- Chapter 8 - Getting What She Wants
“Ah, actually, this matter is a bit long to explain.
But simply put, I witnessed someone being killed… cough, I mean in the literal, physical sense… And the victim was my senior sister.
There was no way around it I can only cooperate with the police in their investigation. Because today’s weather is similar to the day of the incident, I need to reenact the situation…
Anyway, I really hope this case ends soon.”
While going downstairs, Li Nianyi briefly described what had recently happened to her.
“I don’t know if it’s just my imagination, but since that event, I feel like I’ve turned into a jinx everything I do goes wrong. I’ve even been fired from several part-time jobs.”
Li Nianyi spoke resentfully.
“Sounds like it’s brought you quite a bit of trouble?”
For some reason, Jiang Ji seemed somewhat downcast. Although her face showed no obvious emotion, Li Nianyi could perceive the subtle and delicate change.
“It’s definitely troublesome, but because of this, I met you. And I also found a higher paying job. My unlucky streak must have passed.”
With a turn, Li Nianyi blocked Jiang Ji’s path.
“Actually, thinking about it now, this might be fate… If it weren’t for those annoying things, I wouldn’t have walked into that bar where you were that night. This might sound cliché, but it really applies now. Jiang Ji, believe me, ‘everything is the best arrangement.’”
The woman in front of her smiled like a crescent moon an expression etched deeply into someone’s mind.
Jiang Ji’s pupils trembled slightly. She suddenly found herself somewhat forgiving Li Nianyi for the kiss she had forced that night, because now, embarrassingly, she was having the same thought.
“All right, tonight you must stay up with me. If I don’t sleep, you’re not allowed to go back and sleep either.”
Just before losing control for a moment, Li Nianyi turned and walked lightly downstairs to Jiang Ji.
Hmph
Jiang Ji really could not hide her feelings at all. When those eyes looked at her moist and filled with desire, it was almost as if “I want to kiss you” was written all over her face. How could anyone be so straightforward and easy to read?
But Li Nianyi wouldn’t let Jiang Ji get what she wanted.
She knew well that intermittent reinforcement brought stronger pleasure.
Li Nianyi was always used to having control in her hands. She needed the security that came with total control it made her feel that she always had an escape and the power of choice.
But someone else wasn’t so happy. That heart, which had just been sheltered in a safe haven, was raised again.
After all, wasn’t all of Li Nianyi’s misfortune brought upon herself?
Even her current closeness carried some impure motives.
Was Jiang Ji really worthy of such a bright and beautiful smile?
“Miss Li, it’s really hard for you to come over so late to help.”
Just as she was about to leave the stairwell, a sharp and capable woman approached. She was the lead investigator, Mu Yuan.
Probably to avoid drawing attention and to protect the privacy of the case, she wasn’t wearing a police uniform. Her long, curly chestnut hair was tied in a low ponytail, and she wore thick black framed glasses on her nose, giving off a highly intelligent vibe.
“No problem, I want the culprit to be brought to justice as soon as possible.”
Suddenly, the woman caught sight of Jiang Ji, who was wearing a nightgown and a thin long-sleeve jacket. Despite the delicate clothes, Jiang Ji didn’t seem fragile at all. The ice and sharpness in her eyes made Mu Yuan instantly wary.
“And who is this?”
Mu Yuan clearly remembered that Li Nianyi lived alone.
Li Nianyi maintained her polite smile and explained casually, “Oh, she’s my friend. She just happened to stay over tonight, so I brought her down with me.”
“I see.”
The woman flashed her police ID to Jiang Ji.
“I’m Mu Yuan Kui, from Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Investigation Division 1.”
“Hello, my surname is Jiang.”
Mu Yuan frowned slightly, feeling Jiang Ji looked familiar but couldn’t recall where she had seen her before.
Without much further small talk, Mu Yuan took Li Nianyi to the convenience store where everything began, avoiding Jiang Ji, and instructed Li Nianyi:
“Miss Li, it’s okay to have someone accompany you during the reenactment, but next time you need to notify us in advance.”
Li Nianyi nodded quickly and explained that the guest staying over was a coincidence and she didn’t want to leave her alone at home.
Then, a steaming bowl of oden was handed to Li Nianyi.
“Here, this is your prop. You can have it as a late-night snack after the reenactment consider it a little compensation for waking you up so late.”
“Thanks, Officer Mu Yuan.”
Suddenly remembering something, Li Nianyi curiously asked:
“How is the investigation going? Any suspects?”
