The Yandere Queen's Manual for Training Her Wife - Chapter 19
Though the excuse was flimsy, Xia Mingtang was determined to leave, and Qin Yan, as the inn owner, naturally didn’t try to stop her.
Xia Mingtang pulled her suitcase and walked for several streets. Since Grandma Xia hadn’t called her back yet, she couldn’t really return to Rongcheng, so she decided to find another place to stay for a while.
The stone pavement was a bit uneven, and the pull rod of her suitcase rattled with every bump.
As she walked, she complained in her heart about Shi Shi’s unreliability. Shi Shi would always come looking for her when there was nothing going on, but now, at this critical moment, her phone was unreachable.
Yun Town was a place that wasn’t too big or too small; turning a few streets brought her to a completely different area.
This place wasn’t as bustling and lively as South Street, where the “Have a Room” inn was located. The further she walked, the more deserted it felt. The few pedestrians she occasionally saw walked with their eyes straight ahead, seemingly uncurious about an outsider like her.
She passed several inns, all with their doors tightly shut, not looking very keen on doing business.
Xia Mingtang had been pulling her suitcase for a long time when she finally found an inn with an open door. Just as she was about to go in and ask, she saw a middle-aged woman at the entrance holding a young child, her face filled with helpless anxiety.
A pang of sympathy made her stop for a moment.
The woman saw Xia Mingtang and, as if she had found a lifeline, grabbed her sleeve and pleaded for help, “Sister, please help me. My child has a high fever and is about to die. Please, have a heart.”
Xia Mingtang wasn’t used to being so close to a stranger, but seeing the toddler in the woman’s arms with a flushed face and unconscious, she knew the situation was serious.
She forced herself to be patient and comforted her, “Don’t worry, ma’am. Let’s talk while we walk.”
Xia Mingtang hailed a tricycle and took the mother and child to the nearest hospital in town, where she also got a better understanding of their situation.
The woman said she was visiting a relative from out of town, only to find that the relative had already moved away. She was planning to go back, but her luggage and money were stolen. Then, her child developed a high fever. With nowhere to go, she could only ask a stranger for help.
When Xia Mingtang heard this, she felt a sense of camaraderie, as they were both strangers in this town, alone and with nowhere to go.
There weren’t many hospitals in town, and even on a weekday, the registration desk had a long line.
Seeing the woman struggling to hold her child, soothe her, and give her water, Xia Mingtang kindly offered, “Ma’am, you can take the child to sit on that chair over there. I’ll go register for you.”
The woman looked up, her face full of gratitude, “That would be a great help, sister. I’ll go take care of my child.”
She looked at Xia Mingtang’s royal blue suitcase and offered, “You can put your suitcase on the chair, and I’ll watch it for you.”
“Okay.”
After settling the mother and child and leaving her suitcase with them, Xia Mingtang went to stand in line.
The medical resources here were truly scarce. Despite so many people needing to see a doctor, there was only one registration window open.
Xia Mingtang stood in line for nearly half an hour before it was finally her turn. She handed the woman’s ID card to the clerk.
The clerk swiped the ID card on the machine several times, looking impatient, “Invalid ID. It won’t scan.”
“Huh?” Xia Mingtang leaned in and saw the red light on the machine. “Can you try scanning mine?” she asked.
The clerk handed back the ID, completely inflexible: “You’re registering for pediatrics. It has to be the patient’s or a direct relative’s ID.”
This delayed things for another two minutes, and the patients in line behind her started to get impatient.
“Are you registering or not? If not, just move along. Don’t waste our time.”
“Exactly, our kids are waiting to see the doctor.”
Having no choice, Xia Mingtang took back the ID and went to look for the mother and daughter.
She went to the chairs in the corridor but found them empty. She went to the staff at the entrance and asked, “Hello, have you seen a mother who was sitting here with a little girl? She was wearing a blue cloth shirt, about thirty-five years old.”
