- Chapter 10 - Your Name is, Endless
Early in the morning, Lan Shan Jun was still sound asleep when a sudden burst of spiritual energy hit her face. Before Lan Shan Jun could open her eyes, a basin of cold water drenched her from head to toe, chilling her to the bone. Her sleep-mussed hair was soaked, sticking to her face in wet strands. Lan Shan Jun froze for two seconds, looking around confusedly. The next instant, the ground beneath her vanished, and Lan Shan Jun fell straight down. Directly below, a gigantic, monstrously patterned snake had its mouth wide open, waiting for her to fall in.
Her sleepiness vanished instantly. Lan Shan Jun rode the wind and swung away, but she still ended up face-to-face with the big patterned snake. Its cold, vertical pupils gave Lan Shan Jun goosebumps.
“Master!! What are you doing!?” She didn’t need to guess who was responsible. Last night she was curled up in her cozy bed, and now, opening her eyes, she was standing in a primeval forest. Is this reasonable?
Lan Shan Jun struggled to escape on the wind. The big patterned snake behind her followed as if on a hot wheel, sticking tightly to her.
“The Vermillion Bird Feast is a mixed bag of people and creatures. Your Master is afraid you’ll be bullied, so I thought of a way to help you train.” The leisurely voice of Dong Jun came from overhead. Lan Shan Jun could even imagine the posture and expression with which Dong Jun was watching her being chased right now. “Lan Shan, constantly running away won’t do.”
Before the last syllable fell, the clear wind instantly stopped. Lan Shan Jun splashed into the water with a plop. The large patterned snake followed, instantly coiling around her. The patterned snake was not playing; the moment it wrapped around her, it began to tighten its body circle by circle. It excitedly flicked its tongue, watching the person it had bound turn purple and struggle to breathe.
“You! You’re serious!?” Lan Shan Jun managed to squeeze out a sentence.
The snake’s body coiled around Lan Shan Jun’s head until she was entirely wrapped up. In a momentary gap in the snake’s movement, an eye, bloodshot from the pressure, was exposed. The snake’s coils tightened further, and her eyes were completely covered—
“Bang—!” A loud explosion erupted. Every droplet of splashing water contained blood.
The person who had been wrapped was now standing on the water surface in the pose of a victor. She moved her fingers, and the chain blade sprang into action, fiercely whipping the large patterned snake, which was now tangled into a ball by the chain, out of the water. Lan Shan Jun controlled the water surface. When the big patterned snake struck it, it was like hitting solid ground. Its two sharp fangs broke into two pieces, finally flying to Lan Shan Jun’s feet.
Lan Shan Jun’s hand holding the chain blade trembled—not from anger, not from fear, but from disgust. She hated snakes, especially those with such patterns.
“It seems this weapon suits you well.” Dong Jun’s voice was still airy.
Lan Shan Jun took a deep breath. After proving her victory, she quickly submerged the big patterned snake underwater. “Then, can I…”
“Have a competition with your Junior Sister.”
Lan Shan Jun pursed her lips, looking at Cang Wu, who had suddenly been pulled into the space. The original body’s ending was being killed by the Villain. Now, being asked to spar with Cang Wu gave her a subtle feeling.
“Give it a try. If Cang Wu truly becomes the Villain later, you’ll have to face her eventually,” the Book Spirit also watched the excitement, chuckling. “While the Villain hasn’t fully matured, knead her, flatten her, and thoroughly abuse her.”
“You think she’s dough?” Lan Shan Jun retorted testily. “It’s debatable whether I can even win.”
Book Spirit disagreed: “Although you are both at the Life and Death Realm now, the advantage is with you!”
It was true. This world created by Dong Jun was constantly shifting, and it was currently a sea area, which was an absolute advantage for Lan Shan Jun, who had the innate Water Spiritual Root.
Is this favoritism? Or did Dong Jun think she would definitely lose to Cang Wu, so she created this advantageous environment for her?
