Chapter 14: Family Banquet His hands climbed onto Big Brother’s broad back.
The new house was already renovated. Fu Xici felt it was functional enough, so he didn’t remodel it further; he simply had it cleaned and filled with high-end furniture. Although the furnishings were of the best quality, the house still needed time to air out for Lu Yunchuan’s health. They weren’t supposed to move in until Lu Yunchuan’s school term started.
The Fu parents had no idea Fu Xici had bought property. The eldest son hadn’t told them and had no intention to; when the time came, he would simply take Lu Yunchuan to live in the school district apartment.
The entire Fu family was waiting for Lu Yunchuan’s exam results. From the family’s gossip, Fu Lingchuan had learned that Lu Yunchuan was a useless playboy with terrible grades—nothing like himself, a self-taught success. Furthermore, admissions for the local elite high schools were notoriously strict. They were almost always at full capacity, and no student was accepted without meeting a specific score threshold.
This year, the “repeat” score line for Dewei Aristocratic High School was 418—only about 30 points below the standard undergraduate line. Usually, wealthy students with that score would either attend an expensive third-tier college or go abroad. No one wasted a year of their life to “repeat” high school. Consequently, the repeat quota was mostly a formality; few rich heirs were willing to endure the “suffering” of study. In previous years, these spots were often given to graduating seniors.
However, there was an exception this year: Fu Kaijiang’s recently recovered biological second son would also attend Dewei High School for his senior year. To secure Fu Lingchuan’s education, Fu Kaijiang had donated an entire building to the school. This “True Second Master” was already being spoiled beyond measure by his parents before he had even set foot on campus.
With the exam results looming, Lu Yunchuan didn’t want to stay home and endure cold glares. He went out to find part-time work. Finding that no one wanted a temporary laborer, he ended up at a milk tea shop. He earned only 150 yuan for a full day of shaking tea, but he persisted for the sake of that meager wage.
Huo Yanxiu visited the shop every day, ostentatiously driving his Lamborghini through the streets. Lu Yunchuan was speechless and told him to be more discreet. Afterward, Huo Yanxiu started riding a shared bicycle to find him, staying by his side all day.
Seeing Lu Yunchuan’s arms ache from shaking tea, Huo Yanxiu massaged them while sighing helplessly. “If you just came to my house, you wouldn’t have to suffer like this. I’m not forcing you to warm my bed; I just can’t stand seeing you struggle.”
Lu Yunchuan told him to stop being so sentimental. “There are many people in this world more miserable than me. To be honest, this isn’t misery—it’s just the life of an ordinary person. I have to adapt sooner or later.”
Mid-June was Fu Kaijiang’s birthday. Everyone prepared gifts. Lu Yunchuan used the small amount of money he’d earned plus 50,000 yuan given by Big Brother to buy Fu Kaijiang a neck and shoulder massager, knowing that the man suffered from chronic pain that often kept him awake.
Of course, Fu Kaijiang didn’t lack the money for such a gift, but it was the thought that counted. Although his parents found him eyesores now, Lu Yunchuan couldn’t be an ungrateful “white-eyed wolf”; eighteen years of upbringing still meant something.
There was a family banquet that evening. Fu Kaijiang didn’t want a grand celebration, so the family gathered for a meal. Fu Xici messaged Lu Yunchuan, telling him to come home early and not be late.
Lu Yunchuan arrived around 5:00 PM, his gift in hand. As soon as he entered, he heard them discussing Fu Lingchuan’s schooling.
Fu Yunzhou’s voice was particularly grating: “Second Brother will be at the same school as me. We can go together and come home together. It’s pretty impressive that he can jump straight into senior year without doing the first two.”
Fu Wangshu, the eldest daughter and a graduate student in journalism, was also home for the birthday. When Lu Yunchuan entered, the group looked over. He politely greeted his mother and Fu Wangshu, ignoring the other two.
“Mom, I’m back. Sister, when did you get home?”
Fu Wangshu looked at him with a hint of disdain and didn’t answer, turning back to talk to Fu Lingchuan.
Jiang Wanyue eyed the box in his hand. “What did you buy?”
“A neck massager for Dad,” Lu Yunchuan said. “He often has shoulder pain. This brand has good reviews.”
Fu Yunzhou sneered. “Dad doesn’t need your cheap gifts. How many dollars did that cost?”
Lu Yunchuan suppressed his temper. “It can’t compare to your gifts, but it’s my sincere wish for him.”
When Fu Kaijiang and Fu Xici arrived, the father and son nearly identical in height and cold demeanor entered together. While Fu Xici’s features were more defined, Fu Kaijiang, now in his fifties, still maintained an aura of undiminished authority.
The children all greeted their father. No one acknowledged Fu Xici except Lu Yunchuan, who smiled and asked, “Big Brother, you’re back?”
Fu Xici smiled back and nodded. After washing his hands, he led Lu Yunchuan into the dining room by the arm. Lu Yunchuan didn’t dare sit until Fu Kaijiang and the others were seated. He sat next to Big Brother, his gift placed by his feet.
As the others presented their gifts, Lu Yunchuan felt his massager was indeed humble. Everyone else gave luxury items worth millions. Even Fu Lingchuan presented an antique Ming Dynasty tea set, knowing his father loved collecting.
Fu Lingchuan acted perfectly, his etiquette refined and elegant, showing no trace of a rural upbringing. Perhaps grace was indeed innate.
Fu Kaijiang smiled broadly. “This is a harmonious home. Nothing is more precious than family peace. On this special day, let’s eat.”
