The White Moonlight Omega Has Amnesia and Always Tries to Seduce Me - Chapter 62
It usually took about half an hour from the police station to the school, but with less traffic at night, the driver made it in just over twenty minutes. The dark night brought a slight breeze, rustling the willows planted inside the school.
Qin Huai walked alone on the way back to her dorm, her mind filled with the hushed voices of the couple she’d just heard. Her relationship with Hao Yan had never been good, and they had quarreled several times recently. But even so, she merely disliked this arrogant omega; she had never thought that the other person would leave this world.
The school was always particularly quiet at night, with only the convenience store and the canteen lights on. Many couples stood by the entrance of each dormitory building, avoiding all sight, kissing as if no one else was around in the corners they hid in.
By the time Qin Huai reached the entrance of her own dorm building, many of the couples had dispersed. Tall poplar trees cast grey shadows on the asphalt road, and the deep green trash bin was full, almost overflowing.
Qin Huai walked with her head down, her eyes on the ground, quietly counting the pebbles on the asphalt road beneath her feet. About two or three meters from the dorm entrance, Qin Huai tiredly rubbed her neck, just about to take out her phone to ask Luo Chen to open the door for her, when a familiar meow caught her attention.
It was a soft, clingy sound, like seeing someone familiar.
Qin Huai suddenly lifted her eyes and looked straight over.
Under the soft yellow streetlights, the alpha was wearing the same clothes as this morning, with her hair down and wearing slippers. She was pacing back and forth, holding the little cat in one arm. Her steps were slightly hurried; she would occasionally stop, glance at the roads on both sides, and when she didn’t see the familiar figure, she would take out her phone and start scrolling.
Qin Huai stared blankly at the graceful figure. The question of why Shen Zhi was here was answered by the small meowing sound.
She had originally planned to leave the lab to feed the cat, but she received a call from the police station halfway through. The feeding had to be shelved. A tiny cat like that would have nothing to eat left there, and the only other person who had been to that place was Shen Zhi. So, she had to call Shen Zhi for help.
It was at that moment that Qin Huai, despite having deleted Shen Zhi’s phone number and WeChat ID, could still press those digits onto the blank keypad.
Shen Zhi had just made a call, but after hearing the “beep beep beep” of the busy tone, there was still no answer. She put her phone away somewhat dejectedly, stroking the little cat’s orange fur with her palm, seeking comfort.
“She won’t abandon you,” Shen Zhi whispered into the cat’s ear. “Even if she abandons me, she won’t abandon you.”
The little cat meowed.
Qin Huai stared intently at the person and the cat not far away, her steps unconsciously moving forward. Shen Zhi was about to say something more to the cat, but halfway through, she suddenly heard footsteps not far away. She looked up without any warning, looking across the ground full of light.
Qin Huai’s long hair was casually tied up, with strands loosely falling around her temples. She looked less restrained and aloof than usual, instead showing a faint sense of fatigue. Shen Zhi squinted and noticed that Qin Huai’s eyes looked swollen, with a slight redness spreading at the corners, as if she had been crying.
Shen Zhi didn’t care about Qin Huai slowly walking towards her. She stepped forward, taking a few quick steps to stop in front of Qin Huai, “Where did you go?”
Qin Huai lowered her head, her gaze falling on Shen Zhi’s arm, and remained silent.
The orange fur looked warm under the light. The little kitten seemed to sense Qin Huai’s gaze, turning its head and blinking its eyes to act spoiled towards Qin Huai.
Qin Huai reached out, intending to take the cat from Shen Zhi’s arms, “Thank you.”
Sensing Qin Huai’s intention, Shen Zhi placed her other hand on the kitten’s head, and urgently asked, “Qin Huai, say something, what happened?”
“It’s nothing,” Qin Huai raised her eyes, which were calm and unperturbed beneath her thick eyelashes.
Shen Zhi wouldn’t believe her for a second, but she knew the character of the omega in front of her; if she didn’t want to talk, no amount of pressing would make her speak. Shen Zhi had to back down, but still didn’t hand the cat to Qin Huai. “This little cat is mine now. You can pet it and play with it whenever you want in the future.”
When looking for a home for the kitten, Qin Huai had always prepared for it to leave. But when this day truly came, her chest felt as if it had been soaked in sour liquid.
She retracted her hand, her tone flat, “I won’t.”