Mu Yuan sighed.
“You know the scene no surveillance footage, rainy night, and if the perpetrator cleaned up intentionally, the rain would have washed away all the traces.
The victim’s social circle is hard to trace for useful info, as you might know, Suzuki was introverted, rarely socialized, separated from family early, and had few friends. You could even be considered one of her closer acquaintances.”
Li Nianyi felt strange, recalling Suzuki’s gloomy and dark face.
She hadn’t expected one day to learn about her senior sister from the police, someone she barely knew but who was considered a close contact by the police.
“The key point is that on the fall spot the distance from Suzuki’s front door to the railing there were no signs of struggle or fighting.”
Hearing this, Li Nianyi’s pupils shrank, but she clearly saw a third person at the scene!
She began to doubt her own eyes was what she saw really true?
“What about the autopsy report? Anything unusual?”
“That won’t come out until next Monday at the earliest.”
Basic forensic reports typically take one to two weeks to be released.
Li Nianyi nodded somewhat disappointed.
Everything was ready. Li Nianyi stepped into a pair of plastic rain boots that had been unused for a long time , the mud stuck on the soles and edges hadn’t even been cleaned yet.
She opened a transparent umbrella and walked into the rain.
The familiar scene appeared before her eyes, but she couldn’t immerse herself in that night’s version of herself.
Many plainclothes police officers and recorders were present, completely different from the atmosphere of that night.
The rain pattered on the umbrella as Li Nianyi began recalling the scene she dreamt of every night.
That indistinct shadow approached her again and again like a beast hunting prey, but always stopped abruptly at the crucial moment.
Do you really exist?
At first, she thought the reenactment would just be a simple replay of what happened, but it lasted nearly two hours.
In her earpiece, the police repeatedly confirmed her position at the time of the incident and asked her to describe the scene constantly, adjusting positions, postures, and angles over and over.
The long memories of the night brought Li Nianyi not only exhaustion but also heavy mental pressure, but she gritted her teeth and continued.
Fortunately, she could see Jiang Ji quietly watching nearby, which gave her some comfort.
The officer playing the suspect wore the raincoat described by Li Nianyi, standing on the seventh floor conducting tests with a dummy.
“Not that spot, it should be a bit more to the left.”
“No, no, I didn’t see them in direct contact.”
“I heard the impact first, then turned to see the body behind me, then looked up. It was raining heavily, so I couldn’t see clearly, just a figure flashing by on the seventh floor…”
Li Nianyi’s testimony was less certain than at the police station but generally consistent.
After repeated experiments and calculations, Mu Yuan preliminarily concluded that the third person Li Nianye saw was probably not the one who pushed the victim.
Suzuki most likely fell by herself while trying to turn over.
But this alone wasn’t enough to clear the third person of suspicion.
Why did this person meet the victim late at night, and why did they disappear without a trace after witnessing her fall?
Many doubts still lingered.
Mu Yuan frowned looks like they’d have to wait for the autopsy report before continuing the investigation.
After all the complicated procedures, Li Nianyi was utterly exhausted.
“Jiang sister, I’m so tired…”
At the stairwell entrance, Li Nianyi almost collapsed onto Jiang Ji not as a ploy to bait her, but truly out of strengthlessness.
Fatigue, pain, muscle soreness…
To make matters worse, there was no elevator. Although she lived on a relatively low floor, the fourth floor now seemed like a chasm.
Suddenly, the world spun, and Li Nianyi found herself carried horizontally in someone’s arms.
“If you’re tired, just lean on me.”
Jiang Ji looked seriously at the person in her arms, as if gazing at something extremely precious.
Li Nianyi was sure no one could resist such deep, cold, pond-like eyes, especially when focused completely as if the whole world only had you.
Sometimes this person really made her wonder did she really know nothing, or was she an actress skilled in hunting hearts? How could she make such adorable moves unintentionally?
When close, the feeling of control and loss of control alternated, wrapping Li Nianyi’s trembling nerves like a poison she craved.
“Is it really okay for me to lean on you like this?”
Her fingertip lightly touched the place where the heart beat.
The pale skin flushed a sweet light pink instantly.
Looks like the latter possibility isn’t very likely.
“Mm, it’s okay.”
Through thin clothes, Li Nianyi pressed her ear against that warm body, listening to the pulsating heartbeat.
It’s okay…
Darling, please don’t spoil me like this, okay?
