Three Sentences That Made My Ex-Wife Spit Blood - Chapter 24
When Wen Huaxi noticed that a firm force had suddenly pressed out in front of her abdomen, preventing her from hitting the seat, she was momentarily stunned. It was Yan Qinglan who had reached out just in time.
At the moment of the sudden brake, she had been nervous.
But since her upper body had already been leaning forward, it was unlikely she would have hit the baby directly.
Still, why did Yan Qinglan act like she knew she was pregnant?
Wen Huaxi steadied herself and looked at Yan Qinglan with suspicion.
Yan Qinglan simply opened the dashboard and looked ahead.
There had been a traffic accident. The driver responsible had already fled. Thankfully, their own driver had excellent reflexes. Otherwise, they might have crashed as well.
“Master, I am terribly sorry. I didn’t mean to…” The driver looked ahead, sweating with anxiety.
It was fortunate that Wen Huaxi had not eaten or drunk anything strange before getting into the car. She had remained completely clear-headed. Otherwise, there could have been serious consequences today.
Yan Qinglan lifted her hand, signaling the driver to stop talking.
“Qing-jie, something feels off,” Wen Huaxi said, shifting her attention away from Yan Qinglan’s strange earlier movement.
“Yes,” Yan Qinglan responded as she pulled out a device resembling a walkie-talkie and pressed a few buttons.
Looking at the tire marks on the road, it was clear that the vehicle had been coming directly at them.
Was someone targeting the Yan family?
Or perhaps it was Gu Lian?
As that name crossed her mind, Yan Qinglan’s eyes darkened.
No matter who was behind it, she had to investigate this incident thoroughly.
After giving a few instructions, the two women changed cars and headed home.
Once in the new vehicle, Wen Huaxi finally let out a breath and allowed herself to think about Yan Qinglan’s strange move from earlier.
However, Yan Qinglan had moved so naturally and calmly that it looked like she had simply reached out to help her. It just happened to shield her abdomen at the right moment.
Wen Huaxi could not come up with any other explanation. Surely Yan Qinglan did not have some kind of X-ray vision that let her see the baby, right?
She did not think Yan Qinglan was the type to be very forgiving. If she found out Wen Huaxi had broken the rules and gotten pregnant, she would definitely ask questions.
She might even force her to get rid of the child.
That was absolutely unacceptable. Wen Huaxi’s legs were already itching to run.
She had to protect this baby at all costs.
“Xiaoxi.” As soon as they walked through the door and Wen Huaxi tried to head straight to her room, Yan Qinglan reached out and stopped her.
“I am just going to my room. You don’t have to be like this, Qing-jie,” Wen Huaxi said, pretending to be innocent.
She gave a sweet smile, but it did not soften Yan Qinglan’s expression at all.
Yan Qinglan’s face remained calm, showing no clear emotion.
But Wen Huaxi could sense that she was not in a good mood. Her heart tightened with anxiety.
She was truly afraid of Yan Qinglan.
“Jie only wanted to ask if you wanted to take a look at the footage from earlier,” Yan Qinglan said with a sigh.
Wen Huaxi always wanted to escape. Always wanted to leave her.
This thought brought a sudden sense of fear to Yan Qinglan, as if Wen Huaxi had truly abandoned her before.
Was it the divorce in her memory?
That shouldn’t be it. In her memory, she had been reluctant to sign the papers. They probably never went through with it.
“Then I will watch it with you,” Wen Huaxi agreed obediently and returned to sit close to Yan Qinglan.
Perhaps to make up for the earlier trouble, the auction house had acted quickly.
Even though they had been delayed on the road, the items they purchased had already been delivered before they got home.
Wen Huaxi examined the raw jade stone she had bought and ran her hands over it curiously.
Her clumsy and untrained movements made Yan Qinglan frown slightly. She reached out and guided Wen Huaxi’s hands.
“Xiaoxi, you won’t be able to tell what’s inside by touching it like this. It’s not like you are feeling for fetal movement.”
Yan Qinglan paused for a brief moment. She realized that she had been so affected by Wen Huaxi’s pregnancy that even looking at jade reminded her of it.
She glanced at Wen Huaxi’s lower abdomen.
It had only been a little over a month. It was still far too early to feel any movement.
“I know, I know. I was just getting a feel for it,” Wen Huaxi said, quickly pulling her hand back. Yan Qinglan’s touch gave her chills.
“What do you plan to do with it?” Yan Qinglan asked, regaining her usual calm tone.
“I will ask my sister. I think she knows someone who can cut it open,” Wen Huaxi replied honestly. She had not really thought that far ahead.
Cutting a raw stone was no big deal. Just find someone skilled.
“Think she does?” Yan Qinglan raised an eyebrow and looked at the stone again.
“Why don’t you let me handle it? I will get it opened and give you the finished piece afterward,” she offered, worried that Wen Huaxi might get scammed.
“You better not be thinking about stealing it from me!” Wen Huaxi immediately hugged the stone tightly and gave Yan Qinglan a warning glare.
“Do you really think I need your money?” Yan Qinglan was almost amused by her.
“Jie would never steal from Xiaoxi,” she said, rubbing her forehead as she gently separated Wen Huaxi from the cold, heavy stone.
“Then you have to promise. Even if you fall in love with the finished piece, I will only give you ten percent.”
Wen Huaxi still wanted to keep some reward for herself, in case Yan Qinglan really ended up taking the jade.
“Ten percent?” Yan Qinglan lifted her eyebrow.
She had thought this little girl was stingy and would never share anything. The fact that she was offering a portion surprised her.