Shen Zhi’s smile froze on her lips, and the fingers holding the cat stopped moving, “What are you saying?”
“Nothing,” Qin Huai turned her face away, her gaze quick and sharp. “If you really like it, take good care of it. This little cat is a bit wild, so be prepared to be scratched. It’s quite picky and will only eat one brand once it likes it.”
“It’s fine. Anyway, you and I will raise it together.” Shen Zhi lowered her eyes and scratched the kitten’s chin. When she looked back at Qin Huai, her gaze paused slightly, and she took a gentle step forward, “Huai Huai, are you okay?”
Qin Huai was wearing thin long sleeves and long pants, revealing half of her delicate collarbones, which looked so fragile that they could be broken without any effort. She was pressing her lips together tightly, her face held rigidly because of the action, and yet her eyes seemed to be enduring something, afraid to move easily.
Shen Zhi became even more worried now. She bent down to put the cat on the ground, stood up, and moved closer to Qin Huai, cautiously asking, “Huai Huai, what on earth is wrong? Tell me, don’t keep it inside. Seeing you like this makes me feel awful.”
Qin Huai maintained her posture, not saying a word.
Shen Zhi couldn’t get through to her from this side, so she moved to the other, going around Qin Huai’s back. “Huai Huai, don’t make me worry. Tell me, I can help you figure it out. You have me.”
Perhaps one of those words touched a chord in Qin Huai, and she could no longer hold back. She lowered her head and rested her forehead on Shen Zhi’s shoulder.
Qin Huai’s scent was not mixed with too much sweetness like other omegas; instead, it was a very clear scent of laundry detergent. Shen Zhi’s body stiffened slightly when Qin Huai leaned her forehead on her shoulder. Looking down, she noticed the omega’s back was slightly trembling.
The omega didn’t burst into loud sobs; her voice was suppressed, as if she was deliberately holding something back. Even when Shen Zhi’s clothes became damp, her quiet crying didn’t stop.
Shen Zhi raised her arm and gently stroked the omega’s spine in an attempt to comfort her. She was afraid that Qin Huai knew about Qin Zhijing’s matter, but she couldn’t be sure if that was the reason, so she could only stand by, anxious and worried, yet unable to speak.
When the trembling in her back stopped, Qin Huai took a step back. She didn’t dare to look up, only looking at the ground, “I’m sorry.”
“Now that you’ve cried, shouldn’t you tell me what happened?” Shen Zhi was half a head taller than Qin Huai, so she had to bend her legs slightly, looking at Qin Huai’s face from the side.
“Hao Yan is dead,” Qin Huai wiped away the tears from the corner of her eyes with her hand, and when she looked up, her eyes were filled with confusion and doubt. “Although I disliked her, I never thought she would die.”
The breath Shen Zhi had been holding scattered a little. On the one hand, she was relieved that Qin Huai didn’t know about the other matter, but on the other hand, she was worried. If this incident could make her so sad, what would happen if the other matter were to explode later?
Too many thoughts were swirling in her mind, and she couldn’t manage to put on any other expression on her face. Qin Huai frowned, took a step back, and asked, sounding more like she was confirming than questioning, “You know about this?”
Shen Zhi initially intended to deny it, but realizing that this matter might cause some trouble later, she nodded and admitted, “I only found out yesterday.”
Qin Huai recalled the lonely backs of the parents sitting at the police station entrance and asked, “What exactly happened?”
“I don’t know much about it,” Shen Zhi recalled the message the investigator had casually sent her yesterday. “I heard that when she was found, there were many needle marks on her scent gland, and too many restraint marks on her body, though no signs of abuse.”
Perhaps it was the shared empathy as omegas, or perhaps it was the image of Hao Yan’s parents pleading at the police station entrance, but Qin Huai’s mouth was slightly open, her eyes hesitant and unable to confirm, “What is going on? How could this happen?”
Shen Zhi took a step forward, putting her arms under Qin Huai’s armpits, embracing her face-to-face. The physical contact made her feel Qin Huai’s trembling, so she released a tiny bit of her pheromones to comfort the omega in front of her, “Don’t be afraid. The police will find out and give her parents an explanation.”
The night wind was always gentle and comfortable. The leaves fell to the ground without making a sound. In this intimate embrace, Qin Huai seemed to forget to push her away, merely slowly closing her eyes and feeling the alpha’s faint sandalwood scent.
