- Chapter 1 - Oh No, I’ve Fallen for the Heroine
When Song Zhi woke up, her head was a dizzy, foggy mess. The moment she opened her eyes, she found herself locked in a staring contest with someone.
The man was dressed in a sharp suit and leather shoes, looking down at her with a dark, brooding expression. His gaze looked sharp enough to tear her to pieces. “I remember telling you not to hurt her.”
Song Zhi blanked out. Wait, what? Who the hell are you, dude? Do I even know you?
And who exactly did I hurt?
In the very next second, a tidal wave of unfamiliar memories forced its way into her brain.
The sheer pain made her clutch her head, curling up helplessly on the hospital bed.
Seeing her like this, the man assumed it was just a cheap tactic she was faking to avoid the issue. He let out a cold sneer and stood up. “This is your final warning. If you lay another hand on Xu You, neither you nor your family will survive this.”
With that threat hanging in the air, he turned on his heel and stropt out.
By the time she finally gathered her wits, Song Zhi’s hospital gown was completely drenched in cold sweat.
Her face was deathly pale as she opened her eyes, her emotions tangled in a complicated knot.
She realized she had transmigrated into a book. Worse, she was now the crazed, malicious female second lead in a dog blood, angst heavy web novel. In the original plot, this character was so maddeningly obsessed with the male lead that she wanted to slaughter anyone who even breathed near him.
She had gone completely off the deep end after discovering that the male lead had a delicate, bedridden white moonlight named Xu You. She had tried to quietly finish the heroine off multiple times, but failed every single time. In the end, she thoroughly enraged the male lead, who threw her into a mental asylum where she was tortured to death.
In short, she was a cannon fodder character whose brain cells had been entirely consumed by love.
But now that Song Zhi had taken over the body, she certainly wasn’t going to follow that path to ruin. The reason was simple, she wasn’t into men.
Since she had been given a second chance at life, her only goal for this lifetime was to live quietly and peacefully. If she happened to meet the right person to settle down with and enjoy a sweet, comfortable little life together, that would be even better.
As for the male lead and female lead, she wanted to stay as far away from them as humanly possible.
She sat up and yanked the IV needle out of the back of her hand.
Based on the male lead’s dialogue, she deduced that the plot had already reached its mid-point. This was right around the time when the petty cannon fodder discovered the existence of the white moonlight and was exhausting every scheme to kill her.
Evidently, she hadn’t succeeded this time either, she had faked an illness to get admitted to the hospital, only to be subjected to a harsh scolding anyway.
Song Zhi walked into the bathroom. Looking into the mirror, she realized the face looking back was identical to her original appearance, though the features of this beautiful woman were slightly sharper and more striking.
She didn’t plan on lingering here. She was still entirely unfamiliar with this world and needed to go out to observe it. More importantly, to keep her little life intact, she had to stay away from the main leads.
Absolutely, positively stay away!!!
Song Zhi felt like she couldn’t stay in this hospital for another second. Who knew if that toxic, edgy guy would suddenly loop back?
Time was ticking, so it was best to slip away immediately!
She looked down at her hospital gown and fell into deep thought.
If she walked out dressed like this, wouldn’t people mistake her for an escaped mental patient? It was way too eye catching. No, that wouldn’t do.
Song Zhi circled the room and breathed a sigh of relief.
Thank goodness, the original owner’s clothes were actually still left in the room!
She swiftly stripped off the hospital gown, changed into her regular clothes, and picked up her phone.
The original owner’s phone had been turned off. The moment it powered up, it buzzed and vibrated relentlessly in her hand.
It was flooded with a chaotic mess of notifications, beauty salons, luxury brand personal shoppers, and messages from various socialite friends.
Opening WeChat, she immediately spotted the pinned chat at the very top. “Fu Nian Gege.”
Ugh, gross.
Fu Nian, the male lead of this novel, and the exact “strong alpha male” archetype who had just been acting tough in her room.
The word Gege made her skin crawl with goosebumps.
Without the slightest hesitation, Song Zhi deleted him.
Since she had decided to have absolutely zero involvement with the main leads in this life, she was going to sever ties completely and cleanly.
After changing, Song Zhi, who wasn’t used to the original owner’s sky-high stilettos, gingerly made her way out of the ward. She scanned her surroundings, trying to navigate her way toward the exit in confusion.
Suddenly, she caught the sound of an argument coming from the stairwell.
“Sister, why are you still refusing the engagement? Don’t you know our family business has been tanking lately? We’re barely surviving!”
