- Chapter 7 - I’m Very Well-Behaved, Please Take Me With You
The massive castle gates were not far away. Bai Rui, draped in a cloak, glanced up at the sky. The heavens looked like a canvas of cobalt blue, hung with a crescent moon shaped like a hook. Bright moonlight spilled down, coating the courtyard.
Ice Badger Castle was a bit cold. Bai Rui cupped his hands, carefully exhaled a breath of warmth, and crept along the wall of the slave enclosure as cautiously as possible.
For this escape journey, as long as he left the slave detention area, getting out entirely would basically be no problem. He had considered it, though fate had pushed him to this point, he couldn’t actually play the role of “cannonball fodder” at the cost of his own life. If others were unkind to him, there was no need for him to cooperate with a miserable end.
Run first, worry later. He could only take it one step at a time. There was only one certainty: Bai Rui had lived in adversity his whole life and had never given up on himself. In this world of a manga picture book, he had no reason to give up now. Moreover, he firmly believed that one day, he would find a way back to his own world.
“I’ll definitely find a way,” Bai Rui whispered to himself, a faint mist of breath forming in front of his water-red lips.
The stone ground wasn’t carpeted, so he had to slow down and move with extreme care. Because the Black Dragon had mentioned during the day that Ice Badger Castle was crawling with hidden guards, it meant he had to be extra cautious to escape safely.
Bai Rui now deeply regretted drawing Ice Badger Castle so large. Most importantly, he had only drawn the exterior facade, the interior layout and details had apparently been automatically filled in by the world the moment he transmigrated into it.
Avoiding the last wave of sentries near the cages, Bai Rui crossed over as carefully as he could. On the quiet, empty outskirts of the enclosure, there was an icy, frozen spring. The tinkling sound of the water echoed in the deserted environment, sounding even more ethereal.
Based on his impressions and details from his drawings, Ice Badger Castle had no moat, only a suspended long bridge connecting the castle to the outside. In other words, as long as he escaped from there, he would be free. And the mandatory path to reach that bridge was through the water prison.
Bai Rui lifted his foot and took a step forward.
Suddenly, an ice-blue barrier appeared on the suspended bridge. The tip of his foot just barely brushed against it. The world went silent for a split second before the barrier flared with light, illuminating the castle’s facade.
“Who goes there?!”
A howl went up, like an alarm being triggered, echoing through the empty courtyard with heart-pounding intensity.
“There’s an intruder!” “Quick, go see what’s happening!”
Armored soldiers began running from the distance. Tramp, tramp, tramp, the footsteps were dense. The members of the Witch-Demon race were naturally tall with large strides, they reached the front of the courtyard in just a few steps. The soldiers, looking fierce and malicious, held spears that glinted sharply under the moonlight.
Bai Rui stood there, his eyes wide with shock. There was actually a light curtain alarm?! Even worse, he had been discovered!
Bai Rui took two steps back, lost his footing, and his center of gravity shifted. Amidst endless terror, he fell into a pool of icy water.
With a loud splash, water sprayed everywhere.
Bai Rui felt like he underwent a long process of sinking to the bottom. It was only when his spine hit the hard stones at the bottom of the pool that the sharp pain brought him back to consciousness. Glub, glub. His arms and legs flailed in the water, creating a chaotic swirl of rising bubbles.
His heart was nearly leaping out of his throat. He struggled and splashed in the water, a single thought in his mind: It’s over. This time, I’m truly finished. I can’t swim.
Was he, Bai Rui, going to be the first artist to die inside his own drawing?
The will to live made his hands claw for anything, desperate to breathe, but more water flooded into his windpipe. The freezing water stimulated his nerves, letting Bai Rui experience the kind of terror before death that most people never know.
After the terror came a sense of tranquility. Water seemed to have entered his ears, creating a gurgling bubble sound. Everything went silent. It felt as if the entire world had turned into chaos, squeezed by the current. It felt like returning to the womb, making him instinctively want to curl up his body and slowly sink into the depths…
Right at that moment, in the shadows, a large hand suddenly reached out and covered his mouth, while another large hand gripped his waist.
In the next second, he was pulled into a tall figure’s embrace and broke through the surface of the water. Ripples washed away, echoing around the tall body and Bai Rui.
Bai Rui gasped for air, his lungs making a whistling sound. After being hoisted up, he was quickly dragged by the person toward the edge of the pool, hiding their figures in the darkness.
Seemingly afraid that Bai Rui would cry out in shock, that cold, white-skinned hand remained over Bai Rui’s face. Bai Rui’s face was small, the large hand was pale with well-defined knuckles, covering everything below his nose and making his pale cheeks look even smaller. The palm was huge, dripping with water.
