- The Wealthy Old Man Carried a Child After His Divorce
- Chapter 20 - Almost Forgot This Was a Melodramatic Novel!
The next morning, Bai Yifeng arrived at the Medical Department very early. He had arrived early enough, yet Fang Xu had to get up even earlier, around dawn, for training. By 4:00 AM, Bai Yifeng could no longer sleep, so he got up to wander around his dormitory area. Somehow, his footsteps led him back to the entrance of the Medical Department.
The door to the inner chambers required Maisel’s fingerprint and retinal scan to open, so Bai Yifeng simply sat by the entrance of the outer lounge. There was a wall nearby covered in Medical Department notices and various files. Since he had been busy from the moment he arrived yesterday, Bai Yifeng had not had time to look through them. He took this undisturbed time to get to know the department.
Back when he was printing the divorce papers at the Fang family ancestral home, he had not missed the change in Louis’s expression. He had thought he would not see many paper documents in this world, but it seemed the Medical Department believed in full preparation; every electronic file had a physical backup.
From these materials, he learned that the working hours in the Medical Department were actually quite flexible. When there was nothing to do, one could sit from morning until night; when there was work, one would be busy from morning until night.
This overly familiar work style made Bai Yifeng sigh. He covered his face with a file, letting his mind wander. When he first realized where he was, he had planned to enjoy a life of luxury once he had money. He had not expected that after all the twists and turns, he would end up back in the same work mode he had before crossing over.
But perhaps that was for the best. He did not have to expend energy getting used to a new lifestyle. One must learn to comfort oneself to survive, right?
Estimating the time, he planned to head to the cafeteria to see if there was anything to eat. Last night, although Fang Xu had promised not to do anything, once they were under the covers, it was no longer up to Bai Yifeng. While they did not go all the way, the blonde Alpha still had plenty of ways to leave him nearly unable to get out of bed.
Bai Yifeng yawned and stretched, thankful his old waist did not let out a loud crack, when he saw a short figure approaching through the hallway. The person moved extremely fast, pushed open the lounge door, and headed straight for the cabinets with his head down. He did not seem to see Bai Yifeng as he fished out a bottle of suppressant from the corner. Just as he was about to inject it into his neck, a voice suddenly came from behind him.
“Are you in heat?”
The person jumped, dropping the suppressant on the floor. Fortunately, the lounge floor was carpeted, unlike the inner rooms; otherwise, the bottle would have shattered into pieces.
“Brother Bai, you, why are you here?”
Bai Yifeng stepped forward and bent down to pick up the suppressant, shaking it slightly. The pale yellow, translucent liquid rippled inside, causing Song Ye’s heart to flutter nervously along with it.
“Injectable suppressants are not very effective during a heat spike, are they?” Although Bai Yifeng held a prejudice against him, he did not make things difficult. He handed the suppressant back. Song Ye whispered a thank you, ignored Bai Yifeng’s comment, and skillfully injected the medicine into his neck. He finally breathed a sigh of relief and turned to activate a medical robot. After the little robot swallowed the empty bottle, he whispered, “If I do not use suppressants, it will affect my work. I have no choice. I am an Omega.”
“Then you should have used it in advance.” Bai Yifeng noticed his pale complexion. He knew that suppressants were not without side effects. Worried Song Ye might faint, he pulled a chair over for him. “Cramming at the last minute will not help.”
“It is still better than not using it at all.”
“Fang Yang did not mark you?” Bai Yifeng stared at the back of his neck as Song Ye lowered his head. There were bite marks, but no signs of a permanent mark.
Song Ye gasped and reflexively covered his nape. “I, I do not.”
“I am not going to eat you. No need to be so afraid of me.” Bai Yifeng pulled another chair and sat not far away, picking up another file from the wall. It turned out to be the staff directory for the Medical Department.
He had just joined, and Maisel had told him his data would not be entered until this morning at the earliest, so his name was not on it yet.
However, turning to the first page and seeing Song Ye’s ID photo gave him a start. The photo looked strangely familiar. Noticing his daze, the Omega leaned over to look. “That is a photo from my high school days. I have not changed it yet.”
Bai Yifeng compared the directory photo with the person in front of him and finally realized why he felt it was odd. High school Song Ye looked very much like himself, though Song Ye’s features were more delicate. You could not tell at a glance, but the resemblance was there.
The Beta let out a cold sneer. Was Fang Yang looking for a substitute this whole time?
Song Ye did not know why he was laughing. Just then, the side effects of the suppressant kicked in. Feeling nauseous, he covered his mouth and ran toward the restroom. Bai Yifeng did not take it to heart; Song Ye likely understood the awkward tension between them. Bai Yifeng’s voice yesterday had not been quiet, so Song Ye probably heard him.
If the “wedding gift” was not a hint about his betrayal of Maisel, what else could it be?
Bai Yifeng had just turned to the second page of the staff directory when he heard a muffled thud. Startled, he looked up to see Song Ye collapsed on the floor.
