- Chapter 9 - What a Good Child, So Attentive to Comfort
Lan Shan Jun stared blankly at the visibly taller Cang Wu before her. Had she been lying here for so long? The young girl was nearly as tall as her now.
“Senior Sister?” Cang Wu waved her hand in front of Lan Shan Jun’s eyes.
Lan Shan Jun snapped back to attention and muttered, “How many years has it been?”
Cang Wu: “Hmm?”
Lan Shan Jun explained, “How many years have I been lying here?”
Cang Wu blinked: “It’s only been a little over a month, Senior Sister.”
Lan Shan Jun: “……”
Her gaze swept over Cang Wu from top to bottom, thinking: Even if you are the Villain of the original book, your constitution can’t be this special. Whose child grows like a rocket in a single month?
Perhaps her stare was too intense, as Cang Wu seemed to understand Lan Shan Jun’s confusion and spoke to explain: “I broke through my realm while Senior Sister was recuperating, so I grew a little taller.”
Lan Shan Jun heard the sound of her own heart shattering. Although she couldn’t compare to the overachieving protagonist Xie Qing Shuang, she hadn’t been lazy these years. Even when she couldn’t wield a sword or knife, she was constantly practicing her control over wind and water. To cultivate to the Life and Death Realm in over a hundred years was considered high talent in the Four Seas. Yet, in front of the Villain, it was completely inadequate. Also, she had never heard of breaking through a realm making someone grow taller!
“Book Spirit, did you get it wrong? Is Cang Wu the protagonist?”
Book Spirit: “This is a cultivation world. What’s so strange about it? If Cang Wu didn’t have some talent, how could she have slaughtered her way across the Four Seas later on?”
That was true. Lan Shan Jun gradually accepted this explanation.
“Senior Sister, while you were recovering, the Valley Master asked me to pass on a message: once you woke up, go to the Ascension Platform to bring Xie Qing Shuang back.”
Lan Shan Jun’s body stiffened. She looked at Cang Wu in disbelief. “Go where? Bring back who?”
Cang Wu was puzzled and repeated, “Go to the Ascension Platform to bring back Xie Qing Shuang.”
Lan Shan Jun frowned. Why would Xie Qing Shuang be at the Ascension Platform? The Valley Master sent her to bring her back. Could it be that the Valley Master punished her?
“When did Senior Sister Xie go?” Lan Shan Jun anxiously grabbed Cang Wu’s wrist and rushed away using wind-riding, clearly forgetting that Cang Wu was now at the same realm and could fly on her own sword.
The wind brushed past her face, carrying the clear fragrance of the Three-Heart Pure Lotus.
“Dong Jun brought us out of the Fog Forest, and she was kneeling in front of the Fog Forest then. Not long after, the Valley Master ordered her to go to the Ascension Platform. She can only return after Senior Sister’s injury has healed and you go to pick her up.” Cang Wu looked at Lan Shan Jun. The woman’s thin inner clothes clung tightly to her body against the wind, her figure clearly visible. Cang Wu lowered her gaze to avoid staring, pursed her lips, and reminded her, “Senior Sister, perhaps you should change your clothes before going.”
Lan Shan Jun looked down. Indeed, going out like this was a bit undignified and unsightly. Remembering that she seemed to have some low-grade ritual robes left in her jade plaque, Lan Shan Jun had a thought. A set of teal-colored ritual robes was properly put on. The teal and white combination better highlighted Lan Shan Jun’s gentle and amiable demeanor. Her long hair was tied behind her head with a matching ribbon. Stray locks of hair intentionally or unintentionally fell into Cang Wu’s collar, cool and slightly itchy, carrying a familiar clean fragrance.
“Why did the Valley Master punish her?”
Cang Wu’s gaze shifted, settling on the side of the woman’s face ahead. “I heard from others that it was because she failed to protect Senior Sister.”
Lan Shan Jun was full of question marks. No matter what, this can’t be blamed on Xie Qing Shuang, can it? The Valley Master isn’t an unreasonable person, is he?
The Ascension Platform was not within Yanggu’s territory, but a heaven-reaching path connected it to the deep sea. A thousand years ago, a mighty cultivator ascended to immortality from Yanggu’s eastern border, stepping on the first ray of sunlight over the Four Seas that day. The area where she ascended gathered seawater into a ten-mile wide vortex, which was named the Ascension Platform. For a thousand years after, cultivators flocked to the Ascension Platform in the Eastern Sea to enter the Divine Ruins, comprehend the spiritual intent left by the previous ascending Immortal, and hopefully ascend themselves at the Platform. Over the millennia, few, if any, have found the Divine Ruins, let alone comprehended the spiritual intent. Once a person went up and could not return, there was only one outcome: being swept into the vortex and buried in the Eastern Sea.
