- Chapter 20 - I was truly captivated by your charm
Xia Mingtang looked up and saw who it was. She roughly wiped her tears with her sleeve, got up, and began to leave.
Earlier that day, she had left the “There’s a Guesthouse” in a rather dramatic fashion. Now, less than a day later, Qin Yan was seeing her in such a pathetic state.
Xia Mingtang felt both awkward and upset. With her head down, she charged straight ahead.
Her movements were so fast that Qin Yan didn’t react in time. “Watch out…”
The words had just left Qin Yan’s mouth when with a loud ‘bang,’ Xia Mingtang ran directly into a telephone pole. The pole was as dark as the night and just as solid. A large bump instantly rose on her forehead.
She already had a bump on the back of her head from when she was knocked out after being enchanted by someone earlier, and now she had another one on her forehead.
She touched the two bumps, one in the front and one in the back, and pouted, feeling incredibly wronged.
Qin Yan caught up to her, took out a handkerchief, wiped away the moisture on her face, and consoled her. “Please don’t cry anymore. You’ve scared away all the dogs within a ten-mile radius.”
Xia Mingtang was about to cry again, but these words stopped her in her tracks.
She snatched the handkerchief and wiped her own tears, muttering fiercely, “It’s not that exaggerated. At most, it’s one mile.”
Xia Mingtang’s sadness came and went quickly. With Qin Yan’s interruption, she managed to calm down.
She looked at Qin Yan, who was as gentle and kind as always.
She opened her mouth, unsure of what to say.
“Grrr…”
Her stomach understood its owner’s desires better than her brain and made a timely noise.
Qin Yan glanced at the sulking girl beside her and said smoothly, “Let’s go. We’ll get you something to eat first.”
Qin Yan led Xia Mingtang back to the guesthouse. By this time, the staff and guests had all gone to bed. She used the ingredients in the small kitchen to make a bowl of crossing-the-bridge noodles.
Xia Mingtang was no longer reserved. The moment the clay pot with the noodles was placed on the table, she skillfully unwrapped her chopsticks and began to eat with gusto.
Even as tears filled her eyes from the heat, they couldn’t stop her from putting more food in her mouth.
Qin Yan didn’t try to stop her. She just quietly pushed a cup of warm water closer to the table.
Xia Mingtang held her chopsticks in one hand and her cup in the other, completely focused on her meal. She ate the simple noodles as if they were a rare delicacy.
Seeing one’s food so appreciated is probably the most rewarding moment for a chef.
Fifteen minutes later, Xia Mingtang was full and her usual arrogant energy returned.
She pulled out a tissue to wipe her mouth, looked at Qin Yan across the table, and said politely, “Thanks for the meal. I’m going back now.”
Qin Yan curled her lips into a smile. “You’re just going to eat and leave, without any conscience?”
Xia Mingtang was a stubborn one. Even though she knew Qin Yan was being kind, she retorted, “Then I’ll pay for the food before I leave.”
She reached for her pocket, then realized… she didn’t have her phone.
Qin Yan watched her with a smile, not stopping her. When Xia Mingtang froze, Qin Yan added, “We don’t support credit.”
Xia Mingtang felt like crying again, but she had cried so many times today already.
Fortunately, this awkwardness didn’t last long. Qin Yan received a phone call.
“Yes, I understand.”
“I’ll be right there.”
She hung up and said to the girl who was puffing up her cheeks like a pufferfish, “Let’s go.”
Xia Mingtang was confused. “Where to?”
“To find the culprit who stole your things.”
Xia Mingtang initially thought she had just been the victim of a simple scam and robbery.
But when she followed Qin Yan into a deep alley to an underground room, she realized things were far more complicated.
Several girls were huddled in a corner, their feet chained, their faces filled with a uniform look of fear and numbness.
A burly, bearded man, who looked drunk, was yelling and hitting a woman in a blue shirt.
“You bitch! I told you to trick that little girl into coming here, and this is what you bring me? Where is she!”
He yelled, smashing the phone in his hand on the floor. He threatened, “I’ll give you one more chance. Tomorrow morning, you go and trick her into coming here, or your daughter will…”
The woman in the blue shirt had been emotionless and submissive until she heard the word “daughter.” Her expression changed noticeably.
Just as the drunk man was about to throw another punch, Qin Yan signaled to the bodyguard who had come with her. The bodyguard stepped forward and quickly subdued the man.
The drunk man was used to acting like a tyrant here. Suddenly being held down, he began to curse. “##! Who are you, and why are you grabbing me!”
The bodyguard ignored the man’s outburst and unemotionally escorted him out.
