In his palm was the man’s chin, that face, handsome enough to be a sin against God, was displayed right before his eyes at point blank range.
“What are you doing?”
Awu: “Has Your Highness forgotten? My hands are broken.”
“Would you please carry me on your back?”
