- Chapter 11 - What to Do When My Wife Loves Me Too Much (Part 11)
“Miss Lin grew up in a remote and impoverished mountainous area. Over a decade ago, the region was extremely isolated, there were no roads, and people had to trek over several mountains to reach the village. Some households didn’t even have electricity back then, and children had to cross multiple mountains just to attend school.”
“A TV program took an interest in their poverty and seclusion, bringing a group of rebellious rich kids there to experience life, hoping to reform their spoiled habits.”
“The contrast between the wealthy children and the impoverished ones became the show’s selling point.”
“When the program aired, it caused a huge stir across the country.”
At this point, Sister Zhang couldn’t help but sneak a glance at Bai Jun’s reaction. Seeing that Bai Jun remained composed, she continued, “Every child from the mountains seemed pitiful, but Miss Lin was the most tragic of them all.”
“Her mother, when young, had gone out to work and naively married her father. Only after giving birth to Miss Lin did she realize her father was a hopeless gambler, drowning in debt. That heartless man even tried to use her mother as collateral for his debts.”
“Her mother would rather die than submit she jumped from a building. Though she miraculously survived, she suffered brain damage and was left paralyzed, bedridden for life.”
“Her grandmother took them both back to their hometown. But when Miss Lin was ten, the old woman went into the mountains to gather firewood, fell off a cliff, and was found dead.”
“By the time the program crew arrived, she was already thirteen. No one knew how this young girl had managed to care for her paralyzed mother alone during those three years.”
Sister Zhang’s voice trembled with emotion as she spoke.
Bai Jun’s eyes reddened instantly.
She had imagined Lin Song’s childhood might have been difficult, but she never expected it to be this harsh!
She wished she could travel back in time, to stand beside the young Lin Song, and embrace the lonely, helpless little girl.
Now she understood why Lin Song was so insecure and clung to her affection because Lin Song had never experienced love growing up, even the most ordinary warmth from Bai Jun was treasured like a rare gem.
“What happened next?” Bai Jun wiped her eyes, steadying her emotions before asking.
“After the show aired, Lin Song’s maturity and resilience stood in stark contrast to the ahem, the spoiled rich kid staying with her. Everyone adored this poor but determined girl.”
Sister Zhang glanced at Bai Jun and quickly finished this part.
“After that, life improved for Lin Song. Donations poured in from all over the country.”
“Most people would struggle to resist such wealth, but thirteen-year-old Lin Song refused. She said someone had already sponsored her, and urged people to focus on those who needed help more.”
“The next time the public saw her was during her university years. She originally studied directing, but in her sophomore year, her striking looks landed her a role in a campus film and she skyrocketed to fame overnight.”
“People were amazed to see the once-skinny little girl had grown into a stunning beauty.”
“But fate was cruel to her. Her mother never lived to see her become a star she passed away during Lin Song’s high school years.”
“Ring, ring, ring!”
Almost as soon as Zhang Jie finished speaking, Lin Song’s video call came through.
“Zhang Jie, you must keep what we talked about today confidential. I don’t want Lin Song to know I’ve been asking about her privately,” Bai Jun hastily instructed, not even glancing at Zhang Jie’s expression as she hurriedly wiped away her tears and answered the call.
“What’s wrong with your eyes?” Lin Song immediately noticed something was off, her voice full of concern.
Bai Jun looked at Lin Song, recalling the hardships she had endured, and felt tears welling up again. Afraid of being noticed, she quickly turned her head away. “I just watched a touching movie and got a little emotional.”
“You!” Lin Song’s expression carried a hint of helplessness. “You just got out of the hospital you shouldn’t let your emotions fluctuate too much.”
“I know,” Bai Jun replied meekly, lowering her head.
“I might be working late today, so I won’t have time to have dinner with you,” Lin Song said, her voice tired but still managing to remind Bai Jun, “Jun Jun, don’t be picky with your dinner, and remember to eat on time.”
During her hospital stay, Bai Jun had been eating bland food. She usually preferred spicy and sweet dishes and had complained to Lin Song several times about the lack of flavor. But now, she just wanted to go along with whatever Lin Song said,
“I’ll eat properly.”
“Make sure to turn up the air conditioning temperature at night. If you feel unwell, ask Zhang Jie.”