The young man’s voice was sharp with urgency, and his words instantly made Song Zhi’s blood boil. She frowned, pausing her steps to listen quietly.
“Besides, you were born a walking medicine jar and you don’t know how to do anything. Isn’t it your absolute honor to be noticed by a man like him? Why won’t you just agree?”
Hearing this was enough for Song Zhi to piece together the situation.
A textbook case of forced marriage!
And what did he mean, “Isn’t it your absolute honor to be noticed by a man like him?”
She absolutely loathed this kind of useless trash who sold out their own sister for personal gain.
“What kind of special day is it today? How is it that even a lapdog has learned to speak human words?”
Song Zhi intentionally raised her voice, clumsily navigating the corner on her high heels to make her entrance.
“Wow, if you like that wealthy young master so much, why don’t you go chase him yourself? I see you’re quite fair and delicate, who knows, maybe he’s into exactly your type? Go bravely pursue your love, sweetheart.”
Song Zhi delivered her sarcasm with seasoned expertise, but feeling like it wasn’t quite enough, she added, “Or are you trying to pull off some epic forbidden romance with your brother-in-law? Don’t say another word, I get it, I totally get it. Don’t worry, little brother, I’m very familiar with Thailand. Your condition is already twisted enough, it’s really just a matter of a minor surgery.”
After mocking the young boy, she turned her head, intending to offer a few comforting words to the sister.
However, the moment she caught sight of the woman’s face, her heart rate abruptly spun entirely out of control.
The woman was tall and slender, looking quite young. Her long hair fell straight and dark across her shoulders. Her face, pale and smooth as snow, featured incredibly exquisite traits. It should have been a very striking, vivid kind of beauty, but because her eyes were so aloof, it gave her a remarkably detached, ethereal aura.
At this exact moment, she was looking right back at Song Zhi with those calm, beautiful, and completely unreadable eyes.
Thump, thump, thump.
Her chest refused to quiet down.
This was a sensation she had never experienced once in her twenty-plus years of life.
In the next heartbeat, the young boy’s voice cut through the air, laced with a mix of surprise and disgust.
“Song Zhi?”
Song Zhi: ?
What was going on?
He knew her?
“What right do you have to lecture me? Aren’t you just a vain, gold-digging girl who’s entirely bent on climbing the social ladder by clinging to Brother Fu Nian? What are you trying to act like right now? Everyone knows you hate my sister the most, so why are you putting on a show?”
“What? Do you honestly think that by instigating my sister to reject Brother Fu Nian’s proposal, you’ll get a chance with him? Stop dreaming! Don’t forget, the only reason my sister is hospitalized right now is because of you! Don’t think for a second that your little stunt, pushing my sister down the stairs and then faking a faint yourself, was seamless! I’m telling you, Brother Fu Nian knows everything!”
He finished his tirade and waited for Song Zhi to blow her top, fly into a rage, and expose her own clownish nature. Yet, the expected reaction never came. Song Zhi didn’t even spare him a single glance.
Song Zhi was staring fixedly at the woman in front of her. Only now did she notice the white bandage wrapped around the woman’s head.
Sister, engagement, hospital…
Her lips parted slightly. Refusing to accept her grim reality, she asked tentatively, “…Xu You?”
Xu You let out a soft, light cough.
She looked at Song Zhi quietly, a faint, gentle smile touching her eyes as she softly murmured an acknowledgment. “Mm.”
Song Zhi: “!!!”
Damn it, why did her heart just skip another beat!
Song Zhi felt like she couldn’t stay here for another second!
The fact that her love at first sight crush turned out to be the main heroine was a reality she simply couldn’t accept all at once.
Moreover, less than ten minutes ago, she had just firmly established a flag to stay as far away from the leads as possible.
She instinctively took a step back, but before fleeing, she didn’t forget to blurt out to Xu You, “Uh, look, I have some things to take care of, so I’ll be leaving first!”
With that, she immediately whirled around and quickened her pace to get out of there.
Though no matter how one looked at it, her departing figure looked exactly like a panicked retreat.
“Weird, since when did that psycho become so polite?”
The boy looked utterly bewildered. “And she didn’t even get mad at what I said?”
There was one more thing he was too embarrassed to admit out loud, her rebuffs were actually incredibly logical, which was exceptionally rare.
This definitely wasn’t the kind of eloquence that idiot Song Zhi usually possessed.
Xu You didn’t offer him a response. She simply watched Song Zhi’s departing back with a serene expression, her gaze eventually landing on the slightly wobbly stride of Song Zhi’s high heels, her thoughts completely unreadable.
