- The Woman I Was Flirting With Turned Out To Be A Chaebol Heiress
- Chapter 6 - It’s raining today
“Saionji Group’s originally designated heir wasn’t the current one, but her older brother. She was actually just a pawn arranged by the family to marry the president of the Kurosaki-kai, excluded early from the power center.”
Hearing this from senior sister, Li Nianyi raised an eyebrow: “Wait… Kurosaki-kai? You don’t mean that Kurosaki-kai that vanished without a trace, do you?”
Kurosaki-kai was a prominent yakuza group in Hiroshima during the 80s and 90s, but it suddenly declined more than ten years ago.
“Yes, that Kurosaki-kai,” senior sister nodded and continued animatedly:
“There have always been rumors that it was that woman who brought down Kurosaki-kai. As the chairman’s wife, she infiltrated and took control of the gang bit by bit, using extreme violence to seize power, employing thunderous methods to force such a giant organization to change its name overnight…
Starting from this event, she began the official succession battle. The result, as you know, is that the Saionji Group is now completely in her hands.”
Putting aside the truthfulness, senior sister’s story was dramatically compelling, and Li Nianyi nodded and clicked her tongue in amazement.
“Well, anyway, these kinds of things are just gossip mostly spun by tabloids trying to attract attention. You know, female entrepreneurs are most talked about for their scandalous love affairs.”
Li Nianyi agreed with a nod.
But whether the story was true or not, it had nothing to do with her. She was just an ordinary home tutor; the chance to meet this legendary woman was practically zero.
At this moment, her phone suddenly rang. Li Nianyi could only apologize with a glance to senior sister, ending their casual chat.
“Senior sister, you go ahead. I’ll step out to take the call.”
For dinner, Li Nianyi simply grabbed a cup of instant noodles at the convenience store. She had just received a call from Officer Kimoto, the one in charge of the fall to death case. The officer said the weather tonight was predicted to be similar to the night of the incident, and the police hoped she could assist in reconstructing the scene.
The instant noodles still steamed in front of her, but she wasn’t in a hurry to eat. Through the glass of the convenience store, Li Nianyi watched the steady drizzle outside.
The damp rainy season always made people unhappy. It inevitably made her think of moldy corners, damp blankets that never dried, pants accidentally soaked, and… the moment Suzuki died when she looked into her own eyes.
Stirring the noodles, perhaps overcooked a bit, the taste was hardly pleasant.
Li Nianyi missed Jiang Ji.
Truly, it’s easy to go from simple to luxurious, but hard to go back.
Thinking this, Li Nianyi honestly dialed Jiang Ji’s number.
The line rang for a long time before finally connecting. The voice on the other side was a bit noisy, with dynamic music playing in the background, like from a karaoke bar or somewhere similar.
Did Jiang Ji usually go to places like that?
“Niannian?”
Li Nianyi didn’t dig further. Everyone had their secrets, and their relationship wasn’t exactly one demanding full honesty.
“Nothing much, just missed you a little.”
She didn’t try to hide her feelings at all.
“Wait for me a moment.”
Probably because it was too noisy, Jiang Ji moved to a quieter spot.
Suddenly the background fell silent, and both of them were quiet for a few moments.
“It’s raining today…” “I miss you too…”
They said it almost simultaneously, then both fell silent again.
Suddenly, Li Nianyi smiled. Jiang Ji’s faint chuckle came through the phone like a gentle breeze, like the softest feather brushing her heart, making her smile lift.
“So you heard it…”
Jiang Ji gave a low “hm.”
“But I didn’t catch it clearly. Could you say it again?”
This time Jiang Ji didn’t answer.
Li Nianyi stopped speaking too and waited patiently.
The call continued, but all they could hear was the complex sound of rain outside.
Whose heartbeat was disrupted?
Finally.
“I miss you too… Niannian, I miss you.”
Jiang Ji whispered.
Plop.
Li Nianyi felt the raindrops fall on her heart, creating small but impossible-to-ignore ripples.
“Come see me.”
She hadn’t felt such an impulse in a long time.
The next moment, her thumb lightly touched the screen, and the phone’s beeping tone sounded after she hung up.
It’s raining today…
Actually, what I wanted to say was exactly what the rain wanted to say, the faint streaks of water passing outside your window wanted to say.
It’s raining today, I want to see you.
Li Nianyi suddenly felt annoyed; she shouldn’t have said that sentence.
But at this moment, she couldn’t figure out exactly which sentence she shouldn’t have said — was it “I miss you” or “Come see me”?
That sudden and abrupt hang-up just now made her feel timid.
