Chapter 12: A Feeling of a Very Obedient Pupil!
“Haha, alright! There’s an extra bed here, move in and we can make things lively together.”
Someone teased her, knowing she wouldn’t actually move in. Who would want to live in a dormitory when they have a private house? They were more envious than they could say.
Gu Rou smiled sheepishly; she had only been speaking offhand.
While the female youths were laughing and chatting, the male side was a hive of activity.
At this moment, the village chief brought the rations to be distributed to the educated youths.
“Each person gets five catties of corn, five catties of millet, five catties of sweet potatoes, two catties of white flour, and two catties of rice. Everyone, come and collect your share!”
This was the happiest moment for the educated youths, and they came out one after another to receive their food.
As the village chief distributed the rations, he offered a reminder: “This is your ration for one month. After a month, food will be distributed based on work points. You’d better eat sparingly.”
The educated youths were mostly young masters and ladies who had never run a household and didn’t know the cost of living. Never mind how much food one person could eat in a month—they didn’t even know how much money they needed to earn to get by.
To them, this food seemed like a lot; those with smaller appetites even felt it was enough to last them until the end of the year!
On the other side, Gu Rou watched as everyone received food except for the two of them.
She couldn’t help but widen her eyes. “Wait, Sister, why don’t we have any?”
Although she had questions, she didn’t dare ask the village chief who was handing out the grain.
Lin Ning stood to the side and said calmly, “I didn’t want those. I had the village chief exchange mine for one egg-laying hen and five small chicks.”
Gu Rou: “???”
That works too?
Lin Ning glanced at her, seemingly sensing the unasked question. She stated simply, “Why wouldn’t it work? We aren’t short on grain; what we lack is meat.”
Gu Rou swallowed hard and said admiringly, “Sister, you are brilliant!”
Lin Ning withdrew her gaze, wearing an arrogant expression that suggested it was only natural.
However, Gu Rou looked around and asked, “Where are the hen and chicks? The village chief didn’t bring them to us!”
Lin Ning replied, “What’s the rush? The chicken coop at home hasn’t been built yet.”
Gu Rou paused. “Chicken coop?”
What is that?
As a city girl, not only had she never seen one, she found the very term unfamiliar.
Lin Ning turned her eyes toward her. “We’ll build it when we get back. I’ll teach you.”
Gu Rou was confused. “What do I need to learn that for?”
Lin Ning narrowed her eyes. “Don’t worry about it, just learn!”
Gu Rou cowered. “Okay, I’ll learn.”
As the two sisters were talking, Ye Shiyu walked over from the side. “Comrade Lin, Little Comrade Lin, we were all thinking of taking out a bit of our things to cook a meal so we can all eat together. Do you want to join us?”
Hearing this, Gu Rou looked at Lin Ning. She didn’t mind, so she waited to see if her sister-in-law was willing.
Lin Ning thought for a moment and nodded. “Sure, we’ll go back and bring some food over. Are we having lunch or dinner together?”
She asked this only because it was getting late; with so many people at the station, lunch would probably be too late.
Sure enough, Ye Shiyu said, “Dinner. Lunch is too rushed. Everyone will be busy tidying up in the afternoon, so dinner is just right.”
Lin Ning nodded. “Fine, my sister and I will come back in the afternoon.”
After saying this, she took Gu Rou and headed back. As they left the station, Gu Rou politely said goodbye to Ye Shiyu and told her to come over and visit when she had time.
Lin Ning was quite dissatisfied with Gu Rou’s attempt to build rapport with the future sister-in-law while dragging her—the “ex-sister-in-law”—along.
So, after leaving the station, she said to Gu Rou, “When you associate with Comrade Ye, you don’t necessarily have to bring me along.”
To her surprise, Gu Rou completely misunderstood and retorted with absolute certainty: “That won’t do! You are my sister; for me to make a friend, they must pass your assessment.”
How should Lin Ning describe it? It felt a bit like having a very obedient pupil!
So she nodded. “Comrade Ye is quite good; she has passed my assessment.”
Since that was the case, Gu Rou asked, “Since you said Comrade Ye passed the assessment, why don’t you want to be friends with her?”
Lin Ning remained silent!
Gu Rou asked again in a small voice, “Do you dislike Comrade Ye? If you don’t like her, I can stop being friends with her too.”
“No,” Lin Ning spoke up, stating: “It’s just that I don’t like making friends!”
Gu Rou was stunned. She seemed to recall something and then said, “True. Growing up, it seems I was your only friend!”
Lin Ning nodded. “En, having you is enough!”
Gu Rou’s eyes turned red instantly. Moved, she suddenly hugged her. “Waaaah, Sister, I didn’t realize I was so special and important to you!”
Lin Ning thought back to the original plot and her own plans: “…Saying that isn’t wrong!”
Gu Rou: “Waaaaah…” Even more moved!
Lin Ning suddenly felt a wet patch on the front of her clothes and immediately pushed her away in disgust. “Don’t wipe your snot on me.”
Gu Rou was dazed by the push, then processed what she said.
She retorted indignantly, “It’s not snot, it’s tears!”
Lin Ning turned and walked away. “Tears aren’t allowed either!”
All of Gu Rou’s sentimentality vanished. She chased after her. “Why are you running! At a time like this, shouldn’t you be hugging me and crying too? Even if you aren’t moved, you’re actually disgusted by me?”
Lin Ning heard her shouting and chasing from behind, and her pace quickened.
She shouted loudly, “Don’t give me that. Whether you cry or are moved, you must learn how to build the chicken coop today!”
Gu Rou didn’t know why she suddenly brought up the chicken coop again, but her rebellious streak flared up. “I won’t learn. Sister, it’s enough if you know how; I can learn how to raise the chicks.”
“No. Building a coop is a survival skill; you have to learn it.”
Talking and chasing, the two of them arrived home.
Regardless of how Gu Rou protested, Lin Ning took her to build the coop.
“Building a chicken coop is easy. You only need two kinds of materials: wooden sticks and straw pulp.”
“First, prepare enough wooden sticks. Find a spacious spot out of the way and drive the sticks into the soil. Push them in deep so the coop won’t fall over.”
“Build it in the shape of a small house. Once the frame is out, you can weave the straw pulp together and put it on top as a roof.”
“Inside, you can put some wooden shelves or straw nests; those are the nesting boxes.”
“Finally, enclose the outside, and that’s a simple, common chicken coop. Have you learned it?”
She taught while she worked. Finally, she stood up and asked Gu Rou.
Gu Rou watched, stunned, and then asked a question: “Sister, how do you know how to do all this?”