Just as she was about to say something nice about Wen Huaxi being generous, she remembered the jade had been bought with her money.
She immediately took the compliment back.
“Fine then. Fifteen percent,” Wen Huaxi said, reluctantly increasing the offer.
Yan Qinglan could tell that she could definitely bargain with this girl.
“Isn’t that a little low, Xiaoxi? I was the one who paid for the stone.”
Wen Huaxi gritted her teeth. “Twenty percent! You said you would buy it for me. And you were in the wrong earlier! This is compensation.”
Yan Qinglan nodded, holding back the urge to call her adorable again.
Seeing that she had won, Wen Huaxi made a silly face behind Yan Qinglan’s back.
So stingy. Always trying to take her things. So annoying.
As for the dress, it did not fit perfectly.
But Wen Huaxi had gotten Du Jiayan’s contact information. That was much more valuable than the dress itself.
Yan Qinglan checked over the medicinal herbs she had received, then narrowed her eyes.
“What is it?” Wen Huaxi asked, putting the dress aside and leaning in.
It was her first time seeing such old herbs that seemed to carry a trace of spiritual energy.
Before this, she had only heard that there were many mysterious things in the world that defied the laws of natural science. But she had never seen one with her own eyes.
These two medicinal herbs were among those rare things, barely touching the edges of that secret world.
Yan Qinglan set down the flower with its roots still attached. “Two petals are missing.”
“Petals? You can tell just by looking?” Wen Huaxi was full of curiosity.
To be honest, herbs like this should not have appeared in a surface-level auction.
“It’s not aged enough. No one should have been competing with me for it.”
Yan Qinglan seemed to guess what Wen Huaxi was thinking and explained casually.
She let out a slow breath. She was beginning to understand the real reason behind today’s car accident.
“Jie, are you looking for medicine for our mother?”
Yan Qinglan glanced at her.
She was always so distant from her, always thinking about running away, yet when it came to Yan Mingzhu, she casually called her “our mother.”
Yan Qinglan seriously wondered: if they ever truly divorced, would Wen Huaxi choose to stay just because of Yan Mingzhu? Or after separating, would she still visit her on her own?
“Yes.” Even if she felt a little sour inside, Yan Qinglan kept her expression calm and composed.
“Then you should go to the inner auctions.” Wen Huaxi thought aloud.
She did not know the full extent of Yan Mingzhu’s illness. But had it already gotten to the point where Yan Qinglan had to run around searching for medicine?
In her past life, it had not gotten this bad until two years later.
Her return to this life, like a butterfly flapping its wings, had really changed a lot.
“I don’t have the identity clearance. I can’t get in.” Yan Qinglan shook her head.
These herbs were ones she had intercepted on their way out.
Those people insisted she win them at auction instead of simply buying them outright.
Maybe it was because someone was waiting for a chance to snatch them from her at the end?
They fell silent, both lost in thought.
Suddenly, Wen Huaxi had a flash of insight.
“Yan Qinglan, what if that Gu Lian you can’t find any information on… what if he’s not from our world?”
Yan Qinglan immediately understood what she meant.
“If that’s true, then this is a big problem.” That would mean that no matter how capable she was, she might still not be able to protect her mother.
But why would Yan Mingzhu have any connection to that kind of world?
Yan Qinglan had stopped wondering how Wen Huaxi knew about those kinds of beings.
This was a girl who could see things before they happened. Who knew what strange experiences she had gone through?
Just like herself—doing absolutely nothing and yet suddenly gaining a strange memory that felt like a warning or hint from the future.
Hearing Yan Qinglan speak that way, Wen Huaxi also started to feel worried.
“Yan Qinglan, I’ll go visit our mother tomorrow. I only have two more days before filming starts.”
“All right. Your shoot is in the capital, isn’t it?” Yan Qinglan relaxed her brows a little.
Worry alone would not solve anything. She still had to find a way forward.
At the very least, she was no longer the only one trying.
“Of course it’s not in the capital… wait, it is.” Wen Huaxi opened the contract to confirm and instantly had a bad feeling.
“Remember to come home,” Yan Qinglan said, reaching out and pulling Wen Huaxi into her arms.
The heavy, almost oppressive aura wrapped around her. Wen Huaxi froze in place, then slowly sank into Yan Qinglan’s embrace.
Her ears turned red, the color spreading to her cheeks and the tip of her nose.
Tears welled in her eyes, though she kept her tone defiant. “What if it’s really far? The crew already arranged hotel rooms for us. Why would I come home?”
Wen Huaxi reached out and tried to push Yan Qinglan away.
“I’ll come pick you up,” Yan Qinglan said, pretending to be pushed, loosening her arms just enough for Wen Huaxi to slip out like a fish.
The moment she was gone from her embrace, Yan Qinglan felt a tightness in her chest, and her eyelid twitched uncontrollably.
She was sure of it now. She was genuinely afraid of Wen Huaxi leaving her, though she still could not explain why.
“Then… what if it’s really late? Sometimes night scenes can go until midnight or even later.”
Wen Huaxi curled up on the other side of the couch, watching Yan Qinglan with caution.
Yan Qinglan stood up, returning to her usual calm and noble demeanor. “I’ll wait for you, Xiaoxi.”
Wen Huaxi swallowed nervously. “Yan Qinglan, do you really need me to come home? Isn’t that a bit much?”
“That’s because Xiaoxi always wants to run away.”
Yan Qinglan turned her head slightly. “I’m worried about you. I’m scared you’ll disappear.”
Her voice was calm, but there was a sincerity in her words that felt like it came from deep within.