Originally, she only wanted to tease the honest person when she felt unhappy, but it seemed she had somewhat gotten herself into trouble…
Li Nianyi sighed and poured out the now completely cold instant noodle broth.
The rain intensified, the sound of droplets hitting the windowsill was clear.
That call didn’t come back, and Jiang Ji didn’t know where she was. She probably wouldn’t come.
Maybe…
Forget it. She didn’t want to think about these things. There were important things to do tonight.
Li Nianyi packed up and prepared to go home. When she stepped out of the teaching building and stood under the eaves, a familiar figure suddenly appeared in her sight.
That person stood in the rain holding a thin umbrella, tall and slender, like the finest brushstroke in a painting.
Looks like she wasn’t the only impulsive one.
“Jiang Jiejie!”
She called out and ran toward her, heat and wetness clinging to her body. Splashing through puddles, she quickly got under Jiang Ji’s umbrella.
It felt indescribably refreshing.
The woman seemed a bit flustered: “Why did you just run over like that? Aren’t you afraid of getting wet?”
Jiang Ji tucked Li Nian’s wet bangs behind her ear: “Forget it, I’ll send you home first… I remember you live nearby, right?”
The raindrops hanging on her eyelashes were wiped away. As the mist cleared, Li Nianyi’s gaze returned to Jiang Ji.
Just now, through the rain curtain, she hadn’t seen clearly. Now, almost embraced in this person’s arms, she realized Jiang Ji’s outfit was completely different from before.
The loose fitting black blazer was paired with a silver gray shiny camisole, and Jiang Ji’s slightly furrowed expression turned her into a living ice queen.
Was she just coming out of some banquet?
“Jiang Ji, you look really beautiful today.”
Li Nianyi’s eyes sparkled as she looked up at the woman, who was slightly taller by about half a head. Jiang Ji couldn’t resist the compliment; a faint blush crept onto her ears.
The ice was melting because of her.
“Why don’t you just wait here? Getting wet might make you sick.”
“Getting sick isn’t so bad. Then I have an excuse to make you take care of me.”
Jiang Ji suddenly noticed the umbrella strapped to the side of Li Nianyi’s backpack.
She did it on purpose!
This little flirt!
“So stubborn.”
“And what about you, Jiang Ji? Aren’t you stubborn too?”
Li Nianyi hooked her finger around Jiang Ji’s, mischievously sliding between her fingers. Before Jiang Ji could react, their hands were intertwined.
She wanted to pull her hand back but couldn’t; she wanted to plead with her heart not to beat so wildly.
But neither happened.
“You didn’t even check if what I said was true or false and just left your friend over there to come see me. You’re the stubborn one here, right?”
Jiang Ji wanted to say those people weren’t really her friends, but it felt like her ability to think had been stripped away. She opened her mouth and subconsciously said:
“But I want to see you, and that’s sincere.”
So stubborn, and so hard to accept?
A car rushed by, splashing water loudly.
The two squeezed under the narrow umbrella, letting each other’s breath meld into their bodies.
“Jiang Ji, why do you want to see me?”
Why…?
The question made her mind buzz suddenly.
Jiang Ji actually knew Li Nianyi was special to her.
But why?
Why was it her?
Li Nianyi suddenly laughed softly and patted Jiang Ji’s shoulder, not sure if it was to break the attention.
“That’s enough. If you’re free tonight, stay at my place. I went to your place once, now you come to mine, that’s fair, right?”
“Ah? That’s fair?”
“Just say yes or no.”
“…Yes.”
“By the way, how did you know I was at school?”
“You said so last night when we chatted. You had to rush to the lab after work today.”
“Your memory’s really good…”
“Oh, I have something to do tonight, come with me. Since you’re staying over anyway.”
“What is it?”
“You’ll find out later.”
“…Okay.”
Jiang Ji followed Li Nianyi back to her small apartment. This apartment building wasn’t unfamiliar to her she had been here recently, but not for a proper reason.
“What a coincidence, I still have a pair of disposable slippers I grabbed from a hotel. You can use them.”
Li Nianyi took out a pair of unopened disposable slippers from the shoe cabinet and handed them to Jiang Ji:
“Feel free to sit on the sofa, but you have to change clothes before getting on the bed… For tonight, just wear my nightdress, anyway…”
She leaned close to Jiang Ji’s ear and whispered seductively:
“We should be at the stage where we can wear each other’s clothes, right?”
“You! Don’t come close to me without my permission anymore!”
“You were holding me the whole way just now. How come only officials can light the fire, and the commoners can’t light lamps?”
Li Nianyi raised her eyebrows with a little pride, sure that this woman couldn’t stop her mischief.
“If you’re only shy now, it’s too late. Don’t you know I only have one bed at home?”
