- The Wealthy Old Man Carried a Child After His Divorce
- Chapter 18 - Your Head is Glowing Green!
“Mr. Bai, a pleasure to meet you. I am Marcel, and I will be responsible for your orientation.”
Bai Yifeng had not expected the person meeting him to be the same Marcel whom Fang Xu had demanded him from over the phone yesterday. He looked a bit different from the impression he gave on the call. He was about the same age as Bai Yifeng, looked very scholarly, and wore a traditional pair of gold-rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose.
He stepped forward and shook hands with Marcel, who seemed very nervous. Marcel glanced at a certain Alpha standing behind Bai Yifeng and tried to force a smile. “Colonel, may I take Mr. Bai with me now?”
The Beta turned around, and Fang Xu immediately swapped the threatening look on his face for a smile. He stepped forward unobtrusively to nuzzle Bai Yifeng’s cheek and left a light kiss near his lips before saying a reluctant goodbye. “I will come to pick you up this afternoon, Brother Feng.”
“I am not a child,” Bai Yifeng patted him and whispered, “Why are you still trying to intimidate people?”
Fang Xu leaned in to whisper in his ear quite openly, “My relationship with him is not great. If I do not scare him a little, I am afraid he might bully you.”
Bai Yifeng curled his lips. Seeing that Fang Xu was still unwilling to leave, he simply stood on his tiptoes, held his shoulders, and imitated his action by giving him a kiss. “Alright, do you not have a mission today as well? Go get busy. Should I wait for you to have dinner together tonight?”
“It will be a late one today. I will wait for you at the cafeteria,” Fang Xu sighed, finally being coaxed away by Bai Yifeng. Bai Yifeng turned to Marcel, who awkwardly adjusted his glasses. “The Colonel and Mr. Bai have such a good relationship. Before we begin the tour of the Medical Department, I would like to ask: your resume mentions you specialized in medicine. Could you tell me the specific field?”
“Clinical medicine.” Before crossing over, Bai Yifeng had been a surgical clinician at a city hospital. That car accident had happened precisely because he was working too late. However, as soon as the words left his mouth, he saw a moment of confusion on Marcel’s face. He then remembered that the medicine in this world was different from what he knew. He corrected himself, “Traditional medicine. I have combat-ready practical experience.”
“Ah, I understand,” Marcel realized, tapping on his terminal to record something while continuing his questions. “Then, what is your intended direction for development?”
Worrying that Bai Yifeng might not follow, he explained as they walked, “I am in charge of rear-line medical care, which involves the recuperation and care of soldiers after they are injured. Usually, we do not follow them to the battlefield. However, the medical unit under the Colonel is different. As long as the Colonel goes to battle, they must go along. Asking these questions is also to arrange other work for you during periods without missions. You do not mind, do you, Mr. Bai?”
“Of course not.” Bai Yifeng followed behind him, looking at the cluster of white buildings presented before him after passing through the military gates. Unlike the hospitals he was familiar with, these buildings all featured complex, patterned gabled roofs.
Marcel tucked his terminal away and took a deep breath, forcing a smile just like before, as if smiling was a difficult task for him. “Welcome to the Medical Department.”
Just as he finished speaking, both Bai Yifeng’s and Marcel’s terminals chimed simultaneously. Marcel hurriedly said, “It should be the system assignment. Let me see, when you are free, Mr. Bai, you will need to go to.”
Marcel’s words came to an abrupt halt upon seeing the message on his screen.
“It seems we will be working together for quite a while, Mr. Marcel,” Bai Yifeng said with a curl of his lips. Marcel did not know what to say and could only lead him to his own medical unit to collect the necessary supplies. The two did not speak much more along the way.
Bai Yifeng could tell that Marcel was different from him. Although he acted very timid, he was still an Alpha just like Fang Xu. Humans are diverse creatures, and Alphas are not always dominant. Bai Yifeng could understand that.
However, when he noticed that, aside from himself, Marcel’s medical unit was almost entirely composed of Omegas, he could not help but give Marcel another look. The latter swallowed hard. “I know many people would misunderstand my character seeing this, but I can guarantee that I am merely a frail academic.”
“Mr. Bai?” a questioning voice rose from behind Bai Yifeng. He turned around to see Song Ye, who had delivered the notice yesterday. Song Ye looked very surprised. “It really is Mr. Bai. Should you not be with the Colonel?”
“System assignment,” Bai Yifeng waved the terminal on his wrist and smiled. “It seems we share a bond of fate. We are colleagues from now on.”
Song Ye smiled shyly and shook hands with him. Bai Yifeng indeed detected the scent of an Alpha’s pheromones on him. Fang Xu had mentioned yesterday that Song Ye carried Fang Yang’s scent. Bai Yifeng kept this in mind but did not show it on the surface.
The Medical Department was truly short-staffed. Bai Yifeng had just put on his white coat and had not even donned his gloves when Marcel called him over. “I am very sorry, but I am afraid I must take up your lunch break. An emergency accident just occurred in the Central City, and casualties are being sent over. Can you help, Mr. Bai?”
“Certainly.” Hearing there were casualties, Bai Yifeng deftly put on his gloves and mask. “I thought we only handled military tasks.”
“The Medical Department needs to make money too,” Marcel said with a bitter smile. “You know, military funding is tight, otherwise we would not have such trouble recruiting people. If the Colonel had not asked for you, I might have actually tried to keep you here permanently.”
