- Chapter 2 - Young Master Xu Invites You to a Birthday Party
As soon as Song Zhi walked out of the hospital, the phone in her pocket buzzed. The caller ID read. The Dead Old Man.
Song Zhi recalled her memories and guessed that this person must be Song Zhi’s father.
Although the original owner of this body was vicious, she actually had a very warm family with parents and an older brother who loved her deeply. Growing up, as long as it was something she wanted, her family would help her get it. If she didn’t get her way, she would throw massive tantrums, making a scene and throwing the household into chaos.
Over time, her personality became increasingly arrogant and rebellious. The moment her family didn’t cater to her, she would fly into a rage, smashing things and throwing everything she could see off the tables and onto the floor. She had even pointed at her parents’ faces multiple times, cursing them for being useless.
When her brother, Song Xian, heard this, his face darkened. He walked up and slapped her hard across the face.
Song Zhi was stunned by the slap. She collapsed onto the floor, clutching her face, and began to wail.
Song Mother could least bear to see her daughter cry. With tears welling up in her eyes, she yelled at her son in heartbreak, “Why did you hit her so hard? She is your sister! Can’t you talk things through nicely?”
Song Xian sneered, left a sentence. “Just keep spoiling her like this then” and slammed the door, never looking back.
…In short, the family’s love for her was an almost blind, unconditional indulgence.
In the original novel, after Song Zhi died, her parents’ business completely collapsed. The couple argued constantly, and eventually, the mother fell into a deep depression, crying every day while holding Song Zhi’s photo. The father spent his days sitting on the sofa, heavily chain smoking. Her young brother’s hair turned white overnight, and a perfectly good home completely disintegrated.
Song Zhi hesitated for a few seconds before finally answering the phone. “…Hello?”
“Song Zhi! Get your back here right now! You are completely out of control. How could you push someone down the stairs and then frame them for it? I am so disappointed in you! No matter what, get your ass back here. Otherwise, don’t ever come back to this house! And don’t call me your father anymore!”
On the other end of the line, Father Song was furious.
Song Zhi listened quietly until he finished, then agreed. “Okay.”
The other side fell into dead silence.
Father Song thought he was hallucinating. He asked, “…What did you say?”
Softening her tone, Song Zhi continued, “I will come back. I’m sorry, Dad. I know I did a bad thing this time.”
There was another long silence on the phone. Lately, his relationship with his daughter had hit freezing point. He couldn’t understand why the sweet and innocent girl from his memories had turned into this cold, disappointing stranger. He had fully expected Song Zhi to mock him sarcastically and hang up, or just block his number directly. Who would have thought she would actually apologize?
Father Song began to wonder if he had been too harsh just now. His voice softened significantly. “Just come home quickly. Your mother misses you very much.”
After hanging up, Song Zhi took a taxi back to the Song residence.
Before entering the door, she felt inexplicably nervous.
She had grown up as an orphan in a foster home, a place filled with schemes, coldness, and neglect. When she was young, she had fantasized countless times about how wonderful it would be to have parents, to have a home. If someone was willing to adopt her and give her a family, she would definitely be the most filial daughter.
But despite the many adoptive parents coming and going through the orphanage, no one had ever picked her.
Now, by a bizarre twist of fate, she actually had parents and such a loving pair at that.
Song Zhi clenched her fists, took a deep breath in secret, and opened the door.
Sitting on the sofa in the middle of the living room was a gentle looking woman. This must be her mother, Tan Yingying.
When Tan Yingying saw Song Zhi return, her eyes instantly turned red. She rushed forward wanting to hug her daughter, but after opening her arms slightly, she seemed to remember something and lowered them despondently.
To her surprise, in the next second, the daughter who hadn’t wanted to be close to her for a long time actually pounced into her arms and hugged her tight.
Song Zhi’s voice was muffled. “Mom, I’m sorry. I’ve made you worry so much lately.”
“I’ve thought things through. I won’t like Fu Nian anymore.”
She kept the second half of that sentence to herself because she had fallen for Fu Nian’s “White Moonlight” instead.
Hearing this, Mother Song’s tears kept falling. She kept saying “Good, good,” while turning her head away to wipe her tears. She couldn’t help but think that ever since Song Zhi’s personality drastically changed during childhood, she had never embraced her like this or called her “Mom” again.
Song Zhi poked her head out from her mother’s embrace, looked around, noticed someone was missing, and asked, “Where’s Dad? Is he still angry with me?”
Tan Yingying smiled. “Of course not. Your dad’s anger melted away long ago. Just now he was nagging about you coming back and told Auntie Wang to cook all your favorite dishes.”
As they were talking, a sound came from upstairs. Song Tao was walking down.
He looked at Song Zhi, quietly sizing her up. Only after confirming that she was truly unhurt did he let out a sigh of relief. Knowing that Song Zhi had suddenly fainted and tumbled down the stairs yesterday had scared him out of his wits.
He was happy his daughter was back, but he still maintained a stern front. “You’re back?”
Song Zhi looked at him and gave a soft “Mm.”
It wasn’t that she found Song Tao intimidating, but rather that she felt an instant sense of familiarity the moment she laid eyes on him, just like she did with Tan Yingying. She wasn’t usually someone who liked physical contact, but her instinctive reaction upon seeing Tan Yingying was to throw herself into her arms.
