- Chapter 29 - Lips with a Cupid's Bow Are the Best to Kiss
Chi Yingdong bent her knee and quickly glanced at the so-called injury.
Though the area was red and would likely bruise later, since the skin wasn’t broken, it wasn’t a big issue.
Meng Qinghe looked up.
Only then did Chi Yingdong notice the tears welling in her eyes.
She couldn’t help but chuckle softly, reaching out to wipe the teardrops from the corners of Meng Qinghe’s eyes.
“Even I, the ‘injured one,’ haven’t cried. Why are you crying first?”
Chi Yingdong had secretly practiced how to smile the night before, feeling as though she spent all day wearing a stern expression.
Little did she know that in front of the kitten, she had already smiled many times, though those smiles were always fleeting.
Meng Qinghe answered without hesitation, “My heart aches for you.”
This reply caught Chi Yingdong off guard.
After her mother and mum passed away in the plane crash, everyone had pitied her, looking at her with sympathetic eyes.
They whispered about how a girl who had just come of age would have to face a pack of wolves, wondering if she could protect her family’s wealth.
But no one truly felt heartache for her, for losing the shelter of her dearest ones.
Chi Yingdong’s throat tightened, and she softly promised, “Then I’ll be more careful from now on, so you won’t have to ache for me.”
“Okay.” Meng Qinghe’s tears turned to a smile as she nodded vigorously.
The floor was a mess and couldn’t be left unattended. Meng Qinghe stood up. “I’ll go get the dustpan to clean up.”
“Wait.” Chi Yingdong grabbed Meng Qinghe’s wrist and pulled her back onto the sofa.
Her gaze fell on the girl’s slender ankles. “There are still shards of porcelain on the floor. You’re not wearing shoes, stay seated. I’ll handle it.”
With that, Chi Yingdong stood up to fetch the cleaning tools, leaving Meng Qinghe sitting dazedly on the sofa, looking down at her bare feet.
Kittens don’t need to wear shoes. Having been a cat for so long, she had grown accustomed to going barefoot.
Yet, Chi Yingdong had noticed something even Meng Qinghe herself hadn’t been aware of.
Meng Qinghe curled her toes, her emotions in turmoil.
Chi Yingdong soon returned with a broom and dustpan, swiftly cleaning up the broken porcelain and noodles from the floor.
Meng Qinghe rested her chin in her hands and watched her.
Suddenly, she found Chi Yingdong especially attractive while focused on housework, truly embodying the saying that people doing chores are the most captivating.
She noticed that Chi Yingdong’s eyelashes were long and curled.
Most importantly, Chi Yingdong had a Cupid’s bow!
What was it they said online?
Meng Qinghe tried hard to recall, it seemed that people with a Cupid’s bow have the best lips to kiss.
After cleaning the floor, Chi Yingdong cooked another bowl of noodles.
This time, she brought it directly to the coffee table, ensuring no further accidents would occur.
Meng Qinghe eagerly picked up the soft-boiled egg with her chopsticks and took a bite. The golden egg yolk flowed into her mouth, and she squinted with satisfaction.
She sighed, “Finally, I get to eat it!”
Chi Yingdong watched her childlike eating demeanor, the corners of her lips unconsciously lifting. “Eat slowly. No one’s going to steal it from you.”
Meng Qinghe, her mouth full of noodles, mumbled, “It’s really delicious! A thousand times better than cat food!”
Chi Yingdong propped her cheek on one hand. “As long as you like it.”
After finishing the noodles, Meng Qinghe took the initiative to clear the bowls and chopsticks.
When she returned from the kitchen, she suddenly realized something and nervously rubbed her bare feet against the floor.
“What’s wrong?”
Chi Yingdong asked gently.
Meng Qinghe murmured, “Where will I sleep tonight?”
Chi Yingdong glanced around.
This apartment had three bedrooms. One was where she slept, one had been converted into a walk-in closet, and the other was used for storing miscellaneous items. It really seemed like there was no extra room for Meng Qinghe to sleep in.
Chi Yingdong cleared her throat lightly. “Seems like there’s no room for you to sleep.”
