This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 84
As a vast family-owned enterprise, Galaxy Corporation’s Shareholders’ Meeting is attended by family members and convened twice a year.
With the modernization of the family business structure, family members hold all shares. The CEO is selected by the shareholders’ vote and holds the operating rights, but certain operational rights are delegated to the Family Office, a team of expert consultants and financial housekeepers dedicated to serving the corporation.
The purpose of this Shareholders’ Meeting was to decide whether the spin-off industry of the Guardian Chip could be listed as a subsidiary of Galaxy Corporation, subject to a comprehensive review by the financial elite teams within the Family Office and a final shareholder vote.
“The Guardian Chip possesses multi-functional, high-performance compatibility. It can be utilized not only in biomedicine, the automotive sector, and the retail industry, but even in smart real estate, the chip can play an even greater role. Looking ahead, the Guardian Chip will be capable of higher intensity operations that can surpass the human brain in certain fields.”
Everyone in the conference room watched Duan Yuluo giving his report at the front.
“Regarding other sub-sectors—”
In front of the screen, Duan Yuluo held the slide advancer. Just as he was about to flip to the next page, his voice abruptly ceased as a wave of nausea surged uncontrollably, his face turning instantly pale.
This hour-long presentation, including the time spent speaking and standing in place, was mentally exhausting, even more so during severe morning sickness.
He suppressed the discomfort, forcing out the last sentence: “The above is my overview of the establishment and development prospects of the Guardian Chip company. I ask the Shareholders’ Meeting to make its decision.”
After speaking, he walked back to his seat and sat down.
Old Master Chu (楚太爺), seated at the head of the table, fixed his gaze on his grandson, seemingly noticing something: “Yuluo.”
Duan Yuluo clasped his hands together, his thumbs pressing against the Hukou (tiger’s mouth) acupoint in an attempt to suppress the discomfort. He looked at Old Master Chu: “What is it, Great-Grandpa? Is there anything I need to supplement?”
“Go fetch the teacup from my desk,” Old Master Chu instructed: “The meeting is suspended for fifteen minutes.”
Duan Yuluo was stunned for a few seconds, confused about why Old Master Chu was asking him to fetch a teacup at this moment, but he didn’t ask further. He stood up and walked out.
He was grateful, however, that Old Master Chu had called him out, allowing him a moment to catch his breath.
He truly felt like vomiting.
Lu Xinghe was in the adjacent lounge. He was about to message Duan Yuluo to ask why the meeting hadn’t ended yet when he saw him passing by, his face looking unwell. He abruptly stood up: “Baby.”
Duan Yuluo stopped and looked toward the voice, seeing Lu Xinghe emerging from the lounge: “Why are you here?”
Afterward, he suddenly remembered and lightly slapped his forehead in annoyance: “I forgot you came with me.”
“Is the meeting over?” Lu Xinghe saw the conference room door was still closed: “Why are you out? Are you feeling unwell?”
“Great-Grandpa Chu asked me to fetch his teacup, which lets me step out for a moment. I feel a bit nauseous,” Duan Yuluo took Lu Xinghe’s hand, his eyes drooping with weariness, and said softly: “I also feel a bit sleepy.”
Lu Xinghe knew he had been sleeping excessively lately and handed him the lemon flower oil: “How much longer until the meeting finishes?”
The two walked toward the elevator.
“They’re just waiting for the voting now. It should be quick.”
“Then I’ll wait for you outside. I’ve already checked with Lin Wen; you have no schedule this afternoon, so we’ll head home right after.”
“Okay.”
The elevator stopped at the top floor. Once the door opened, Duan Yuluo headed straight to the right.
Lu Xinghe saw him going right and reached out to pull his wrist: “Wrong way. Great-Grandpa Chu’s office is on the left.”
Duan Yuluo: “?” He paused for two seconds, blinked, and then realized he was walking toward his own office. He smiled sheepishly: “I almost went the wrong way.”
He then proceeded toward Old Master Chu’s office.
Lu Xinghe chuckled softly, saying nothing, and followed him.
He thought to himself that his memory was already getting fuzzy at only seven weeks pregnant. What would happen later?
…
It took ten minutes to bring the tea back. Fortunately, stepping out had lessened the intense feeling of nausea.
Duan Yuluo placed the teacup in front of Old Master Chu: “Great-Grandpa Chu, please have your tea.”
Old Master Chu hummed and said: “Go back and sit down. Next time you report, you can sit. Standing is too tiring.”
The several elders, First Uncle, Second Uncle, and aunts sitting beside him: “?”