Song Tao nodded. “Let’s eat.”
For the first time in years, the family of three didn’t argue or snap at each other. No one slammed their bowl down halfway through the meal. Instead, they sat together, peaceful and harmonious.
Tan Yingying was overjoyed today. She chatted and laughed throughout dinner, constantly piling food onto Song Zhi’s plate.
Song Tao remained quiet for a long time before he slowly spoke up. “Xiao Zhi, have you run into some trouble recently that you need Dad to resolve?”
He put it very tactfully, but Tan Yingying understood his implication instantly. She shot him a warning glare, signaling him not to ruin the atmosphere.
Song Zhi put down her chopsticks. She knew her sudden change would make her parents think she wanted something from them, so she said, “No, Dad. I’ve just had a change of heart. I suddenly realized today that I don’t actually like Fu Nian. Compared to you two, he is completely insignificant. I was too willful before and said a lot of hurtful words.”
She apologized sincerely. “…I’m sorry.”
Her apology caused Tan Yingying to look away to hide her emotion.
Song Tao nodded, keeping silent, though the rims of his eyes were a bit red. “It’s fine. Your mother and I never held it against you.”
After a moment of deliberation, Song Tao still decided to speak. “Tomorrow is the Xu family’s youngest master’s 19th birthday, he…”
Tan Yingying suddenly kicked his foot under the table and glared at him fiercely. Song Tao was forced to shut his mouth.
The moment Song Zhi heard “the Xu family,” her interest was piqued. The Xu family meant there was a chance she would see Xu You.
She quickly probed, “What about him?”
Song Tao glanced at her, braving Tan Yingying’s death stare, and said, “He invited you to his birthday gala.”
Xu You had just been hospitalized because of Song Zhi’s framing, yet Xu Nian was still inviting Song Zhi to his birthday banquet. It was clearly a trap, a hostile setup. This was exactly why Tan Yingying hadn’t wanted Song Tao to mention it, she was worried her daughter would be bullied if she went.
Without a second thought, Song Zhi agreed immediately. “Okay, I’ll go.”
“Xiao Zhi.”
Tan Yingying raised her voice, her brow furrowing with deep worry.
Looking at her, Song Zhi understood her mother’s concerns. She said softly, “Mom, I’ve done a lot of wrong things, and I really do owe Xu You an apology. Don’t worry, even if they try to do something, it’s just my deserved punishment.”
After dinner, Song Zhi spent some time chatting with Tan Yingying before heading upstairs to rest.
She unlocked her phone, first deleting all the messy apps and photos, then purging most of the toxic acquaintances and fair weather friends from her contacts list. Finally, she lay on her bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Xu You…
That pale, exquisite face suddenly floated into her mind, and her heart involuntarily skipped a beat again.
In reality, she had only ever had a vague concept of romance. It wasn’t until college that she realized she liked girls, but she had never found anyone who truly made her heart race over all these years.
It wasn’t until today that Song Zhi understood why cheesy idol dramas portrayed love at first sight so dramatically, because your heart really does pound like a drum, throwing your entire world out of rhythm. Even now, just thinking about Xu You’s slightly smiling eyes and her delicate face made her pulse accelerate.
So this is what a crush feels like…
Song Zhi buried her face in her pillow, giggling to herself as she thought about it.
Outside the door, Song Tao and Tan Yingying, who were eavesdropping, finally breathed a sigh of relief. The couple looked at each other and nodded in unison. It seemed their daughter hadn’t come home because she suffered some terrible breakdown.
Having confirmed this, they completely set their minds at ease and quietly walked back to their own bedroom.
Inside the room, Song Zhi was still replaying her first meeting with Xu You, her mind drifting through a haze of pink romantic bubbles. Suddenly, she remembered something. The bubbles popped violently in her head, and her heart instantly turned ice-cold.
Ahhh! Oh my god!
How could she forget the plot?!
How could she forget such a crucial detail!
Song Zhi practically wanted to pinch herself to stay conscious.
Thinking about the original plot of the book gave her a massive, despairing headache.
Think about it: the original host had done so many horrific things to Xu You, trying to frame her time and time again. How could Xu You ever accept it if her arch-nemesis, who used to hate her guts and want her dead, suddenly showed up and said, “Xu You! I like you!”?
She would absolutely think it was just some twisted new prank Song Zhi had cooked up to torment her, and she would only end up hating her more.
What should I do? Is it too late to fake amnesia?
Song Zhi instantly lost confidence in her newly budding love.
But in the next second, a tiny spark of hope flared up again!
How will I know if I don’t try!
Song Zhi had never been one to give up easily. Growing up, the opportunities handed to her had been few and far between. Every single time she had a chance to crawl out of the mud, she would push herself to the absolute limit to grab it. The person she liked would be no exception.
Xu You’s life is already so tragic. If I, Song Zhi, don’t treat her well, who else in this world is going to care about her? Who’s going to love her? That “strong” chauvinistic male lead?!
And looking at it from another angle, since she had so many scripted plotlines to frame Xu You, didn’t that mean she had even more excuses to get close to her?
In a twisted sense, wasn’t this a perfect example of using a geographic advantage to secure the prize first?!
Xu You, wait for me!
A reformed Song Zhi is on her way!