“Huh?” Meng Qinghe didn’t believe it, thinking Chi Yingdong was teasing her, and boldly retorted, “If there’s no room for me to sleep, then I’ll have to sleep in your room.”
Her intention was just to be stubborn.
Unexpectedly.
Chi Yingdong nodded in agreement. “Alright. You can sleep with me tonight.”
Meng Qinghe: ???
That wasn’t what she meant!
“We won’t be staying here for long,” Chi Yingdong explained. “Even if we clean up a room now, we’d only use it for a few days.”
Then she added, “Besides, we’ve slept together before anyway.”
Her reasoning was so sound it was impossible to refute.
“Oh, I see,” Meng Qinghe said, her eyes darting around nervously. “Alright then.”
Chi Yingdong feigned regret. “You don’t sound very willing. I guess I’ll just have to put in the effort and clean up a room for you.”
“I am willing!”
Meng Qinghe hurriedly denied, completely unaware that she had fallen right into the trap set by the other.
A flicker of triumphant amusement flashed in Chi Yingdong’s eyes. “Since you’re willing, it’s settled then.”
Meow meow meow?!
Meng Qinghe quickly changed the subject. “By the way, what did you mean when you said we won’t be staying here for long?”
Chi Yingdong replied, “Because we’re heading north soon.”
She had promised the Ant Queen to find the world’s fissure.
However, she had no clues about the world’s fissure and could only rely on Qiao Ying to see if she could find any leads. That was why they had to go north.
Heading north?
Meng Qinghe’s heart tightened.
According to the original plot, it was during the journey north that Chi Yingdong and Qiao Ying would meet the female lead, Ye Rourou.
Could it be that supporting characters were truly destined to follow the plot?
Meng Qinghe cautiously asked, “When are we leaving?”
Chi Yingdong: “In three days.”
As if guessing Meng Qinghe would ask why it was three days later.
Chi Yingdong explained first, “In three days, a rescue team will pass through Rong City on their way to Hu City. We’ll hitch a ride on their plane then.”
Meng Qinghe still had doubts. “Are we bringing Xu Luo and the others? There are so many people in Rong City, will we even be able to get on the plane?”
“It depends on whether Xu Luo and the others want to go. Not many people will want to leave Rong City.”
“As for whether we can get on the plane, that’s not something a little kitten like you needs to worry about. I have a way.”
Chi Yingdong answered each question one by one, her eyes confident, clearly having made thorough plans.
Seeing Chi Yingdong’s self-assured expression, Meng Qinghe felt some of her worries fade away.
She asked, “Why wouldn’t many people want to leave Rong City?”
With the weather getting hotter and food shortages, if there really was a rescue team, Meng Qinghe didn’t think anyone would pass up the chance to leave Rong City.
Even if the situation outside was the same as in Rong City, as the nation’s capital, people would always feel it was different.
Chi Yingdong said, “Look outside.”
Look outside at what?
Meng Qinghe padded barefoot to the window and pulled back a corner of the curtain.
It was scorching hot outside, the kind of heat where just seeing the sunlight through the window made one feel restless. Yet, many people were still busy on the flooded streets.
Some were fishing things out of the water, while others were sorting what had been caught.
Trash was being buried, fish and shrimp were being dried, and zombie corpses were being collectively burned by fire-ability users.
What they were doing might seem insignificant to Rong City.
But their goal was simply to bring a glimmer of hope to this city and preserve their homeland as much as possible.
“Are they all people unwilling to leave this place?”
Chi Yingdong walked up behind her, her warm palm resting on her shoulder. “For most, this place is their roots. Leaving their hometown will always be the last resort, born of helplessness.”
She sighed. “We haven’t reached that point yet. Besides, the people of Rong City have always believed in themselves, not in fate.”
Meng Qinghe turned around, her nose almost brushing against Chi Yingdong’s chin.
Only then did she realize how close they were, close enough to see the fine hairs on her skin.
Meng Qinghe subtly took a step back, creating some distance, and said stiffly, “Do you also believe only in yourself and not in fate?”
Chi Yingdong: “Mm.”
