- Chapter 7 - Like a Dog
“I can sleep on the floor!”
“That someone’s willing to sleep on the floor just to stay in my room…”
The honest guy’s cheeks flushed red, but he couldn’t help instinctively retorting:
“You’re the one who invited me first…”
Jiang Ji didn’t say anything.
In front of this woman who always turns things upside down, she truly had no strength to fight back and it was better to keep quiet to avoid being teased more.
Li Nianyi said as she hung her backpack behind the door, then went to the dining table to pour a glass of water and handed it to Jiang Ji:
“Cold water, to cool your temper.”
Under Jiang Ji’s somewhat plaintive gaze, she smiled and pointed to her earlobe, as if remembering something, then added: “Not your period, right?”
The woman shook her head and took the cup, secretly thinking that although this person seemed a bit scatterbrained, she was surprisingly considerate.
“Oh, by the way, just hang your coat on the small rack by the door. I’m going to change out of my wet clothes first.”
After Li Nianyi went into the bedroom, Jiang Ji began to look around the small space she lived in.
An extremely ordinary one-bedroom, one living room place. The kitchen and bathroom were tiny and pitiful. The mini deep vintage green fabric sofa looked like it could only fit two people at most. From the peeling paint at the corner between the ceiling and wall, you could tell the room was originally old.
But from the room’s arrangement and furniture, you could see how much the owner cared for it.
The walls and even the ceiling were covered with beautiful wallpaper, very very light blue, giving a soft and comfortable feeling. A handmade knitted blanket with a complicated, classical ethnic pattern was draped over the sofa’s back. There were no sofa cushions, only a big white goose plush toy leaning foolishly on the sofa’s armrest. On the wooden dining table, there were many beautiful cups transparent, ceramic, big and small… including the one in her hand, a tall glass printed with a line drawing of a little dog.
Although it was just a rented place, it was clearly loved dearly.
Nian Nian, she was a person who took life seriously…
So different from herself.
Jiang Ji suddenly felt a little sad.
She couldn’t quite analyze where this sudden emotion came from. Was it because she unexpectedly entered this woman’s living space and saw such a gentle version of her that she felt panic? Or was it guilt because she, a completely unrelated person, caused such a big trouble in her life?
Too bad, there’s no turning back now.
Once you pull the bowstring, there’s no arrow back.
“Jiang Jiejie.”
Li Nianyi suddenly pushed the door open.
“Can you stay up late tonight?”
Although Jiang Ji didn’t know what she wanted to do, she nodded.
“Then keep me company watching a movie… or a TV show.”
Before waiting for an answer, the woman stuffed a piece of clothing into Jiang Ji’s arms:
“You go change first, wearing that you definitely won’t be comfortable.”
Jiang Ji was dumbfounded as Li Nianyi pushed her into the room. From start to finish, she didn’t have time to say a word before everything was arranged clearly.
“Bang”
The door was closed by the person outside.
Jiang Ji stood stunned at the door, holding the sleepwear.
This was Nian Nian’s bedroom…
A simple room layout, with a dark wood wardrobe and a light blue floral single bed.
But it felt warm, the bedding must have the smell of sunlight.
Jiang Ji looked down at the cotton fabric in her hands a sleeveless plain sleep dress.
Compulsively, she lightly sniffed the dress.
It smelled good, but not like perfume or shower gel. A faint tea scent, like body lotion… or scrub residue left on the fabric.
This was the sleepwear she normally wore after showering?
That was why it left such a fragrance.
Her mind involuntarily flashed with some faintly rosy, indulgent images.
Only then did Jiang Ji realize what she was doing.
Oh my god! What kind of pervert was she?!
How could she act like a dog, hugging and sniffing someone else’s clothes?!
What the hell was she thinking just now?
Imagining things?
Jiang Ji felt disgusting and filthy.
Instinctively, she awkwardly threw the clothes onto the bed.
“Jiang Jiejie? Not done yet?”
“Almost!”
“You’re not doing anything bad, right?”
“No…”
A reply without any confidence.
Jiang Ji forced herself to stop the horrible images in her mind.
No more thinking!!
She shouted in her heart.
Then
“Um, Nian Nian…”
Jiang Ji slightly pushed the door open to show a shy half face.
Li Nianyi tilted her head: “What?”
“Your clothes are a bit tight…”
“Tight?” Li Nianyi frowned, “Where tight?”
She reached out to check, grabbing the door handle.
“Wait! Don’t”
But Jiang Ji’s words were too late. Li Nianyi, a bit impatient, directly pulled the door open.
