- Chapter 30.1 - My Wife, We’re Together
The floodwaters receded quickly.
Compared to two days ago, the water level had dropped by two-thirds.
The elevated walkways between buildings had been repurposed by Qian Ruanruan into seedling cultivation areas.
This small space was divided into several sections, each dedicated to cultivating different varieties of crops.
A few wood-element ability users were busy accelerating the growth of the seedlings, while several elderly individuals carefully watered the sprouts in foam boxes.
Although the environment was modest, everyone carried out their tasks in an orderly manner.
Even the elderly without special abilities were contributing to the rebirth of Rong City.
Their movements were gentle, treating the seedlings as if they were precious treasures.
When Chi Yingdong found Xu Luo, she was bending over, her fingertips lightly brushing against a tender sprout.
The sprout trembled slightly under her touch, as if silently responding.
Rong City now housed many small factions.
Some were organized by residential communities, others by individual buildings.
Over the past two days, Xu Luo had tirelessly traveled between various survivor alliances, persuading them to join the city cleanup plan.
Only by having everyone take responsibility for cleaning their own areas could efficiency improve, giving this devastated city a chance at renewal.
The high-intensity work had left Xu Luo’s voice hoarse, and the current tranquility was a rare respite for her.
Chi Yingdong watched the tiny sprout in amazement.
The progress in this lifetime was far better than in her previous one. In her past life, no one had even begun planting by the time she died.
Food is the foundation of the people.
For sustainable development, agriculture was actually the most critical.
Qian Ruanruan had ideas and the courage to implement them. Perhaps they could truly rebuild their home.
Xu Luo was surprised to see Chi Yingdong. “Why are you here?”
Chi Yingdong replied, “I’m leaving Rong City. Do you want to come with me?”
The news of Chi Yingdong’s departure struck Xu Luo like a sudden clap of thunder, leaving her stunned.
Standing in the cultivation area, the joy she had felt earlier upon seeing the sprouting seeds vanished completely.
“I…”
Her heart was conflicted.
She truly couldn’t bear to leave Rong City.
First, she was familiar with the place, and her life here was stable.
Second, she had been part of all the recent changes and couldn’t bring herself to abandon them.
But she had promised Chi Yingdong that she would work for her.
Sensing Xu Luo’s inner struggle, Chi Yingdong said, “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”
Her voice was soft but clear as it reached Xu Luo’s ears. “If you want to stay in Rong City, work with Qian Ruanruan to rebuild it. After all, this is my home too.”
Xu Luo’s throat tightened, feeling dry and bitter.
After a long moment, she said, “Okay.”
She hadn’t spent much time with Chi Yingdong, and though the other woman seemed aloof, Xu Luo could sense the warmth within her.
…
The night was far more comfortable than the day.
Due to the persistent high temperatures, most people had adjusted their schedules, becoming active at night and resting during the day.
Looking down from above, the flashlights shining on the water’s surface resembled scattered stars in the sky.
Meng Qinghe looked up at the rescue helicopter hovering in the air.
The helicopter’s door slowly opened, and a ladder descended before them.
She had anticipated a fierce battle to intercept the helicopter tonight but never expected it to stop directly above them.
“Let’s go.”
Chi Yingdong took Meng Qinghe’s hand, and together, they climbed the rescue ladder amid the deafening roar of the engines.
Approaching the cabin door, Meng Qinghe noticed the bright red national flag emblem on the aircraft, this was actually a state-level rescue plane.
The armed soldier at the doorway showed no change in expression as he pulled them aboard.
Standing inside the plane, Meng Qinghe still felt it was unreal.
“Are we really boarding just like that?”
Her voice was drowned out by the sound of the cabin door closing.
As the plane took off again, trembling slightly, Meng Qinghe instinctively tightened her grip on Chi Yingdong’s wrist.
Chi Yingdong glanced back at her, finding the girl’s startled appearance utterly adorable.
She suddenly leaned in, her warm breath brushing past Meng Qinghe’s ear. “Hard to believe?”
Her tone carried the familiar teasing lilt, as if coaxing a kitten.
Meng Qinghe nodded obediently.
“Want to know why?”
Chi Yingdong suddenly crooked a finger, gesturing for her to come closer.
The gesture instantly reminded Meng Qinghe of the morning two days prior.
She had always thought she slept properly, but upon waking, she found herself completely entangled with Chi Yingdong, her arms wrapped around her neck, her knee pressing against her waist, and her nose almost touching her collarbone.
In that moment, she could clearly feel the rise and fall of the other’s chest.
Panicked, she scrambled to sit up, ready to apologize for the intrusion.
But Chi Yingdong, half-asleep, simply crooked a finger, coaxing her closer, and pulled her back to sleep.
“Ahem.”
The soldier at the cabin door coughed twice deliberately.
Meng Qinghe snapped back to reality, her ears burning as she turned her face away. “Let’s find a seat first.”
The cabin was stiflingly hot, like a steamer.
To maximize passenger capacity, all seats had been removed, and people were crammed onto the floor like sardines.
Sensing someone watching them, Chi Yingdong looked back.
The woman happened to lower her head, but Chi Yingdong caught a glimpse of surprise in her eyes.
She wasn’t sure what had startled the woman, their overly clean clothes or their composed demeanor.
Her gaze lingered on the woman for a few seconds.
She saw the woman bury her head, clutching a bundle tightly in her arms as if afraid someone might take it.
Chi Yingdong quietly averted her eyes.
Meng Qinghe scanned the cabin and pulled Chi Yingdong toward an empty spot.
She took a few clean tissues from her backpack, laid them on the floor, and tugged Chi Yingdong down to sit.
The plane flew steadily.
Inside the vast cabin, a foul odor assaulted Meng Qinghe’s nostrils.
She couldn’t quite describe the stench, a mix of sweat, decay, and fuel.
Meng Qinghe subtly leaned closer to Chi Yingdong, resting her forehead against her shoulder blade.
The fragrance from Chi Yingdong’s body dispelled the unpleasant smell, allowing her to relax.
“Bear with it a little longer,” Chi Yingdong patted the back of Meng Qinghe’s hand, her voice carrying a soothing magic. “We’ll be there soon.”
“Mhm,” Meng Qinghe responded softly, pressing even closer.
The distance from Rong City to Hu City wasn’t too far.
The flight would take about an hour and a half.
Meng Qinghe found it surprisingly easy to doze off leaning against Chi Yingdong, drifting in and out of sleep.
Out of the corner of her eye, Chi Yingdong noticed the woman who had been watching them earlier was staring again.
This time, she didn’t look back directly but let the woman observe.
Time passed quickly, and an hour and a half slipped by unnoticed.
Feeling the plane gradually descending, Chi Yingdong gently woke Meng Qinghe. “Wake up, we’ve arrived.”
Meng Qinghe stirred awake and looked out the window, noticing the plane drawing closer to the ground.
She could almost cheer aloud at the thought of finally escaping this foul-smelling space.
The plane landed smoothly.
As the cabin door opened, passengers began disembarking one by one.
It was only when leaving the aircraft that Chi Yingdong finally looked at the woman’s face.
Large stains covered her features, making them indistinct, but a band-aid was stuck on her brow, whether covering an injury or deliberately concealing something remained unclear. The woman’s face was almost entirely covered, leaving only her eyes exposed.
Yet those eyes alone were enough to tell she was beautiful.