Looking at his bitter smile, Bai Yifeng originally wanted to tell him that he joined the Medical Department specifically to be closer to Fang Xu, but he ultimately kept it to himself.
Regardless of the past, his identity from now on was that of a healer. He had sworn an oath once, and he intended to carry it out to the end.
When the casualties arrived, almost none were conscious. Fortunately, everything was orderly, though Bai Yifeng still froze for a moment when he saw the medical room filled with robots.
He had forgotten this was an era of ultra-high technology.
“Mr. Bai, here.”
Looking at Song Ye rushing over with a pile of things, Bai Yifeng quickly took them from him. “Just call me by my name. You are my senior here.”
“How could I? I will call you Brother Bai,” Song Ye waved his hand and opened the box in his arms. “These are what Marcel asked me to find for you. He said it was an emergency and that it would be too late for someone from the traditional school like you to learn about medical robot knowledge. Luckily, there are some things here you can use.”
Bai Yifeng looked down, and the familiar medical items put him at ease. He quickly entered his professional state. Song Ye watched his professional techniques with some shock. He had not told Bai Yifeng that these items Marcel had him find were antiques. Although still in production, they were no longer in daily use.
He did not expect Bai Yifeng to be so proficient.
Not far away, Marcel was treating a casualty with a torn thigh. The medical robot kept emitting warning beeps, so he had to send someone for blood bags. During the wait, he happened to see Bai Yifeng comforting a boy who had just woken up. The boy had a fractured arm and extensive abrasions on his shoulder, but after Bai Yifeng performed the fixation and bandaging, the boy stopped crying in pain despite the blood on his clothes.
A confused expression appeared on the display of the medical robot behind the Beta, seemingly perplexed by the speed at which the patient’s condition stabilized. Bai Yifeng turned and saw the little fellow, smiling as he patted its head and pointed it in a certain direction.
Watching the small robot run toward another casualty, the boy also let out a laugh despite the pain in his hand.
A flash of sharp insight and regret passed behind Marcel’s gold-rimmed glasses. Before he could think further, a new situation arose, and he had to lower his head to continue treating the patient before him.
The Medical Department remained busy until the afternoon. Forget lunch; even the afternoon tea on the schedule never had a chance to appear. When the last green card, representing a stable condition awaiting observation, was hung at a casualty’s bedside, Marcel removed his glasses. He tiredly took off his gloves and placed them in the hand of a small robot at the door, watching as the robot opened its “mouth” to swallow the medical waste. A sudden voice behind him gave him a start.
“My apologies, I did not mean to startle you.” Seeing him nearly jump, Bai Yifeng said apologetically, “Are you alright?”
Marcel laughed sheepishly and put his glasses back on. “Hard work for you. I let you stay busy for so long on your very first day.”
“It was fine,” Bai Yifeng said silently to himself. As long as he did not have to work night shifts, he was fine. He truly had a psychological shadow regarding night shifts. “Do we need to stay on watch?”
“No need, we are only responsible for handling emergencies,” Marcel took a deep breath, adjusting his state. “We can go back and rest now. Interns will come to stay on watch. This is a good opportunity for them to gain experience.”
Bai Yifeng nodded and looked at Marcel once more. He did not know why Fang Xu’s relationship with Marcel was poor, but after a day of interaction, there seemed to be nothing particularly dislikeable about him, aside from a somewhat weak personality. For an Alpha, he was indeed a bit too weak.
“By the way, now that the unit for your leisure time has been confirmed today, someone from the Combat Medical Department should come to pick you up tomorrow,” Marcel walked with him toward the Medical Department headquarters. “Do not worry, it is just a handover. I hope we can get along well in the future.”
Before he could finish his sentence, the two heard a delicate exclamation. Bai Yifeng froze. Why did that voice sound familiar?
“It is Song Ye,” Marcel lowered his head. “Let us go quickly.”
The expression on his face was one of dejection. Bai Yifeng furrowed his brow slightly. As they passed the corridor, Bai Yifeng looked back, and his gaze happened to meet that of someone who should not have been there.
Fang Yang was also stunned. Song Ye, in his arms, looked up in confusion, then shyly lowered his head and leaned against Fang Yang’s chest upon seeing Bai Yifeng.
Bai Yifeng: “…”
He knew Fang Yang was promiscuous, but Song Ye still had the blood of casualties on him, and yet he could still stomach a kiss.
Truly impressive.
After walking for a while and passing through one more passage, they would be back at the Medical Department headquarters. Marcel suddenly stopped and said to Bai Yifeng in a low voice, “Mr. Bai, there is something I want to tell you personally. I expect you would ask the Colonel after you go back anyway, so I might as well tell you myself.”
The Beta’s thoughts had already shifted from “Fang Yang’s taste is truly unique” to “Where is the cafeteria and what should I eat later.” Hearing his words, he did not quite react. “What?”
Up ahead, a splash of gold waved under the afterglow of the sunset. Bai Yifeng looked over. It was Fang Xu already waiting for him. Marcel, beside him, removed his fogged-up glasses and wiped them with a handkerchief. “Actually, Song Ye is my fiancé.”
“My boyfriend is already waiting, so I will go over. Wait, what did you say?” Bai Yifeng’s brain nearly crashed. He looked at Marcel in shock. The latter put his glasses back on, looking as if he were about to cry. “We were supposed to get married in a month.”
Bai Yifeng: “…”
Brother, your head is glowing green.
