Chapter 13: Little Yellow Peeps, Food That People Like
“What’s so hard about this? You just look and you know how. Don’t tell me you didn’t learn it?” Lin Ning spoke as if it were a matter of course.
Gu Rou nodded hurriedly: “I learned, I learned! It’s so simple, you get it at a glance.”
Having said that, she immediately changed the subject: “Sister, what food are we bringing over tonight?”
Lin Ning thought for a moment: “Bring some eggs?”
There was a hint of a question in her tone, as if seeking Gu Rou’s opinion.
Gu Rou felt that was fine, but had a follow-up question: “How many? Ten?”
Her logic: ten people, ten eggs.
Lin Ning nodded in agreement. “That works.”
Receiving validation, Gu Rou smiled happily, “Then I’ll go get them ready.”
She then skipped away to pack the eggs.
Lin Ning glanced at the freshly finished chicken coop. “It’s still early. Get ready and come with me to ’embrace’ the chicks.”
Gu Rou looked back. “Embrace the chicks? Do we have to pay money?”
She remembered her sister saying that “embracing” meant buying.
But she also remembered that these chicks were exchanged using the grain distributed by the village.
Lin Ning: “No need. This ’embrace’ doesn’t cost money.”
Gu Rou nodded thoughtfully. Rural culture was truly deep and profound!
After the two sisters finished tidying up, they first carried the ten eggs to the educated youth station. The male youths were in the yard sweeping and stacking firewood.
The female youths were in the kitchen scrubbing pots and cleaning up.
When they saw the sisters—especially the bag of eggs—everyone smiled particularly happily.
After all, these were eggs; whether in the countryside or the city, bringing them as a guest was a very decent gift.
Just as Lin Ning and Gu Rou were about to enter the kitchen, a female youth came out to meet them.
“Oh my, don’t come in. It’s too dirty, don’t let the dust get on your clothes.”
Lin Ning and Gu Rou stood at the door. Gu Rou handed over the eggs: “Comrade Huang, this is the food our sisters contributed. For tonight, you can just fry them with some green onions or chili peppers.”
“Good, good, good! I’ll be the head chef tonight and make scrambled eggs with green onions. I guarantee the fragrance will make you all swoon.” Huang Meifang took them, grinning from ear to ear.
Gu Rou nodded, glanced inside, and asked politely: “Do you need help?”
Huang Meifang waved her hand: “No need, no need. We’re almost done. Go tend to your business, and if you’re free, come sit in our dormitory.”
“Oh, then we’re going to the village chief’s house. We’ll be back in a while.” Gu Rou stated their next plan.
Huang Meifang nodded and didn’t ask what they were doing at the village chief’s house. Her eyes were fixed on the eggs; these two sisters were truly generous.
After Lin Ning and Gu Rou left the station, a small stir broke out among the youths.
“What’s the background of those Lin sisters? They look quite well-off.”
“Right? They even rented a house in the village. That must cost quite a bit!”
“They just brought over eggs—looks like about ten of them. We’re in for a treat tonight.”
The two sisters were unaware of the gossip. They arrived at the back of the village chief’s house, where the village chief’s wife was waiting for them.
“Comrade Lin and Little Comrade Lin are here! You’ve come to embrace the chicks, right? My man already told me all about it. Here, take this hen. Don’t look at how small she is; she lays eggs every day!”
“And the chicks are all here. I suggest taking four little hens and one little rooster. The hens can lay eggs later, and once the rooster grows up, you can slaughter it for meat. You choose.”
Lin Ning looked at the chirping chicks in the coop and the hen with her legs tied.
“We’ll listen to you, Auntie. However, we don’t know how to tell the roosters from the hens. We’ll have to trouble you to help us pick.”
She looked at the village chief’s wife, speaking frankly about their difficulty.
There was no helping it; the chicks all looked exactly the same. It wasn’t as easy to distinguish them as it was when they were grown.
The village chief’s wife wasn’t surprised and entered the coop enthusiastically. “Alright, Auntie will pick them for you.”
She then grabbed those golden, fluffy little chicks one by one, inspecting them as she went.
In less than a minute, she had made the selection and thoughtfully provided one of her own baskets to hold them.
“There, just take them back and raise them in the coop. Feed them a bit of wheat bran every day, mixed with water until… just like this one at my house.”
Fearing the two young girls wouldn’t know the proper consistency, she showed them the wheat bran she was currently using to feed her own chicks.
Gu Rou stared with wide, blinking eyes. Lin Ning reached out and touched it, rubbing a bit between her fingertips. “Thank you, Auntie. I understand.”
The village chief’s wife put down the chicken feed with a smile. “Alright, you two head back. I know you have a dinner gathering at the station tonight, so I won’t keep you.”
Lin Ning nodded, clutching the hen’s wings in one hand and carrying the basket in the other. “I’ll return the basket to you tomorrow, Auntie.”
The smile on the wife’s face grew more satisfied. “No rush, no rush!”
As Lin Ning and Gu Rou walked back, Gu Rou’s neck was twisted at a ninety-degree angle like she had a stiff neck, staring intently into the basket.
Lin Ning thrust the basket toward her. “Take it and look.”
A light of surprised joy burst from Gu Rou’s eyes as she hugged the basket. “Wow… ah… little yellow peeps! Why are you so cute!”
Lin Ning turned her head, her voice tinged with bewilderment: “…Little yellow peeps?”
Gu Rou: “So cute, so cute! Oh my, little yellow peeps, how can you be so lovable!”
Lin Ning looked at her, not quite understanding why she liked them so much.
Isn’t this just food?
Well, she liked food too!
Once they were grown and cooked, she would like them even more!
When the two arrived home, the hen and the chicks were placed into the coop.
Perhaps because they were new to the house, the hen was clucking and the chicks were peeping.
It was quite noisy!
But Gu Rou didn’t mind. She squatted by the coop, watching the little yellow peeps inside, even finding the sound crisp and pleasant to the ear.
“Sister, do you think they’ll get hungry?”
Lin Ning: “No, they just ate their fill at the village chief’s house.”
“Sister, should we feed them some wheat bran too?”
Lin Ning: “…!”
“Sister, do you think eating only wheat bran is nutritious enough? Will the chicks fail to grow up?”
Lin Ning finally reached her limit. She grabbed Gu Rou by the collar and hauled her up. “It’s time for us to go to the station to eat.”
Gu Rou was dragged up, looking back with lingering affection.
“Sister, can we take the chicks with us?”
Lin Ning let go of her: “If you don’t mind them turning into food right then and there, go ahead and bring them!”
Gu Rou immediately shook her head. “Not bringing them, not bringing them! Sister, let’s go quickly!”
You see, sometimes, certain matters can be much simpler if you look at them from a different perspective.