For the Yanggu disciples, the Ascension Platform was where disciples who made grave mistakes were punished. The Valley Master’s original intention when setting this rule was not purely for punishment, but also to set the erring disciples on the right path and rectify their minds. Since Lan Shan Jun entered the Valley, she had never seen anyone receive such a severe punishment. Xie Qing Shuang was the first.
Approaching the Ascension Platform, the surrounding moisture abruptly intensified, and the wind became sharp, like thin blades encircling the Platform, seemingly ready to sweep everything approaching into it and utterly crush it. Lan Shan Jun narrowed her eyes, stepping onto the heaven-reaching path, moving toward the Ascension Platform step by step.
“Senior Sister……” Cang Wu began to speak, but then saw the fierce wind swirling around Lan Shan Jun suddenly dissipate, becoming soft and obedient, clinging to the hem of her robes. There was no sign of resistance; instead, the wind bowed low and escorted her forward.
“……So impressive.” Cang Wu followed behind Lan Shan Jun, personally witnessing the turbulent Ascension Platform slowly calm down.
Lan Shan Jun walked proudly and calmly.
In reality, she was ecstatic internally: “Hahahaha, Valley Master, you really have good taste!!! You should have let me come to pick her up. What ‘Ascension Platform‘? This is like walking around my own home, effortlessly.”
After the wind ceased, the Ascension Platform looked no different from the usual sea surface, only calmer and no longer surging. One could even walk on it, like a vast blue mirror. Ripples spread across the mirror surface with each step she took, gradually reaching the meditating Xie Qing Shuang not far away, only to be shaken back by the spiritual energy around her. After spending over a month in this perilous vortex, Xie Qing Shuang showed no signs of distress, though a layer of dark circles under her eyes added a touch of fatigue to her complexion.
The subtle changes alerted Xie Qing Shuang. She suddenly opened her eyes, and a chilling intent spread out. Frost instantly expanded from beneath her, transforming the entire Ascension Platform into a world of flying frost and snow in a single breath. Soul Illumination Realm Great Perfection. Xie Qing Shuang was on the verge of breaking through.
Lan Shan Jun took a deep breath and smiled. Why is everyone breaking through so quickly?
“Senior Sister Xie, congratulations. You’re about to break through your realm.” Lan Shan Jun walked forward.
Seeing it was Lan Shan Jun, the coldness in Xie Qing Shuang’s eyes subsided, and a complex look flashed across her face. She stood up and retracted her emitted spiritual energy. Just as she was about to speak, her eyes darted to the person behind Lan Shan Jun. Frost and snow surged again, sweeping in with a biting aura.
Cang Wu tilted her head, glancing at the frost and snow around them that concealed a sharp edge, a hint of mocking laughter playing on her lips. She looked down slightly, seeing the half-drawn sword blade in the woman’s hand. The air fell silent. After a long pause—
“Lan Shan, I’m sorry about what happened that day.” Xie Qing Shuang apologized sincerely.
Lan Shan Jun clicked her tongue, dissatisfied. “I was injured because my own strength was lacking. What does that have to do with Senior Sister Xie? The Valley Master is truly… how could he pin it on you?”
Xie Qing Shuang only gave a slight smile, then said calmly, “Let’s go back.” As she brushed past Cang Wu, Xie Qing Shuang’s expression darkened. As they left the Ascension Platform, the vortex surged instantly, as if the calm just moments ago had never existed.
The three headed toward Yanggu. Lan Shan Jun rode the wind in the middle, with Xie Qing Shuang and Cang Wu flying on their swords on either side of her. The atmosphere seemed frozen. Lan Shan Jun sensed something was amiss and asked the Book Spirit: “Why aren’t they saying anything?”
Book Spirit: “Isn’t this exactly what you want? This way, Cang Wu won’t develop resentment because the two female leads are close, directly avoiding the Villain’s plot line. Won’t it be easier for you to bring the protagonists together?”
“Oh, right!” Lan Shan Jun’s feeling of awkwardness in the middle vanished completely. She was very satisfied with the current state of Cang Wu and Xie Qing Shuang’s relationship.
Back at Yanggu, Xie Qing Shuang had to report back to the Valley Master, and Lan Shan Jun and Cang Wu had to return to Cloud-Treading Residence. The three parted ways.