At that exact moment, Maisel arrived to clock in and activate the department’s identity verification. Reaching the door, he saw Bai Yifeng picking up Song Ye and asked in a panic, “What happened to him?”
“He collapsed after using the suppressant.” Bai Yifeng had no time for lengthy explanations. Song Ye had clearly wanted to vomit earlier, and there was likely vomit stuck in his throat. He needed manual help to get it out. “Come and help me.”
Without waiting for Maisel to open the inner door, he had Maisel clear the lounge table. He placed Song Ye on the table, lying on his side, and grabbed the wastebasket. Maisel realized what he was doing and quickly helped induce vomiting. Fortunately, Song Ye soon threw up and regained consciousness. It seemed he had only fainted from a sudden dizzy spell.
“I am sorry! I am so sorry!” Song Ye’s first reaction upon waking up was to apologize. Bai Yifeng was about to say it was fine when he heard him crying to Maisel, “I am sorry, I, I am pregnant, boohoo.”
Maisel was just taking his water and breakfast sandwich out of his bag to give to him. Hearing this, his hand shook, and the delicious ham sandwich fell to the floor with a splat.
Bai Yifeng: “Nothing.”
As busy as the Medical Department was yesterday, it was just as idle today.
Bai Yifeng sat bored at the lounge entrance, familiarizing himself with the names and faces of his colleagues while waiting for someone from Fang Xu’s side to take him for induction registration. However, Song Ye’s constant crying made it impossible for him to focus on the news. He closed his terminal and looked at the two people huddled together behind him.
Maisel was wiping Song Ye’s tears with a look of such heartbreak that it made Bai Yifeng’s stomach churn. It was only after Song Ye started crying that he remembered he had transmigrated into a trashy, unfinished, melodramatic wealthy family novel. Setting the unfinished and wealthy parts aside, the melodrama was truly top tier.
Come to think of it, he even had a share in this melodrama. After all, the person who ruined the happy engagement between Maisel and Song Ye was his own ex husband.
Bai Yifeng let out a “tsk.” Unable to stand it any longer, he got up to go get some fries from the cafeteria. Just as he stood up, a boy in a wheelchair poked his head in the door. Seeing him, the boy broke into a joyful smile. “Doctor Bai!”
“Will, why are you not in your ward?” Bai Yifeng recognized the boy whose fracture he had treated yesterday. He went over to check his condition and, after confirming he was fine, began pushing the wheelchair back to steer clear of the farce in the lounge.
It was simply annoying.
“I saw your photo on my father’s terminal. I came out for a stroll and to bring you this news.” Fifteen year old Will was quite tall for his age but had not differentiated yet; his voice still carried a youthful softness. “I did not expect Doctor Bai to work under my father. Maybe I can see you often now.”
“Your father?” Could this kid be related to his boss?
“Will! How can you run off without a word!”
An Alpha rushed out from the ward at the end of the corridor. Behind him followed a composed and solemn Fang Xu. Seeing Bai Yifeng pushing Will, Fang Xu looked pleasantly surprised but quickly suppressed the upward curve of his lips. As Bai Yifeng approached, Fang Xu introduced him. “Doctor Bai, this is the chief physician of the Combat Medical Department, Mondo. Mr. Mondo, this is my boyfriend.”
Mondo, who was about to scold his son for running around, was taken aback. After sending Will back to the ward, he stepped forward to shake Bai Yifeng’s hand. “I have heard much about you, Mr. Bai.”
“I also, huh?”
What do you mean “heard much about you”? This is our first meeting!
“The Colonel has been talking about you in the Combat Department for nearly half a month. I finally have the honor of meeting you in person today,” Mondo said with a smile. “It is a great honor to work with you. Please give me your guidance in the future.”
“I should be the one saying that,” Bai Yifeng thought to himself. He glanced at Fang Xu, who was pretending to have heard nothing. When their eyes met, Fang Xu did not hide his grin. The Beta turned his attention back to the middle aged man and said politely, “I look forward to your guidance, Mr. Mondo.”
“Since we have run into each other, I will go inform Maisel. Why don’t you come with us to the Colonel’s side today to get familiar with things?” Mondo went back to the ward to tell his son not to run off before leading Fang Xu and Bai Yifeng toward the Medical Department. “Our Combat Medical Department actually has little connection to the official Medical Department; it is more closely linked with.”
Before he could finish, a scream erupted from inside the Medical Department. Song Ye, triggered by something, slapped Maisel across the face and ran out without looking back. If Bai Yifeng had not had the foresight to dodge, he would have been knocked over.
A staple of melodramatic novels: someone running out of a room must either trip or crash into someone.
“Maisel, what happened?” Fang Xu moved to shield Bai Yifeng and Mondo behind him, asking with a frown.
The protagonist of the farce seemed not to have recovered from the shock of the slap. Bai Yifeng vaguely heard him muttering. Listening closely, it turned out he was begging Song Ye not to break off their engagement.
Bai Yifeng: “What a loser.”
