The Villainous Female Side Character Pretends to Be an Omega in the Apocalypse and Raises a Cat - Chapter 30.2
When it was Meng Qinghe’s turn to disembark, the moment she stepped out, a wave of heat surged over her. The nighttime temperature here was even higher than daytime in Rong City.
Noticing Meng Qinghe’s hesitation, Chi Yingdong took her hand.
Their clasped hands didn’t grow warm from the contact. Instead, a coolness spread from their palms, soothing Meng Qinghe’s discomfort.
Meng Qinghe looked around curiously.
The rescue aircraft had landed on a school playground.
The school had been taken over by the military, with armed soldiers patrolling the area.
A heavy, muffled explosion sounded in the distance, causing the air to tremble.
Meng Qinghe instinctively tightened her grip on Chi Yingdong’s sleeve and asked softly, “Where should we go now?”
They needed to stay in Hucheng for half a month, waiting for the temperature to drop before driving to the capital themselves.
During these two weeks, they first needed to find a place to stay.
The other passengers on their flight were all top talents from various fields, walking repositories of knowledge crucial to the nation. As soon as they disembarked, specialized teams escorted them to the base.
She and Chi Yingdong were merely hitching a ride; their names weren’t on the base’s recruitment list.
Neither of them had been to Hucheng before, leaving them momentarily unsure where to go.
The distant city skyline was shrouded in twilight, with faint glimmers of fire visible here and there. The faint scent of something burnt drifted through the air.
“Should we go to the base too?” Meng Qinghe suggested, her gaze fixed on the escorted team of experts.
Even if they couldn’t follow the team directly, they could still make their way there on their own.
Chi Yingdong’s ability level was fairly high; gaining entry to the base shouldn’t be difficult.
As for herself, Meng Qinghe felt troubled. She had no special abilities and wondered if she could tag along as a bonus: buy one, get one free.
Buy Chi Yingdong, get Meng Qinghe.
“Alright,” Chi Yingdong replied indifferently, not particularly caring about their destination. Yet when her eyes returned to Meng Qinghe, they held a trace of warmth. “It’s up to you. Whatever you decide is fine.”
They quietly followed the team at a distance, neither too close nor too far.
The road to the base had been cleared, with no zombies suddenly appearing.
Following the team, they smoothly reached the base’s perimeter.
At the entrance, two lanes were designated: the left for base personnel with identification cards, and the right for newcomers to register.
The experts naturally took the left lane, quickly disappearing behind the heavy metal doors.
As they parted ways, Chi Yingdong took one last glance at the strangely behaved woman.
By chance, their eyes met. The woman flinched and turned her face away, like a startled rabbit.
Chi Yingdong raised an eyebrow slightly and withdrew her gaze.
A long line stretched before the registration area.
Chi Yingdong led Meng Qinghe to the end of the queue, surrounded by weary refugees.
Some people wept softly, some wore numb expressions, while others had a glimmer of hope shining in their eyes.
Many wanted to enter the base, but the conditions for entry were strict. Soon, it was Chi Yingdong’s turn.
“Name.”
“Chi Yingdong.”
“What ability?”
“Ice-based.”
“Ability level?”
“Third tier.”
Chi Yingdong answered the inspector’s questions quickly.
The inspector’s pen suddenly paused. She looked up, her eyes wide behind her glasses.
“A third-tier ice ability user?”
Her voice unconsciously rose, drawing the attention of others in line.
Chi Yingdong nodded expressionlessly.
The inspector flusteredly pulled out another form, her tone noticeably more respectful. “Please wait a moment. Someone will take you for the city entry test shortly.”
Meng Qinghe took a deep breath, it would soon be her turn.
But then, Chi Yingdong suddenly pulled her into an embrace, her cool voice sounding by Meng Qinghe’s ear.
“My wife. We’re together.”
Despite the cool tone, it felt like a thunderclap had exploded in Meng Qinghe’s heart.
Her face flushed, and her heart raced.
She could feel Chi Yingdong’s arm firmly wrapped around her shoulder, carrying an undeniable strength.
The inspector nodded understandingly. Without asking Meng Qinghe any questions, she directly handed her a form.
Meng Qinghe blinked and took the form.
Had she successfully gotten a freebie with a strong purchase?
“Why does she get to do that?” someone behind them grumbled upon seeing this.
The inspector shot a cold glance at the speaker. “Because her wife is a third-tier ability user.”
After all, their base currently had no third-tier ability users. Now that one had finally arrived, what was wrong with giving her some privileges?
Not long after, the person assigned to take them for the city entry test jogged over.
It was a round-faced girl with a high ponytail, around seventeen or eighteen years old.
Her cheeks still had a hint of baby fat, and she wore a neatly pressed JK uniform, the navy-blue pleated skirt swaying gently with her steps.
Her skin was fair and clean, her nails trimmed neatly and rounded, even coated with a faint layer of clear polish.
All of this silently indicated that, even though the apocalypse had descended a month ago, her life had remained largely unaffected.
“Hello, sisters!” the girl greeted energetically, her eyes sparkling. “My name is Lin Qunjing. I’m here to take you for the city entry test.”
She studied Chi Yingdong curiously, her tone full of admiration. “Where did you come from? This is my first time meeting a third-tier ability user.”
Chi Yingdong remained silent as she walked, offering no response.
Meng Qinghe knew clearly that a girl who could maintain such a state in the apocalypse must have an extraordinary background.
She gave a friendly smile. “I’m Meng Qinghe, and she’s Chi Yingdong. We came from Rong City.”
As she spoke, she fished out a perfectly wrapped chocolate bar from her pocket.
Using her body to block the view, she quietly slipped it into Lin Qunjing’s hand and whispered, “Here’s some candy for you. I hope we can be friends.”
Lin Qunjing glanced down at the item in her palm. When she realized it was chocolate, her eyes instantly curved into crescents.
She quickly glanced around and swiftly tucked the chocolate into her pocket.
Even though she could still eat her fill and dress warmly in the apocalypse, luxuries like chocolate had become a rare sight for a long time.
Meng Qinghe noticed Lin Qunjing’s satisfaction and seized the opportunity to ask, “We’ve just arrived here and know nothing about the place. Could you tell us a bit about the base?”
Lin Qunjing clapped her hands and exclaimed, “You’ve asked the right person!”
She puffed out her chest with a hint of pride and showiness.
“My family lives inside the base. I’ve watched it being built day by day.”
As she led the way, she continued her explanation.
“The base is divided into the inner city and the outer city.”
“The outer city houses ordinary people and first-tier ability users, while the inner city is reserved for second-tier ability users and above, as well as the base’s higher-ups.”
At this point, she winked mysteriously and lowered her voice, “And the inner city has dedicated supplies, with even hot water available 24/7.”
Meng Qinghe played along, showing an expression of longing. “So, where do you live?”
“Of course, I live in the inner city!”
Lin Qunjing lifted her chin proudly.
Children her age were naturally guileless, and having been overly sheltered, she had never experienced the harshness of the apocalypse and didn’t know how to rein in her pride.
Meng Qinghe and Chi Yingdong exchanged a glance.
It seemed they had stumbled upon someone from the inner city by chance.
