- Chapter 47 - The Woman Behind a Successful Woman
Xia Mingtang made a trip back to the Xia family home, and came away with both good news and bad news.
The good news was that she now had in her possession a black card with an astronomical spending limit—she was no longer penniless.
The bad news was that Qin, with her grandmother’s backing, was now waving that authority around like an imperial edict, and insisted on controlling every aspect of her life.
From small things like eating habits to major ones like what time she came home, Qin had set restrictions everywhere.
Naturally, Xia Mingtang rebelled against such an unequal treaty at first. But after protesting for less than an hour, she discovered that the black card she had just gotten—before she could even warm it in her hands—had been frozen.
Sigh, forget it. These days, money is everything. A wise woman doesn’t suffer a loss in front of her eyes.
So what if she wasn’t allowed to eat raw or iced food, or had to come home every night after work?
No big deal—she could endure it.
She quickly talked herself into acceptance.
But she had underestimated the problem. After living by the rules for seven days, her inner rebellious streak finally reached its peak.
She got off work every day at 5:30, and Qin required that she must be back at the villa by 6:30 sharp. Qin had even mapped out her route and accounted for traffic jams—leaving no extra margin at all.
Yesterday, when she arrived just two minutes late, that big-tailed wolf had seized the chance and smacked her bottom twice.
So what if she stopped on the way home to buy something? Wouldn’t her poor butt get beaten raw?
Of course, she could leave work early—she hardly ever worked full hours before marriage.
But why should she have to leave early just because of these perverse rules?
Ever since getting married, Xia Mingtang had developed an unprecedented love for work—she hadn’t been late or left early even once.
She felt freer at the office than at home.
After all, in the whole company, everyone had to listen to her.
At this moment, sitting in her office, Xia Mingtang was caught in an internal struggle.
Should she choose to resist tyranny and go back to being penniless?
Or should she endure it silently, living as a caged bird with money but no freedom?
She chose a third path: endure humiliation, work hard, and one day achieve financial independence—then kick that controlling freak straight into the Pacific Ocean!
Recently, her small advertising firm had landed a huge client: Chuangxiang Technology, who had commissioned them to produce a concept advertisement.
Chuangxiang Technology was a globally renowned tech company headquartered in the U.S., specializing in high-tech electronic products.
Not long ago, they had launched the first generation of intelligent robots, designed to assist with human daily tasks.
When the order first came in, everyone at Xia Mingtang’s company could hardly believe it.
Not only was the commission fee enough to cover the year’s KPI targets, but also—how on earth had such a global giant picked their tiny, obscure firm out of the vast sea of agencies?
Xia Mingtang, however, was brimming with confidence: This must be Heaven rewarding my recent diligence.
With spring arriving in her career, Xia Mingtang was radiant. She carefully dressed herself up and personally went to meet the client’s representative, Susan, determined to satisfy her customer completely.
She entered the conference room expecting to see a blonde, blue-eyed foreign woman. Instead, what greeted her was a stunning Chinese beauty with mid-length black hair, dressed in a tailored suit.
Though Susan, like the woman back home, belonged to the cool, elegant type of beauty, she carried a warm air of approachability—none of that usual “big client” arrogance.
When Xia Mingtang entered, Susan stood up to shake her hand. “Chuangxiang Technology’s CMO, Susan. You can also call me by my Chinese name, Ran Shu.”
“Xia Mingtang, head of Star Advertising. I’ve reviewed your company’s requirements—we’ll put in our full effort to deliver. Today I’d like to discuss the project details with you…”
Once Xia Mingtang slipped into work mode, she was like a different person—her tone mature and professional.
The negotiation proceeded smoothly. Even when small disagreements arose, consensus was reached quickly; bigger issues were set aside for later.
After three hours, both sides had already agreed on 80% of the project—a speed better than many smaller contracts.
Her impression of this client sister immediately rose several notches.
By 5:30, Ran Shu was even more punctual about leaving work than Xia Mingtang herself.
“Let’s stop here for today. The remaining details I’ll have my assistant follow up on later. With you in charge, I believe the final product will be very satisfactory.”
As they shook hands, Xia Mingtang glanced at the clock and hurriedly gathered her papers.
These days, she felt as though she had an alarm clock implanted—if she didn’t get home on time, she’d be spanked.
Seeing her flustered movements, Ran Shu smiled. “Are you heading home, President Xia? Could I trouble you for a ride?”
Xia Mingtang: Huh?
Ran Shu rose, amused by her dazed expression.
“Let me reintroduce myself. Ran Shu—Ah Yan’s cousin.”
Xia Mingtang: …What the hell? How can I even bump into that big-tailed wolf’s relatives at work?
Noticing her hesitation, Ran Shu quickly clarified.