What kind of treatment was this? Could one report at a Shareholders’ Meeting while sitting?
Duan Yuluo was also stunned for a moment. Seeing how serious Old Master Chu was, he felt a little confused but smiled brightly: “Okay, thank you, Great-Grandpa Chu.”
He wondered why his Great-Grandpa was suddenly so kind to him.
It was pleasantly surprising.
After he sat down, the Family Office opposite began its comprehensive review of the content he had just presented. The analysis was very extensive and detailed.
At first, he listened very carefully. After all, this was the subsidiary company he personally wanted to establish, especially the self-developed Guardian Chip. If it could be successfully listed, it would be a stellar achievement he could claim.
But as he listened, his hand began to support his head, his eyelids grew heavy, and they slowly closed.
His head bobbed up and down, like he was dozing off while fishing.
This completely surprised Duan Yifan and Jiang Nianqiao, who were sitting nearby.
Although the Shareholders’ Meeting was composed of family members, it didn’t mean one could nap during the meeting.
And yet, this newly appointed CEO was starting to doze off.
Duan Yifan was afraid his little nephew would be scolded by Old Master Chu, so he pinched Duan Yuluo’s thigh under the table. It wasn’t very hard, but Duan Yuluo flinched violently, startled.
Duan Yuluo was woken up by the shock.
Accidentally, his elbow bumped the glass cup next to him. With a ‘bang,’ the glass shattered loudly on the floor, splashing water onto his trousers.
The commotion was not small, and everyone looked over.
Jiang Nianqiao was the first to react. She swiftly pulled Duan Yuluo’s chair next to hers. She sighed in relief when she saw that the fragments hadn’t cut his legs. She gave Duan Yifan a cool look and then pulled out a handkerchief from her pocket to wipe her cousin’s trousers.
Duan Yifan: “QAQ.”
So fierce.
Several secretaries quickly came over to clean up the broken glass.
Duan Yuluo himself hadn’t fully recovered. The shock of being woken up, combined with the sound of the shattering glass, left his mind blank. He was completely unaware that his expression was one of fright, with a light sweat on his forehead and a pale face.
He held his cousin Jiang Nianqiao’s hand and assured her he was fine.
Noticing everyone staring at him, he realized he had fallen asleep. Frustration flashed in his eyes as he looked at Old Master Chu: “…Great-Grandpa Chu, I’m sorry. I…”
“Yuluo, are you pregnant?”
This question, without exception, plunged the conference room into silence.
Duan Yuluo’s eyes flickered, and he looked at Old Master Chu in surprise, wondering how he had figured it out. He pursed his dry lips, enduring everyone’s gaze, feeling he couldn’t use pregnancy as an excuse for falling asleep during a Shareholders’ Meeting.
He lowered his eyes and apologized: “No, sorry, I was distracted.”
Given that the majority in the conference room were Alphas, they easily softened their hearts towards an Omega, especially one looking like Duan Yuluo did.
First Uncle Chu Beihang was the first to speak out.
First Uncle Chu Beihang pulled two tissues, crumpled them, and tossed them at Duan Yifan: “You little brat. So what if the kid fell asleep? Why did you wake him up and scare him? Back in the day, when Grandpa Gu fell asleep in meetings, Grandpa Luo even made a bed for him.”
Duan Yifan was hit harmlessly by the two light paper balls and looked innocent: “I was just afraid the kid would get criticized.”
Duan Yuluo quickly reached out for the tissues thrown at Duan Yifan: “No, I fell asleep on my own. Little Uncle just woke me up. Don’t blame him.”
“Enough,” Old Master Chu spoke.
The whole room fell silent.
Old Master Chu said: “Regarding Yuluo’s decision to establish the Guardian Chip company, I see no problem. As for acquiring that East City land for development, it’s not a difficult task.” He looked at the analysts from the Family Office: “Acquire it.”
Those few understated words were a command.
It meant that no matter how difficult the land was to obtain, they had to find a way to get it.
Duan Yuluo interjected: “Great-Grandpa Chu, Lu Xinghe said he would get this land for me.”
Old Master Chu raised an eyebrow: “Oh? He can get it?”
“Yes.”
Old Master Chu nodded, a look of admiration in his eyes: “That fellow is quite capable.” He then looked around at the other family members: “Let’s vote by a show of hands.”
Since the patriarch had spoken, naturally no one would oppose the establishment of the Guardian Chip company.
This meant that even the most difficult task had to be accomplished.
But generally, anything Chu Yiqiao (Old Master Chu) decided on never failed.
It only turned into a success story.
The meeting concluded, and the conference room doors opened.