One hand could cover most of Bai Rui’s face. Pinching his white cheeks was like pinching dough; the pale fingers tightened slightly, and the pressure was already painful for him…
Bai Rui’s brow furrowed, his eyes reddening. He leaned forward and bumped his shoulder against the chest of the person behind him, struggling to stand up in that tall embrace, but it was futile. Although he hadn’t seen the person face to face, the difference in body size was glaringly obvious.
“Who… who are you?”
Bai Rui’s struggles were almost negligible within that tall, sturdy embrace. Since his face couldn’t move, he could only subconsciously roll his eyes. His line of sight caught a strand of silver hair drifting past, carrying a faint scent of a bath. Due to the angle, he couldn’t see clearly, only the hazy projection of the person’s tall silhouette on the water’s surface.
The ripples on the water were a mess, distorting the reflection and adding a touch of eeriness.
“Shh”
The man behind him spoke. His voice was deep, brushing against his ear with a hint of flirtatiousness. “Don’t move. Aren’t you afraid of being discovered?”
The voice was low and magnetic, with a teasing lilt, yet it felt thin-blooded and indifferent, like a high-end executioner toyed with his prey.
Bai Rui gradually stopped struggling, though his chest still heaved violently. His mouth was still covered. He watched helplessly as groups of guards ran past, failing to notice them in the mist-shrouded pool.
The chaos didn’t last long, and the surroundings went quiet again. The sound of receding footsteps was exceptionally clear in the empty environment.
Faint red marks from being squeezed had appeared on Bai Rui’s pale cheeks. His naturally water red lips had been pushed into a pout by the large hand, his lips lightly brushing against the cold skin of the man’s thumb.
He could only suppress the urge to bite down and ask, “Can you let go of me now?”
After a long moment, the powerful hand finally loosened its grip. The pad of a finger lightly scraped over Bai Rui’s lips before releasing its hold.
Bai Rui almost fell out of the man’s embrace, his ears flushing red. He felt as if he, a grown man, had been molested, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on how. It felt like the gland at the back of his neck suddenly twitched. It… felt rather comfortable.
The moment he turned around, the silver-white long hair floating in the water behind the man turned black, just like his own. The two finger wide lace over the man’s eyes seemed to burn away like embers, glowing red before vanishing instantly, revealing a pair of long, narrow, deep set eyes.
As Bai Rui turned, what entered his vision was a tall, sturdy physique. Even sitting in the water, the man had broad shoulders and a fit, elegant build. His jawline was sharp and cold, his features profound and handsome with a high nose and thin lips. One side of his mouth curled slightly, and water droplets clung to his pale face.
In those deep eyes, there was a sense of inquiry and observation. To put it bluntly, he didn’t look like he was looking at a person, but rather observing some small animal, gazing deeply and carefully, creating a sense of pressure that felt like being pinned down by a stare.
It was also at this moment that Bai Rui realized the posture between him and this man was a bit excessive.
The man was sitting in the water, his long hair floating in the frost-chilled spring. Because of the cold or perhaps a sudden survival instinct. Bai Rui had grabbed the man’s long hair while turning around. The hair, like water soaked silk, had wound around his wrists.
He hadn’t realized it before, but now he did: he was sitting on the man’s lap. In the process of turning around, the posture had become even more indescribable.
“You…” Bai Rui swallowed hard. “Who are you?”
The man’s gaze seemed to wander over Bai Rui’s white neck, pausing briefly on his Adam’s apple as he swallowed.
“Me?”
The man lifted both hands out of the water. Only then could the two iron chains pulling at his left and right be seen.
“I am a poor soul kidnapped in this ice pool by the evil Witch Emperor. Brave Prince, could you take me with you as you escape?”
Bai Rui wanted to ask why he called him “Prince,” but the words died in his throat. When he arrived three days ago, the wedding procession had been massive, said to be a “special arrangement.” Who wouldn’t know about it when it was so high-profile? To be honest, that grand parade was no different from a public humiliation. At that time, he had even seen people in the welcoming crowds along the road who weren’t just human, there were bull heads, sheep heads, pig heads, and creatures that defied description…
Bai Rui looked back at the empty courtyard, then lowered his gaze. “I can’t help you.”
Given the current turn of events, he wasn’t even sure if he could escape himself.
A faint, sweet scent drifted from the back of Bai Rui’s neck with the night breeze. It smelled lovely, subtle yet present.
The tall man’s lips curled. “I have a way to help the Prince escape.”
“The condition is, the Prince takes me along.”