The two stood quietly on the water surface, neither moving. Dong Jun’s voice came from the void again: “Lan Shan, you are the Senior Sister. The competition should stop before serious harm.”
Lan Shan Jun: “……” Shouldn’t she be saying that to her?
Lan Shan Jun took a deep breath and nodded to Cang Wu opposite her. “Junior Sister.”
Cang Wu copied her, smiling faintly. “Senior Sister, please instruct me.” The Crane’s Bite was drawn, and Cang Wu’s expression was serious.
Lan Shan Jun flicked her wrist. The chain blade was pulled from the water, extending hundreds of meters in an instant, coiling and trapping the surroundings. The two short blades followed their master’s consciousness and flew toward the sword cultivator on the water surface.
The water surface around Cang Wu exploded. She raised her hand to block one short blade. When the other attacked from behind, she used the force to leap up, stepping on the flying short blade to rise into the air. Lan Shan Jun narrowed her eyes. The water splashes created by Cang Wu’s movements just now were like thousands of silver needles, densely forming a white curtain.
“Go.” With Lan Shan Jun’s whisper, the silver needles moved in unison. The short blade that Cang Wu dodged was also among them. They were hidden among the silver needles, flashing with a cold blue light, like the eyes of some beast. As the silver needles slowly gathered and took shape, a colossal, silver-white Peregrine Falcon appeared in mid-air, spreading its wings and swooping toward Cang Wu.
The Falcon’s skeleton was composed entirely of the chain blade in Lan Shan Jun’s hand. The chain blade’s rank was higher than the Crane’s Bite in Cang Wu’s hand, and both were at the Life and Death Realm. Generally speaking, Cang Wu couldn’t cleave this Falcon.
But that was only generally speaking, as Cang Wu was no ordinary person. Lan Shan Jun clenched the chain blade in her hand, her eyes reflecting the scene of the Falcon and the person in mid-air clashing. The Falcon was not cleaved, nor was Cang Wu struck down. Countless vines grew wildly from under the water. The thickest and strongest ones shot straight into the sky, firmly trapping the Falcon’s wings just as it was about to embrace Cang Wu!
Wood Spiritual Root! Cang Wu actually had a Wood Spiritual Root!?
The next second, a flash of fire crossed Lan Shan Jun’s eyes. The vines trapping the Falcon ignited spontaneously, instantly evaporating all the water droplets that formed its feathers. Only a skeleton remained in place.
Lan Shan Jun: “……” Dual Spiritual Root?
Lan Shan Jun couldn’t help but look up and smile at this world. Is being a Villain so great? Does being a Villain mean special privileges? Why is her cultivation speed so fast with a Dual Spiritual Root!? This world has a bug!
Seeing Lan Shan Jun frozen for a long time, Cang Wu sheathed her sword and tried to descend to check on her. The moment her foot touched the water surface, a powerful suction directly pulled her into the water.
Underwater, just as Cang Wu stabilized her breath, Lan Shan Jun’s chain blade pursued her, extending infinitely underwater, growing madly like aquatic grass. Lan Shan Jun composed herself. She knew well that she was not suited for close combat. She could only control the chain blade and the surrounding water to push Cang Wu as far away as possible. She pulled Cang Wu underwater to restrain her Fire Spiritual Root ability. Although water nourishes wood, strong water can also drain wood.
Lan Shan Jun remembered the spiritual root settings of this world: even if a Dual Spiritual Root was strong, the combined attributes couldn’t surpass an innate Single Spiritual Root. Therefore, at the same realm, Lan Shan Jun’s water should be superior to Cang Wu’s wood. If it wasn’t, this world could just be destroyed.
Lan Shan Jun watched the surrounding vines with cold eyes, from their initial vigorous life to their gradual wilting, finally dissolving completely. The chain blade easily looped around Cang Wu’s hands. The half-drawn Crane’s Bite was pushed back into its sheath.
Lan Shan Jun’s lips curved up, a huge sigh of relief escaping her heart. She controlled the chain blade to bring the bound Cang Wu to her.