“Okay.”
“There’s a computer in my study. I’ve already downloaded some company documents for you to look at if you get bored. If there’s anything else you want to learn, I can have your secretary transferred over in a few days to help you download.”
“Okay.”
Lin Song continued with more reminders.
Unlike before, Bai Jun didn’t playfully tease Lin Song for being naggy or act contrary just to be spoiled. No matter what Lin Song said, she simply replied, “Okay.”
“Then, Junjun, remember to give me a good morning kiss tomorrow.”
“Okay!”
Lin Song on the other end suddenly fell silent.
Lost in her sadness, Bai Jun glanced at her in confusion, only to see Lin Song smiling at her with eyes curved like crescents.
It took Bai Jun a moment to realize what she had just agreed to. Her eyes widened slowly, and her face flushed bright red.
“You!”
“Then it’s settled,” Lin Song said, her smile radiant as she gazed at Bai Jun with that deep, intoxicating affection. “See you tomorrow morning, Jun Jun.”
“See you tomorrow morning!” Bai Jun stammered, her face still burning. Lin Song’s playful interruption had successfully pulled her out of her sorrowful mood.
Though they had already said their goodbyes, neither of them wanted to hang up.
Until Feng Yi’s dry voice came through from Lin Song’s side.
“Are you two planning to keep this call going till the end of time? Are we still having this meeting or not?”
Only then did Lin Song chuckle and end the call.
Feng Yi was such a liar!
Bai Jun stared at the darkened phone screen, and after a long while, she couldn’t help but bite her lip indignantly.
She claimed she had no interest in listening to people’s romantic conversations!
Yet she was clearly eavesdropping on her and Lin Song’s sweet nothings!
–
After hanging up, Bai Jun gradually composed herself.
She slowly pieced together the sequence of events she must have watched that variety show back then, felt sorry for Lin Song, and decided to support her. Little did she know that Lin Song would remember her kindness for so many years, eventually leading them to become partners.
The more Bai Jun thought about it, the more she felt she owed Lin Song.
Lin Song was so beautiful, the most striking presence in any crowd. With her kind nature and sense of gratitude, her suitors were likely as numerous as fish in a river. Bai Jun didn’t consider herself the most outstanding among them.
The main reason Lin Song had married her was probably due to the financial support she had provided years ago. Lin Song likely viewed her through a highly favorable lens.
Bai Jun felt she ought to treat Lin Song even better, to truly deserve the depth of Lin Song’s affection.
With this thought, Bai Jun became even more motivated and began carefully designing their home together.
She was determined to create a warm and happy family environment, one where Lin Song would feel comforted the moment she stepped inside.
Bai Jun had also briefly considered tracking down the old reality show to watch it, but after some deliberation, she dismissed the idea.
As a partner, Bai Jun always wanted to present her best self to Lin Song.
The fact that Lin Song never visited the hospital without light makeup and fresh flowers suggested she felt the same way.
Putting herself in Lin Song’s shoes, Bai Jun was certain she wouldn’t want her partner to see the pitiable, helpless, and lonely moments of her past.
She was curious, but she cared more about respecting Lin Song’s feelings.
Moreover, she was absolutely certain that she hadn’t married Lin Song out of pity before losing her memory.
Children from their social circles matured early. Though her memories only went back to age twelve, she could recall many people confessing their feelings to her yet Bai Jun had never been moved.
Perhaps it had been love at first sight.
Bai Jun still remembered the impact of seeing Lin Song for the first time after waking up, the rush of hormones, the tremor deep in her soul.
Or perhaps there was no reason at all.
Simply because she was Lin Song.
Unique, the most profound bond of body and soul, the most perfectly matched Lin Song in the world.
Despite her overwhelming shyness, Bai Jun set her alarm for 6 a.m. before going to sleep.
She intended to be the best wife possible.
No matter how awkward or embarrassing it might be, she would strive to fulfill every promise she made to Lin Song.
She couldn’t begin to imagine the hardships Lin Song had endured along the way. All she wanted was to do everything in her power to make Lin Song happy in the days to come. Even if Lin Song wanted the stars in the sky, Bai Jun would find a way to pluck them down for her.