“Don’t misunderstand. Yes, I know you because of Ah Yan, but the decision to award this project to you came after reviewing your previous work. It was also approved by our headquarters’ management.”
At that, Xia Mingtang finally felt relieved.
All right then, Big Sister Client really does appreciate my ability.
Having had a favorable impression of Ran Shu from the start, she now wholeheartedly welcomed her into the car. All the way, she chirped like a sparrow, endlessly chatty.
“Sis, I hardly ever saw you in Rongcheng before—did you just come back from the U.S.?”
“Sis, have you found a place to stay yet? Want to live with us?”
“Sis, when was the last time you left Rongcheng? The city’s changed so much, I can show you around!”
“Sis…”
“Sis…”
“Sis…”
Her excitement wasn’t only because of her good impression of Ran Shu, but also because—with Qin’s cousin in her car, she had a perfectly legitimate excuse to be late going home!
Ran Shu was patient, never minding the chatter, and answered every question.
“I arrived yesterday, staying at a friend’s place. It’s been many years since I left. Not today though—let’s meet Ah Yan first.”
Hearing that last part, Xia Mingtang bit her lip in disappointment: Ugh… still no chance to go play today.
But she respected Ran Shu’s wishes and drove toward the West Well Villa.
At 6:47, her white Pagani rolled through the villa gates.
She had stopped along the way to buy local Rongcheng snacks for Ran Shu, which delayed her.
Inside, Qin heard the alert from the front gate. Her eyes darkened.
She had just conjured up a grim scenario in her head when her little fox appeared at the door, beaming, accompanied by another woman—clearly on close terms.
Qin clenched her palm, exerting immense control to stop herself from punishing the little fox on the spot. But when the woman turned around, she froze.
“Cousin?”
“Ah Yan.” Ran Shu smiled, stepping forward. “I heard you got married. Sorry I missed the wedding.”
“No matter. You’re here now, that’s what counts. When did you arrive? Why didn’t you let me pick you up?”
Ran Shu was one of Qin’s only remaining blood relatives in this world—the Ji family didn’t count.
Her ability to establish herself in the U.S. owed much to Ran Shu and Xie An’s support.
So while Qin could be cold to outsiders, she deeply valued this cousin.
“I came here for work—no need for you to pick me up. But today I happened to hitch a ride with your Tangtang. By the way, she’s quite the driver.”
Driving a sports car down the highway, overtaking several cars without once speeding or breaking rules—that did take skill.
Flushed with pride, Xia Mingtang tried to act modest.
“You flatter me, Sis. I just like to play around with different cars, so I got better over time.”
Sis?
Qin’s gaze hardened, her voice unreadable. “Call her cousin.”
Xia Mingtang blinked. “I know Ran Shu is your cousin, but I like calling her Sis.”
She had a quirk she wasn’t even aware of—she always played the obedient little sister in front of beautiful women.
Back at the Cloud Inn it was the same, and now too.
Having known Qin for years, Ran Shu immediately sensed the low pressure in the room.
She stepped in, taking one hand each, and smoothly diverted the tension. “Let’s talk inside. Surely you won’t make me stand out here in the cold wind?”
The three of them sat down in the living room. Qin instructed Aunt Zhou to have the chef add two more dishes.
She and Ran Shu hadn’t met for some time, so there was much to catch up on.
“So you’re back this time to open Chuangxiang’s domestic market. Then you’ll need reliable partners in advertising and marketing—I can put together a list for you.”
The moment Qin finished, Xia Mingtang smugly raised her chin.
“No need. Sis Ran Shu already found a reliable ad company—mine! Star Advertising!”
For a moment, Qin’s expression cracked. She looked at Ran Shu for confirmation.
Ran Shu generously backed her up. “That’s right. I just met with Tangtang today. Don’t worry, I didn’t choose her because of you. I chose her because I’d seen her firm’s past work, and our headquarters was satisfied as well.”
Each time Ran Shu spoke, Xia Mingtang nodded vigorously at her side, showing complete agreement.
Qin looked at her wife, then at her cousin, still finding the whole thing hard to believe.
“You’re certain? You don’t want to reconsider?”
That was the last straw for Xia Mingtang.
What’s that supposed to mean? I worked hard to land this huge contract, and now you want to ruin it for me?
She jumped up, hands on her hips, glaring at Qin with full momentum.
“Reconsider what? Sis Ran Shu and I already signed the contract! Can’t you just quietly be the woman behind a successful woman for once? Stop trying to trip me up every day!”
As she moved, the birdcage pendant on her chest jingled with a clear dingling.
The hollow platinum cage tapped against her fair skin, and a faint red glow flickered from the jade base inside.
Ran Shu, hearing the sound, turned her head. She glanced at the necklace hanging on Xia Mingtang’s neck, then at Qin’s darkened gaze, her own expression growing thoughtful.