“Say, ‘Senior Sister’,” Lan Shan Jun reached out and pinched Cang Wu’s cheek.
Cang Wu did not care about the outcome of this competition at all. Her gaze closely followed Lan Shan Jun. She obediently called out, “Senior Sister.”
Back on the water surface, the water on Lan Shan Jun and Cang Wu instantly dissipated into cold mist. This world was created by Dong Jun. The mountains, grass, and trees within it were all formed by her spiritual energy, naturally changing according to her will.
“Master, I won.”
Dong Jun’s ambiguous laugh came from the void. The surrounding objects began to twist and change. Space ripped open. Lan Shan Jun blinked and was back in her room.
Lying on her back on the bed, Lan Shan Jun played with her chain blade. The delicate chains coiled together into a small ball, rolling back and forth on her fingertip.
“Your name is, Endless.” Infinite changes, without end.
Lotus Pavilion—
Dong Jun’s fingertip lightly tapped the Crane’s Bite on the table. The sword hummed repeatedly, protesting its dissatisfaction and resentment. “Why didn’t you use your sword just now? Were you letting her win?”
Cang Wu pursed her lips and offered no explanation. Dong Jun glanced at her, knowing that her bloodline-inherent stubbornness had flared up again, exactly like a certain someone.
“How about this: you spar with me. I know you both have pride, this one refuses to concede to that one. You can be proud, but you must have the strength to back it up.” Dong Jun waved her hand, pulling Cang Wu into a void space. There was nothing—no advantages or disadvantages.
Cang Wu held the Crane’s Bite, frowned when she saw Dong Jun standing with her hands behind her back. “Where is your sword?” She knew Dong Jun was the best sword artist in the Four Seas, the top sword cultivator.
“I don’t need it to deal with you,” Dong Jun’s tone was calm. “If your sword or you manage to touch me within a hundred moves,” Dong Jun’s mouth curved into a slight smile, as if mocking the impossibility of the situation, “you are my Master.”
The desire to win was successfully provoked in Cang Wu’s heart. She drew the Crane’s Bite, and a flash of cyan crossed the depths of her eyes. “You said it!”
Cang Wu’s figure was so fast it was only a blur. In less than a breath, she was in front of Dong Jun. The tip of her sword was only an inch from Dong Jun’s chest. The person was still in front of her, yet Cang Wu received a palm strike on her back. She stumbled through the phantom image before her and fell to the ground, immediately feeling her blood surge, a sweet metallic taste rising in her throat.
Dong Jun stood calmly in mid-air. “Do you want to continue?”
Just one move revealed the vast difference between them. Cang Wu gritted her teeth, standing up stubbornly. She lunged, move after move, only to be thrown back, blow after blow. In the blink of an eye, a hundred moves had passed. Dong Jun remained graceful in white, like an Immortal. Cang Wu, however, was disheveled, her face bruised and swollen.
“Don’t think I’m bullying you with my high realm. In this current world, I have suppressed my realm to the Life and Death Realm. Your sword moves are full of openings, giving me a chance to retaliate.” Dong Jun walked up to Cang Wu, bent slightly, and said softly, “Your bloodline is not the capital for your pride; strength is. I’ve beaten more than one Azure Dragon.”
Cang Wu slowly loosened her grip on the sword.
In the middle of the night, Lan Shan Jun was about to undress and go to sleep when she suddenly heard a low sob, like someone who had suffered a grievance and been beaten as a child, trying hard to hold back tears for fear of being discovered.
“Did you hear that?” Lan Shan Jun asked the Book Spirit.
Book Spirit made a sound of confirmation, unsure. “It sounds like it.” After all, there was only that one sound.
Lan Shan Jun felt a flicker of doubt and opened the door. A small black shadow was huddled by the door. The sudden opening of the door froze her for a moment.
“Cang Wu?” Lan Shan Jun called out uncertainly.
The black shadow slowly moved sideways, fleeing quickly in the blink of an eye before Lan Shan Jun could fully register it.
Lan Shan Jun: “……”