After walking some distance, Xie Qing Shuang narrowed her eyes and looked back. At that moment, Cang Wu, who was flying upward on her sword, seemed to sense it and looked down. Their eyes met in mid-air. Four eyes locked, and the same sharpness was visible in their depths.
Xie Qing Shuang arrived at Xie You’s small courtyard. In front of the house in the courtyard were two patches of barren soil, where a few sparse, withered, nearly-dead spiritual herbs could faintly be seen.
“Master.”
“Come in.” Xie You’s voice was somewhat cold.
Xie Qing Shuang lowered her eyelids, placed her sword outside the courtyard, and walked in. Xie You was reading a medical book, holding a silver needle. Beside her lay the Jiao Demon with the broken tail. Most of the Jiao Demon’s wounds had healed, and Xie You had thoughtfully dressed her in clothes. The Jiao Demon saw Xie Qing Shuang, her eyes filled with tears, and begged for help.
Xie Qing Shuang ignored her, approached Xie You, and spoke before Xie You could ask—this was the only time she showed disrespect to Xie You. “Master, I have found the Divine Ruins.”
Xie You watched this child grow up and naturally knew her temperament. This sentence was not a report on her gains at the Ascension Platform this past month but an evasion—an attempt to avoid the question Xie You was about to ask.
“Qing Shuang, do you know what the hardest part of the Soul Illumination Realm is?” Xie You did not directly address her statement.
Xie Qing Shuang lowered her gaze. “Slaying Demons.” Slaying all inner demons before entering the Grand Void.
“Master, rest assured. Your disciple already knows her inner demon and will surely achieve the Slaying!”
Xie You’s expression softened, and she looked at Xie Qing Shuang gently. “Do not disappoint your Master.”
“Come, help me hold her down.” Xie You pointed to the Jiao Demon beside her. The Jiao Demon’s eyes instantly widened, but her mouth was sealed, preventing her from crying out.
Xie Qing Shuang reached out and held down the Jiao Demon’s powerful, squirming tail, asking in confusion, “Master, what do you need this Jiao Demon for?”
Xie You held the silver needle, comparing it against the medical book, seemingly looking for an acupuncture point. “Lan Shan is going through an inexplicable estrus, isn’t she? I’ll test it on the Jiao Demon first. Once I find the problem, I’ll treat Lan Shan.” As she spoke, the silver needle was inserted without hesitation. The Jiao Demon’s eyes flew open, and her tail straightened.
Xie Qing Shuang: “…” Thank goodness she’s not treating Lan Shan directly.
Lan Shan Jun, who had just returned to Cloud-Treading Residence, sneezed without warning. She rubbed her arms, thinking she might have been chilled by Senior Sister Xie’s spiritual energy at the Ascension Platform. While she pondered, the surrounding temperature rapidly increased. The coldness was completely dispelled. Light blue spiritual energy continuously flowed toward Lan Shan Jun. Lan Shan Jun turned her head and saw Cang Wu using spiritual energy to warm the air around her.
Lan Shan Jun: “…” So wasteful, such a prodigal. In addition to feeling pain for the spiritual energy being wasted, Lan Shan Jun felt a little touched. What a good child, so attentive to comfort.
Cang Wu smiled at her.
“Alright, alright, stop it. What if Master sees?” Lan Shan Jun pressed down on Cang Wu’s hand.
Cang Wu pouted. “So what if she sees?”
Lan Shan Jun noticed her casual and informal attitude toward Dong Jun and thought: This won’t do. I need to teach her respect for elders and care for the young. Just then, Dong Jun returned and saw the two standing at the main entrance. “Playing door gods?”
Lan Shan Jun’s eyes lit up. An opportunity for teaching by example had arrived. She coughed, patted Cang Wu’s shoulder, and then raised her hand and bowed respectfully. “Master.”
Cang Wu: “…”
Dong Jun immediately understood Lan Shan Jun’s intent. She turned sideways to face Cang Wu, ready to receive her bow.
Cang Wu saw all this.
Seeing that Cang Wu hadn’t bowed yet, Lan Shan Jun reached out and hooked Cang Wu’s finger. “Junior Sister.”
Cang Wu’s fingers felt an electric shock. As if controlled by a ghost, she imitated Lan Shan Jun’s movement and bowed. “Master.”
“Mhm.” Dong Jun’s response was drawn out, causing Cang Wu to secretly grit her teeth.
After the two straightened up, Dong Jun spoke softly, “The Vermillion Bird Feast is next month. You will come with me.”
The Vermillion Bird Feast! Lan Shan Jun’s eyes sparkled. It was finally here—the other female protagonist mentioned in the original text!