On the entire table, only Fu Xici and Lu Yunchuan hadn’t presented gifts yet. Fu Kaijiang glared at Fu Xici. “I’m not asking you for anything, Eldest Son. I lack nothing. I just think you lack a heart. I don’t blame Yunchuan for not giving a gift, as he is leaving this family soon, but you are my eldest son. Can’t you even offer a blessing?”
Lu Yunchuan tried to explain for his brother. “Big Brother has difficulty speaking. I’m sure he has much to say in his heart, he just can’t say it.”
Fu Yunzhou chimed in snidely, “He probably hasn’t liked Dad for a long time. Just look at the way he stares at people.”
Lu Yunchuan gritted his teeth. He had wanted to endure it, but he couldn’t stand this brat targeting Big Brother. “Doesn’t the Fu family pride itself on strict discipline? How can a youngest son be so disrespectful to the eldest? He is ten years older than you; is that how a younger brother speaks?”
Fu Yunzhou turned to Jiang Wanyue with a wounded look. “Mom, look at him bullying me again. He used to hit me all the time.”
Lu Yunchuan snapped back, “Wasn’t it because you were always picking fights? Even at my worst, I never dared speak a word against Big Brother. And you? Insults and lack of upbringing just roll off your tongue.”
He then looked at Fu Kaijiang and Jiang Wanyue. “Is Big Brother not your biological son? Why do you let him suffer like this? Don’t you owe him enough already? He is the eldest son. I’m just a foster child; you can treat me however you want. But why treat your own blood like this? Who turned him into this? If he hadn’t been injured for his sister’s sake, would these other two sons even have been born? Weren’t you the ones who wanted sons so badly?”
Lu Yunchuan was aggressive, holding nothing back. Fu Lingchuan shrank toward Jiang Wanyue. “Second Brother is so scary… will he hit me too? Mom, did I do something to make him mad?”
Jiang Wanyue exploded. “Even if the eldest is a fool, he is the Fu heir. What are you? What right do you have to speak to Yunzhou? You think this is your house?”
Fu Kaijiang slammed the table. “Who is the one being disrespectful? Fu Yunchuan, you’ve incited the eldest to treat us like strangers, and I didn’t settle that account with you. How dare you act so boldly at my birthday dinner? Look around who is the outsider here? Do you understand your place?”
Lu Yunchuan gritted his teeth and suppressed his fury. “I’m sorry, Dad. I shouldn’t have spoiled the mood. But I won’t allow him to speak about my Big Brother. He isn’t worthy.”
Fu Kaijiang opened his mouth to speak, but Fu Xici suddenly stood up and slammed his wine glass onto the table. The glass shattered into shards with a sharp crack.
His face was cold, radiating an uncontainable ferocity. He scanned the table and uttered two words: “Shut. Up.”
It was directed at Jiang Wanyue, and at Fu Kaijiang.
The room fell into a stunned silence. Fu Xici grabbed Lu Yunchuan’s arm and marched him out of the dining room, the banquet ruined.
Fu Kaijiang roared after them, “You unfilial son! You’re doing this on purpose! If you have the guts, leave and don’t come back!”
Fu Xici did exactly that. He took Lu Yunchuan back to the room, packed a few clothes, and drove away. The new house was ready; he had planned to move later, but his family was too repulsive to endure another second.
At the new house, everything was arranged. Fu Xici took their luggage to the bedroom. When he came out, he saw Lu Yunchuan standing in the living room, motionless.
He walked over and pulled Lu Yunchuan into a silent hug. He patted the boy’s thin back; Lu Yunchuan was too skinny.
Lu Yunchuan’s nose felt stingy. Being hugged by Big Brother made all the grievance for both of them bubble up. He didn’t refuse; he buried his face in Fu Xici’s shoulder, his hands climbing onto his brother’s broad back.
“I’m sorry, Brother,” he whispered. “You got scolded because of me again.”
Fu Xici’s large hand gently stroked the back of his neck in comfort. Even without words, Lu Yunchuan understood.
Lu Yunchuan exhaled slowly, regaining his composure. “I’m fine. Their words can’t hurt me. I’m going to study. I’m going to fly out of this cage. I hope that when I’m successful, they won’t come crawling back to flatter me. I want them to regret how they treated me.”
If he could get into the Air Force Aviation University, the entire Beijing circle would be stunned. No matter how much money someone had, it bowed before power. Then, he would finally hold his head high.
Back at the Fu house, the dinner had become a silent, somber affair. No one dared speak.
As Fu Kaijiang rose to leave the dining room, he glanced down and saw the gift box under Lu Yunchuan’s seat. He paused, walked over, and picked it up.
Jiang Wanyue said, “It’s nothing special. You probably won’t be used to it. I’ll have the maid throw it out later.”
Fu Kaijiang opened the box. On top was a sticky note that read: To my favorite Dad, Happy Birthday. Wishing you health and long life. Fu Yunchuan.
Fu Kaijiang stared at the note, standing still for a long time.
Fu Yunzhou grumbled softly, “It’s not like Dad hasn’t seen good things. Why treasure trash from a fake?”
Fu Kaijiang looked up at him. The head of the Fu family thinned his lips and said to his wife, “Go to the ancestral hall and bring me the family disciplinary whip. Fu Yunzhou, go to the study and kneel. Now.”
Jiang Wanyue was horrified. “Old Fu, what are you doing? Yunzhou is your biological son! Are you going to whip him for the sake of an outsider?”
