Chapter 11: The Original Heroine and the Current Heroine Talk in Harmony
The village chief jerked, immediately turned around, wiped the expression off his face, and replaced it with a kind, genial smile: “What is the matter, Comrade Educated Youth?”
Ye Shiyu’s gaze flickered toward Father Gu over there. “Village Chief, how much longer are we going to wait here?”
Father Gu didn’t know this educated youth, but he knew this was an opportunity. He immediately clutched at the village chief again, pleading: “I beg of you, Village Chief, please just let me get a doctor for my son! If he doesn’t see a doctor, he’s really going to die!”
As soon as Father Gu finished speaking, Ye Shiyu asked: “Village Chief, who is he? Why won’t you let him get a doctor for his son?”
Once Ye Shiyu spoke, the other educated youths followed suit:
“That’s right! He said it himself, if he doesn’t get a doctor his son is going to die of illness. Village Chief, you can’t just stand by and watch someone die!”
“Does Da Liu Village treat human life so lightly? If we fall sick later, does that mean we won’t be allowed to see a doctor either?”
The village chief didn’t even have time to speak as he listened to them voice their opinions one after another.
His face turned black. He looked with annoyance at Father Gu for causing him trouble, and then looked with exasperated anger at the “kind-hearted” educated youths!
“He is a member of the ‘Black Five’ living in the cowshed! When his injured son was sent here, he was covered in wounds. We don’t even know how those wounds got there. You think I can just say ‘get a doctor’ and it happens?”
The village chief’s voice rose significantly; he was basically shouting at them.
The chattering educated youths fell silent instantly. They looked at each other, and their previously righteous expressions all turned into evasive ones.
Hearing the village chief say this, Gu Rou’s eyes turned red with anger.
Lin Ning saw her state and frowned. She secretly gave her a tug, signaling her to act normal. Then, she turned her gaze back to Ye Shiyu, wanting to see how she would react.
Ye Shiyu looked at Father Gu without much expression: “No matter who you are, if you want to hire a doctor, use your own money to do it. Why must you trouble the Village Chief? Surely you aren’t expecting the village to pay for your doctor?”
When she finished, Lin Ning, standing behind, smiled. She immediately followed her lead and looked at the village chief with an “I’m on your side” expression: “Village Chief, you absolutely must not agree to this. A member of the ‘Black Five’ in a cowshed thinks he’s some high-ranking city official? If they want a doctor, let them hire one themselves. The village must never set such a precedent.”
After Lin Ning spoke loudly, the other educated youths chimed in: “Right, right! If you want a doctor, hire one yourself. Why should the Village Chief hire one for you?”
“Exactly. If the Village Chief hires one, it uses the village’s money. This ‘Black Five’ really isn’t anything good—he’s quite insidious and cunning!”
Hearing the support, Ye Shiyu continued: “Exactly right. We are educated youths; even if we get sick or have other needs later, we will solve them ourselves. We will absolutely not bring the slightest bit of trouble to the Village Chief or the village.”
“Comrade Ye is right. We are educated youths here to support construction. Even if we get sick or injured later, we’ll go see a doctor ourselves. On what grounds should the village hire a doctor for a ‘Black Five’ like you?” Lin Ning added, picking up right where Ye Shiyu left off.
The two of them talked in perfect harmony. Without anyone noticing, Father Gu’s intention of “hiring a doctor” had been completely distorted. This maneuver was like an improvised act that Father Gu simply couldn’t keep up with!
Ye Shiyu did, however, cast a glance at Lin Ning, pursed her lips, and stopped talking.
Father Gu finally reacted, looking timidly at the village chief. “We… can hire a doctor ourselves?”
The village chief opened his mouth, and then opened it again. It was clear he was quite conflicted. Finally, as if having no other choice, he waved his hand: “Go, go, go! Go to the health station and hire one yourself. Once you’re done, go back to the cowshed and don’t go anywhere else!”
Father Gu couldn’t help but reveal a smile and bowed gratefully: “Thank you, Village Chief. Thank you, Village Chief.”
Then he paused and turned toward the group of educated youths: “Thank you, Educated Youths! Thank you!”
Afterward, Father Gu left with a hunched back and stumbling steps.
This was what Lin Ning had instructed—she said such a retreating figure was likely to evoke sympathy. Once people began to pity them, their future days would be easier!
The old Father Gu would have disdained playing for sympathy; the current Father Gu treated it as a golden rule.
After Father Gu left, the village chief looked at the youths with a forced smile: “Alright, that was just a small interlude. Let’s not let it affect our mood. Everyone, follow me into the village!”
The educated youths composed themselves and followed the village chief.
Lin Ning and Gu Rou went along too. Although they didn’t live at the station, they needed to go help out and build some rapport.
“Rourou, go help Comrade Ye organize.” As soon as they reached the entrance of the station, she assigned a task to Gu Rou.
Gu Rou had a good impression of Ye Shiyu and instinctively nodded, but then looked back at Lin Ning: “What about you, Sister?”
Lin Ning scanned the surroundings: “I’ll help some others.”
But she hadn’t decided who these “others” would be yet.
Gu Rou gave an indifferent “En,” and turned to go to Ye Shiyu’s side: “Comrade Ye, let me help you!”
Ye Shiyu was dragging her quilt. She looked up and smiled: “Thank you, little Comrade Lin.”
Gu Rou paused. Problem identified: She shared the surname Lin with her sister. Her sister was older, so “Big Lin” was her sister, and she was “Little Lin.” Makes sense.
“Comrade Lin, thank you!”
Suddenly, a voice of thanks came from behind. Gu Rou turned to look.
Oh, it was her sister helping another youth.
So, her sister was the Comrade Lin, and she was little Comrade Lin!
Fine!
Gu Rou and Ye Shiyu carried the sack containing the quilt together into the girls’ dormitory.
The station was newly built, but the beds looked second-hand. They were of different heights and sizes. The walls, however, were painted snow-white, and the glass windows were spotless.
Oh, the cabinets were also clearly second-hand—some had peeling paint, and some were missing handles, replaced by pieces of rope.
“Comrade Ye, where do you want to sleep? I’ll help you make the bed first.” Gu Rou looked at the beds; she couldn’t choose a single one of them.
Ye Shiyu looked around, appearing quite troubled. They were all from the city; whose bed back home wasn’t better than this?
“I’d like a spot by the window, but I don’t know where the others have picked?” she said hesitantly, turning to look at the other youths.
The remaining four female youths all looked over. “I want a spot further inside.”
“I want the spot against the wall over here.”
“I like it here. It’s closest to the door, so it’s convenient for me to get up at night.”
“Then I’ll sleep here. It’s next to the cabinet, so it’s easy to put my things.”
With everyone splitting up, the spot by the window was left for Ye Shiyu.
Ye Shiyu bowed gratefully: “Thank you, everyone is taking such good care of me.”
The other youths smiled at her. The oldest among them said: “You’re the youngest of us; of course we should take more care of you.”
Gu Rou watched from the side, deeply moved. Without thinking, she blurted out: “It’s so warm and lively! I almost want to move in here!”
Hearing this, Lin Ning turned her head.
Move in?
Have you forgotten your family’s social standing? Moving to the educated youth station?