Xia Mingtang saw her suitcase in a corner but didn’t rush to get it. Instead, she looked at Qin Yan with a confused expression.
Qin Yan picked up a phone from the floor, returned it to its owner, and gave Xia Mingtang a reassuring look. “Let’s go and see what’s happening.”
As Xia Mingtang left the room, her gaze brushed past the woman in the blue shirt who had scammed her that day. She noticed the woman’s face seemed badly bruised.
The woman also saw her and lowered her head guiltily, avoiding eye contact.
Xia Mingtang was surprised to find so many police officers at the police station at one in the morning. Everyone was very polite to Qin Yan.
The drunk man was handed over to a police officer for questioning. From their conversation, Xia Mingtang began to understand the situation.
The man’s name was Zhang San, a human trafficker who was being pursued across cities and specialized in kidnapping women and children.
He had recently temporarily settled in Yunzhen and was scheduled to leave the next day to hand over the people to his clients.
Most of the women who were tricked were injected with drugs and chained so they couldn’t escape.
The woman in the blue shirt who was able to move around was actually also a victim of trafficking. However, Zhang San had her daughter as a hostage, and knowing her submissive nature, he had given her a certain degree of freedom, knowing she wouldn’t run away.
Tricking Xia Mingtang was a spur-of-the-moment decision but was based on careful observation. She was a single, non-local woman, with no one else around, couldn’t contact friends, had money, and was easy to deceive.
Of course, the last part wasn’t said explicitly.
After understanding the situation, Xia Mingtang finally had an outlet for her anger. She kicked Zhang San, who was tied to a chair, over and over.
“This is for harming people!”
“This is for deceiving me!”
“You’re worse than an animal!”
“You bastard!”
…
The police officers there seemed to know Qin Yan. They didn’t immediately stop the person who was openly committing assault in the police station.
After five minutes, an officer finally intervened, “That’s enough. This is a major inter-city case, and the perpetrator needs to be handed over to the police in the neighboring city.”
Xia Mingtang stopped kicking. The officer in a uniform began the routine lecture.
“Young lady, you need to be careful when you’re out alone. Don’t believe strangers. If you encounter someone who genuinely needs help, you should ask the police for help immediately.”
Xia Mingtang belatedly realized the seriousness of the situation. She had almost become a victim of human trafficking herself.
This time, she listened obediently to the officer’s entire lecture before asking, “Before we came, we saw many other people locked up in that room. What will happen to them?”
“Don’t worry, we will send them back to their families.”
Xia Mingtang nodded silently. The officer, seeing her downcast mood, comforted her.
“Actually, you’ve helped us in a roundabout way. This person was very good at hiding. If he hadn’t decided to pull off one last scam, we might not have had enough time to arrest him before he left Yunzhen.
“This trafficker is very cunning. He usually plans everything meticulously before acting. It’s thanks to your seemingly very… kind nature that he so easily exposed a flaw this time.”
Xia Mingtang didn’t feel like this was much of a compliment, but then she thought of the many girls in that room who could now get their freedom a little sooner because of her.
She felt that the troubles she had gone through didn’t seem so serious after all.
The matter was finally resolved. As Xia Mingtang left the police station, she saw the women who had been locked up in the room being escorted in by the police. They looked a little better than before.
The woman in the blue shirt was walking at the back of the group, holding a toddler. Xia Mingtang and she made eye contact for three seconds. In the woman’s eyes, she saw many emotions: guilt, gratitude, and relief.
In the end, Xia Mingtang said nothing and left.
After leaving the police station, Xia Mingtang was uncharacteristically quiet. Ten minutes passed without her saying a single word.
Qin Yan took the initiative to tease her, “I didn’t expect you to have no reaction at all to the woman who tricked you twice. I thought with your personality, you would never let yourself be taken advantage of.”
Xia Mingtang shook her head at this. “I don’t like to be taken advantage of, but I also know who the real enemy is. The one to blame is the man the police arrested. That woman is also a victim. If she hadn’t gone easy on me, I might have been captured with them.”
The girl who was crying an hour ago had now figured everything out.
The moonlight gently caressed her lovely face, making her already bright features even more radiant and captivating.
Qin Yan looked at the girl in front of her, her smile very gentle.
Xia Mingtang was a little unaccustomed to such a direct gaze. She scratched her cheek and said, trying to sound a little self-absorbed, “Why are you staring at me like that? Do you think what I said makes a lot of sense? Are you captivated by my charm?”
“Yes.” Qin Yan took a step closer, bending down to get very near, her voice carrying a hint of seduction. “I was truly captivated by your charm.”
