- Chapter 31 - We’re Publicly a Married Couple Now
“We’re here.”
Lin Qunjing stopped in front of a grayish-white self-built house and turned to look at Chi Yingdong and Meng Qinghe behind her.
“This is the city entry testing center.”
She briefly explained, “Everyone entering the city must undergo inspection to confirm whether they’re infected, while also testing their ability level to facilitate subsequent resource and task allocation.”
After speaking, she walked straight toward the entrance.
The guards at the door were clearly familiar with her, and as they opened the door, they exchanged a few hushed words.
Meng Qinghe tilted her head slightly to listen.
“Are both of them ability users?”
“No, only one is.”
“…”
She didn’t gain any useful information.
She followed Lin Qunjing inside.
The interior space wasn’t large, divided into several sections.
It was small but fully equipped.
Lin Qunjing led them to cut in line, pushing back a squad that had just returned from a resource-gathering mission outside.
Every member of the squad was covered in dust, their faces etched with exhaustion.
Though pushed back, they only exchanged dissatisfied glances, with no one voicing a protest.
It seemed Lin Qunjing, or the people behind her, held considerable status within the base.
The medical staff, upon seeing Lin Qunjing, immediately stepped forward to take over.
Lin Qunjing waved goodbye, “I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll take my leave now. Let’s hang out again if we get the chance.”
Watching Lin Qunjing depart, the medical staff said, “Please follow me this way.”
Led by the medical staff, Meng Qinghe and the others arrived at the testing area.
Inside the testing area, a detection pod stood quietly.
The medical staff gestured, “Take off all your clothes, step inside, and stand for ten seconds. The machine will scan your physical condition.”
Chi Yingdong examined the detection pod with interest.
In their previous life, when they migrated north, they had bypassed Shanghai and knew nothing about the city’s situation.
Later, when they reached the capital, the communication systems had completely collapsed, making it even harder to obtain information.
The medical staff asked, “Who’s going first?”
Meng Qinghe glanced at Chi Yingdong and was about to say she would go first when she heard Chi Yingdong volunteer.
“Alright,” the medical staff said before stepping outside to give them space.
Just as Meng Qinghe was about to follow them out, her wrist was abruptly grasped by Chi Yingdong.
“We’re publicly a married couple now.”
She said with a faint, teasing smile, “If you leave, wouldn’t that expose us?”
Meng Qinghe pressed her lips together, “Then you undress. I’ll turn around and definitely not peek.”
“Tch.”
A soft, derisive sound.
Meng Qinghe heard it.
She snapped her head up, her eyes demanding an explanation.
Chi Yingdong had been pretending nothing happened, but under Meng Qinghe’s intense stare, her red lips parted slightly, silently forming a few words.
Meng Qinghe stared at her lips, her brow furrowing deeper.
“Coward?”
“Little coward?”
“Cowardly little thing?” Meng Qinghe voiced the words aloud, her eyes widening slightly in irritation as she looked at Chi Yingdong for confirmation.
The other woman curled her lips into a smirk, cast her a careless glance, and raised her hands to remove her black T-shirt.
So sudden!
Face to face!
Meng Qinghe froze.
In the sweltering heat, Chi Yingdong had been dressed lightly.
In the blink of an eye, Meng Qinghe’s vision was filled with an expanse of porcelain-white skin.
Sleek shoulder and neck lines, full breasts, and a slender waist.
Chi Yingdong held the T-shirt in one hand while the other reached behind her back, her fingertips lightly flicking open the clasp of her bra.
The black shoulder strap slipped down, the stark contrast between black and white making Meng Qinghe’s ears burn.
She hastily turned her back, staring fixedly at her own toes.
The rustling sound of fabric rubbing against itself amplified endlessly behind her.
In her daze, she thought she heard Chi Yingdong calling her, but couldn’t make out the words.
“What did you say?” Meng Qinghe asked stiffly.
Chi Yingdong’s voice carried obvious amusement as she repeated, “I said, help me get my clothes.”
“Okay.” Meng Qinghe closed her eyes and groped backward two steps.
She could feel Chi Yingdong’s gaze on her, teasing.
Fortunately, the other didn’t tease her further, simply stuffing the clothes into her hand.
The humming sound of the metal pod starting up echoed.
Meng Qinghe secretly opened her eyes, looking down at the clothes in her hand.
The fabric still retained Chi Yingdong’s body warmth, wrapping around her skin like warm water.
Just as the medical staff had said, the test was quick, only ten seconds.
Meng Qinghe heard the sound of the detection pod door opening.
Then came familiar footsteps.
Meng Qinghe closed her eyes like the proverbial ostrich burying its head in the sand.
She felt Chi Yingdong stop beside her and take the clothes.
With the weight gone from her hands, Meng Qinghe felt something empty out in her heart too.
“Your turn.” Chi Yingdong patted Meng Qinghe’s shoulder. “Let’s finish quickly so we can find accommodation.”
Meng Qinghe opened her eyes, her gaze immediately dodging away when it met Chi Yingdong’s.
“Turn around,” she muttered.
“Hmm? What did you say?”
Chi Yingdong pretended not to hear.
“I said!” Meng Qinghe raised her voice, “Turn around!”
Chi Yingdong looked down at Meng Qinghe’s flushed face and finally couldn’t hold back her laughter: “Alright, little princess Qingqing.”
She slowly turned her back.
Meng Qinghe quickly took off her clothes and thrust them into Chi Yingdong’s hand.
In three quick steps, she entered the testing pod.
The cold metal walls pressed against her heated skin, gradually calming her down.
Ten seconds later, the pod door opened.
Emerging from the detection pod, she saw Chi Yingdong still standing with her back turned, posture straight as a pine tree.
A faint, indescribable disappointment suddenly stirred in Meng Qinghe’s heart.
She looked down at her own figure.
Smack!
She slapped her own forehead.
Was she crazy?!
Her brain must have been infected with a virus, what was she thinking?!
How could she have such thoughts!
Actually considering using her body to win favor!
Taking a deep breath, Meng Qinghe forced herself to calm down.
She retrieved her clothes and put them on one by one, her fingertips still trembling slightly.
After a moment, Chi Yingdong, estimating that Meng Qinghe was dressed, asked with a hint of teasing, “Can I open my eyes now?”
Meng Qinghe felt her freshly cooled face heat up again. “Yes.”
Chi Yingdong opened her eyes, and the two walked out of the testing room.
At the door, medical staff were returning with their test reports. “Both of your physical indicators are normal. This way for the ability level test.”
Watching Chi Yingdong follow the medical staff to another room, Meng Qinghe finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She pressed her hand against her chest, feeling the disobedient heart still beating violently inside.
She gently bit her lower lip.
This was really too improper!