As the members filed out, they saw the tall Alpha standing by the door, leisurely leaning against the wall and drinking coffee.
Seeing the door open and the group emerging, Lu Xinghe covered the coffee cup with his palm, stood up straight, and first greeted the elders. After the elders had left, he focused his attention on Duan Yuluo, sensing his slight melancholy, and walked over.
“What’s wrong?”
Duan Yuluo glanced at the coffee in Lu Xinghe’s hand, reached for it, but was dodged.
“You can’t drink that,” Lu Xinghe prevented him from taking it.
Duan Yuluo frowned and glared at him.
Lu Xinghe understood his look: “Looking at me won’t let you drink it either.”
“He was napping and I caught him,” Duan Yifan put his hand on Lu Xinghe’s shoulder, patted him, and joked: “Don’t overwork my little nephew. I scared him pretty bad when I woke him up.”
Then he was met with Lu Xinghe’s half-smile, which sent a chill down his spine.
“Hit him,” Jiang Nianqiao walked over and kindly took the coffee from Lu Xinghe’s hand.
Duan Yifan widened his eyes: “Are you fueling the fire?!”
Lu Xinghe then understood why Duan Yuluo’s face didn’t look so good. He curved his long arm, hooked Duan Yifan’s neck, tightened his grip, and leaned close to whisper:
“Who told you to wake him up? And you dared to scare him awake? Duan Yifan, it’s been a long time since I wanted to beat you up this badly.”
“Hey, Brother! This is the Shareholders’ Meeting! I was just afraid the kid would get scolded!”
Duan Yuluo saw how childish the two Alphas were when they got together, but he was too exhausted to stop them. He was so sleepy he couldn’t bear it. Seeing Jiang Nianqiao holding Lu Xinghe’s coffee, he reached out his hand.
But he grabbed empty air.
Jiang Nianqiao held the coffee up high, out of his reach: “Didn’t Lu Xinghe say you can’t drink it?”
“They’re fighting, just don’t tell him. I’m so tired, I just want one sip,” Duan Yuluo tried to reach for it again.
Jiang Nianqiao’s tone lifted slightly, nonchalantly: “Lu Xinghe, your wife wants to drink coffee.”
Duan Yuluo immediately withdrew his hand. Seeing Lu Xinghe’s eyes look over, he calmly adjusted his glasses and subtly shifted his gaze away, pretending he hadn’t done anything.
In the end, he was naturally escorted home.
Even after getting into the car, Lu Xinghe was still nagging.
“If I’m not right in front of you, will you just drink coffee or anything cold, whenever you want?”
“No way. I just said I was tired and wanted a sip to perk up.”
“Then did you forget you’re pregnant? You should try your best to avoid coffee.”
“You said ‘avoid,’ so occasionally having some shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Duan Yuluo, if you continue to disregard your health and want to argue with me, then I don’t know what to say.”
Lu Xinghe drove out of the parking lot, gripping the steering wheel. His voice was flat, and his sharp profile as he checked the rearview mirror added a kind of unspoken, cold pressure to his expressionless face.
After he said this, the car fell into a brief silence.
No one spoke for about two or three minutes.
As Lu Xinghe drove out of the roundabout, he glanced at Duan Yuluo, who was sitting in the passenger seat with his head bowed. He suddenly regretted his words. He naturally didn’t want to scold him; it was just frustration.
Especially since Duan Yuluo was pregnant, and the doctor had warned him not to let him get upset.
So, when the car slowly stopped at a red light ahead, he held the steering wheel and gently coaxed him: “Baby, I wasn’t being fierce. Don’t be angry, okay?”
The passenger seat remained silent.
Lu Xinghe thought Duan Yuluo was still angry. He opened the center console armrest with one hand, took out a strawberry-flavored lollipop, unwrapped it, and held it to Duan Yuluo’s lips: “Baby, I was wrong.”
“…Hoo.”
It was only then that he realized Duan Yuluo had his head down because he was asleep, not because he was ignoring him.
“Kiddo?”
“…Mmm?”
Duan Yuluo heard Lu Xinghe calling him in his ear, groggily opened his eyes, and met Lu Xinghe’s gaze sleepily. He saw the lollipop offered to him, lowered his head to take it into his mouth, then closed his eyes and leaned back against the seat to continue sleeping, mumbling indistinctly:
“Thank you, Baby.”
Lu Xinghe’s hand, holding the lollipop stick, remained suspended in mid-air: “…”
Had this guy been asleep the whole time?
He wasn’t angry with him.
Thank you?
He was truly laughed out of his frustration by this expectant father.