“A mother in a blue shirt with a daughter…” The staff member had a good memory and only had to think for a moment. “Oh, you mean her? She left almost half an hour ago. Her husband came to pick her up.”
“What! She has a husband?” Xia Mingtang was shocked.
The staff member gave her a look as if she were an idiot.
Realizing something was wrong, Xia Mingtang quickly followed up, “Then did you see the royal blue suitcase she was pulling? Where did she put it?”
“Where else would it be? Of course, she took it with her.”
The staff member’s expression clearly said, “You really are an idiot.”
Xia Mingtang’s heart finally sank. The person had been gone for so long that even if she wanted to chase her, there was no way to catch up.
Fortunately, her phone was still with her, so she wasn’t panicking yet.
She went back to the previous alley and found another inn to settle into for the time being.
The new room had a bad orientation; opening the window revealed a cramped alley. It was a far cry from Qin Yan’s place.
Sigh, when you’re on the road, you can’t be so picky.
Xia Mingtang sighed as she looked out the window, and suddenly, she saw a familiar figure: a woman in a blue cloth shirt, around thirty-five years old—the very same woman who had just scammed her!
“Stop!” Xia Mingtang shouted, and she jumped out of the first-floor window.
Her shout only made the woman see her and run even faster.
Xia Mingtang was wearing low-heeled leather shoes and shouted as she chased, “Don’t run! Give me back my suitcase!”
The more she shouted, the faster the woman in front ran. Xia Mingtang couldn’t understand why the child’s mother, who had looked so haggard earlier, now had so much energy.
Xia Mingtang wasn’t familiar with the area’s layout and nearly lost her several times, but thankfully, she was clever and managed to find her again at the last moment.
“I finally caught you.”
Seeing that the woman was at a dead end, Xia Mingtang took a few quick steps to grab her. But just as she was about to touch the woman’s clothes, her vision went black.
When she woke up again, it was pitch dark.
Xia Mingtang lifted the straw mat covering her, wiped the flour from her face, and, with the help of the moonlight, looked around.
She seemed to have passed this place while she was chasing the woman; it was a pile of junk in an alley corner.
So she had been knocked unconscious and dumped here?
She reached for her phone to get some light.
But her hand met with nothing.
So… the woman went through all that trouble to lure her here and knock her out just to steal a phone? The phone was only worth tens of thousands of yuan, but right now, without it, she really felt like she was going to die!
Luckily, she had already paid the rent for the new inn in the daytime, so she wasn’t panicking completely!
Xia Mingtang tried to walk back, relying on her memory, but it was pitch black all around, and the moonlight was blocked by the buildings once she reached the back of the houses.
Without a phone to navigate and with her surroundings completely deserted, there was not a single living soul to be seen.
She walked and walked, starting to lose her sense of direction.
Unable to find her way, she also didn’t dare to stop.
Xia Mingtang was filled with frustration and stomped her feet noisily on the uneven stone path.
Sometimes when people have bad luck, they even choke on water.
And when Xia Mingtang had bad luck, her heel would get stuck while walking.
The gaps between the stones on the path were already sparse, and she didn’t try to avoid them, stepping harder and harder with each stride. As a result, she successfully got her heel stuck in a crack and couldn’t get it out.
She crouched down and gritted her teeth, tugging for a long time before she finally pulled out half a heel.
Now, with one foot higher than the other, she simply took off her shoes, held them in her hand, and bravely charged forward.
As she walked, her face became wet with tears blurring her vision.
A few scattered bird calls made the night even more silent.
Xia Mingtang finally couldn’t hold back anymore. She crouched on the ground and cried uncontrollably, as if trying to pour out all the grievances she had suffered throughout the day.
Her crying was so piercing that it scared away the birds in the trees and the dogs on the street.
She was so engrossed in her crying that she didn’t notice someone had joined her.
Qin Yan crouched down and gently rubbed the top of her head. “Little crybaby.”