“Ahem… so it’s tight here… Actually, it’s okay, looks good.”
Though tall, Li Nianyi had a small frame. Since Jiang Ji was muscular, with chest muscles too, the clothes naturally stretched a bit at the chest.
“Nian Nian, can you change into something else?”
Jiang Ji’s voice was small, not sure if it was from embarrassment or something else.
“T-then you wear this one? It’s pants, should be better…” Li Nianyi stammered, unusually shy.
“…Forget it, tight is tight.” After all, they wouldn’t be sleeping under the same quilt tonight.
Perhaps guessing Jiang Ji’s hesitation, Li Nianyi took a thin jacket from the wardrobe and draped it over her, then pushed her onto the sofa and sat next to her, holding the big silly white goose plush.
This mini sofa just fit two people exactly; any small movement would touch the other, making Jiang Ji stiffen.
“Um, what movie do you want to watch?”
“Huh? I’m fine with anything, whatever you like.”
The laptop was placed on Li Nianyi’s lap, and she flipped through her playlist.
Identity seriously? Watching a rainy night murder mystery during rain?
Triangle classic, but what if she already saw it?
Pearl her golden wig still on the wardrobe, scared of axe-wielding warnings, won’t watch.
After flipping through many options, it was either bloody or horror. Was she really into such heavy stuff?
She quietly searched:
“Movies suitable for two girls to watch together.”
“Movies for the ambiguous stage?”
#Dual female leads #Healing #Everyday life #Sweet
“Baby”
“What did you call me?!”
Jiang Ji leaned back in shock, her reaction huge when hearing Li Nianyi’s words.
“No!” Li Nianyi quickly waved her hands, holding up the screen:
“I meant this movie, ‘Baby Assassin’.”
“Oh…”
“What did you think? That I was calling you baby?”
Jiang Ji avoided eye contact, her ears turning red, shrinking helplessly to the other side of the sofa, wishing she could disappear or crawl under it.
Seeing Jiang Ji so nervous and shy, Li Nianyi teased even more:
“It’s just a misunderstanding, what’s embarrassing? Unless… you have something to hide. Are you secretly hoping I’d call you that?”
“You talk like that, how can you not cause misunderstandings.”
Jiang Ji dodged the topic.
“Alright, alright, my fault. Then shall we watch this?”
“Whatever you decide.”
The laptop was placed back on the coffee table, ready to start.
Li Nianyi sprawled on the sofa like she had no bones, completely relaxed. Jiang Ji beside her sat stiffly, a total contrast.
“Jiang Ji, come closer.”
Hearing this familiar phrase, the woman instantly became alert:
“What do you want to do now?”
Haha, such a lesson learned, she was much more cautious this time.
“I’m not trying to do anything. I just want to sit closer to you. It’s really hard to squeeze this wide gap on such a tiny sofa.”
“No way, who knows what you’ll do.”
Jiang Ji thought, this person’s heart wasn’t bad, but she had a really naughty mind.
“Trust me once. This time I’ll be honest!”
“Just honestly watch the movie.”
“Pfft”
Li Nianyi poured drinks in both their cups ahead of time, pointing to the little dog glass:
“From now on, you use this cup when you come to my place. Don’t get it wrong.” She turned the volume down to avoid disturbing the movie.
Jiang Ji suddenly felt a strange feeling rise a sour, tingling sensation, like something pricking her heart, followed by a long-lasting melancholy.
“Okay, I’ll use this cup from now on.”
Look at this person’s bad mind, pre-setting their future without her consent.
But why did she say yes?
Time passed quickly yet slowly watching the movie. Jiang Ji didn’t notice when Li Nianyi’s head fell on her shoulder, but she didn’t move away, carefully keeping her original posture.
Jiang Ji clearly felt Li Nianyi getting sleepy but still yawning and watching, finishing series 1 then continuing to series 2. Outside, the rain didn’t stop, creating a peaceful illusion of time standing still.
“If you’re sleepy, go to sleep.”
“No, there’s still something to do later.”
Jiang Ji was puzzled: “What could wait until midnight to do?”
Li Nianyi was yawning with tears in her eyes, about to answer when the phone rang again:
“Miss Li, we’re almost there, you can come downstairs now.”
It was Officer Mu Yuan.
Li Nianyi suddenly woke up. She quickly changed into a casual T-shirt and shorts, put on a baseball cap, took a transparent umbrella, ready to go out.
“I’m going to work now. Are you staying here or coming with me?”
Jiang Ji’s pupils shrank as she recognized the familiar outfit.
“I’ll come with you.”
