Chapter 13: Brother Complex
You’re how old and still sleeping with your brother?
Lu Yunchuan was still quite afraid of his eldest brother. Currently, his brother was his safe harbor and his sheltering tree; he wouldn’t dare to disobey him, even if he dared to defy anyone else.
Consequently, he declined Huo Yanxiu’s generous offer, though he still followed Huo Yanxiu into the Jiangfeng Villa complex for a look around. Despite having lived in luxury for eighteen years, Lu Yunchuan still felt this residential area was excessively high-end; if he had the means, he would certainly want to live there.
The house was beautifully renovated. He heard the previous owner had used it as collateral to pay off bank debts after a business bankruptcy, and it eventually ended up in Huo Yanxiu’s hands through a bank auction.
The interior was lavishly decorated in a Chinese retro style. The furniture was made of top-tier Red Sandalwood Zitan, making it feel as though one had stepped into the Forbidden City. Since this was the type of wood the imperial family used during the Qing Dynasty, Lu Yunchuan was left speechless by the sheer scholarly and historical atmosphere.
A bank representative explained the history of the furniture, revealing that these were indeed antiques left over from the Qing Dynasty. The agent noted, “The previous owner’s ancestors were high-ranking officials. Only the nobility could afford this wood imported from India. If he hadn’t owed the bank so much debt, he would never have parted with these family heirlooms.”
Lu Yunchuan felt a twinge of pain for the previous owner—the sheer determination it must have taken to sell off ancestral treasures.
Huo Yanxiu said, “The house itself isn’t that expensive; it’s the furniture that costs a fortune. They were supposed to be auctioned separately, but I grit my teeth and bought them all. Are you sure you won’t accept it, Achuan?”
Lu Yunchuan’s heart was pounding—not because of Huo Yanxiu’s generosity, but because he was about to reject such an exquisite residence. What sane person would turn this down?
Lu Yunchuan felt like crying, his lips trembling. “My brother won’t let me take it. He says he can’t repay such a massive favor.”
Huo Yanxiu found it strange. “I’m giving you the house, what does it have to do with your brother? You’re about to be kicked out of the Fu family, yet you still listen to him that much?”
Lu Yunchuan made a shushing gesture. “Shh. In the Fu family, you can curse anyone, but you can’t curse my brother. I only listen to him now. If he says I can’t take it, I don’t dare to. He’s taking me to look at school-district housing at noon.”
Huo Yanxiu was a bit annoyed. “Once I give something away, I don’t take it back. If you don’t want it, throw it away or donate it.”
Lu Yunchuan: “…”
Though he felt Huo Yanxiu was being impulsive, Lu Yunchuan couldn’t hide his grin. “Then tell my brother that. Say exactly what you just said, but right to his face.”
Huo Yanxiu nodded. “Fine. I’d like to see how your brother refuses such a benefit.”
After their tour, Huo Yanxiu drove Lu Yunchuan away, though the keys remained in Lu Yunchuan’s bag. He drove directly to the Fu Group corporate building to wait. Lu Yunchuan sent a text to Fu Xici:
Brother, I’m downstairs at the company waiting for you.
While waiting in the car, the two began to discuss life and ideals. Huo Yanxiu noticed something different about Lu Yunchuan. Reclining his seat, he asked, “You seem to have become much more sensible, Achuan. Did the news about being a ‘fake young master’ hit you that hard?”
Lu Yunchuan spoke truthfully, “More than hard. You haven’t experienced the feeling of being treated as less than human—having less dignity than livestock.”
Huo Yanxiu didn’t truly understand; coming from a prominent family, everyone was always deferential to him. People are vain like that; they only show respect to those at the top of the food chain.
Thinking of his past life, Lu Yunchuan sighed. After resting in the car for a while, his phone rang—it was a voice call from Fu Xici. Lu Yunchuan answered and got out of the car. He saw Fu Xici’s tall figure emerging from the building and waved. “Big brother!”
Fu Xici glanced over, hung up the phone, and went to get his car. Lu Yunchuan bid farewell to Huo Yanxiu. “I have to take my brother’s car. Just follow behind us.”
Huo Yanxiu shook his head helplessly. “Achuan, if this were a woman and I gave such a generous gift, she’d probably insist on marrying me.”
Lu Yunchuan rolled his eyes. “If you think a house can buy my whole life, you’re dreaming. I’d rather die than turn ‘bent’ (gay).”
Huo Yanxiu: “…”
Fu Xici pulled the car up to a stopping point. Lu Yunchuan habitually opened the passenger door and hopped in. Fu Xici looked at him silently. He clearly had many questions but couldn’t bring himself to ask, keeping his discomfort bottled up inside.
Seeing his brother’s sour expression, Lu Yunchuan took a deep breath. “I didn’t accept it, so don’t be angry. He just wanted to make up for my coming-of-age gift. It’s too valuable; I didn’t dare take it.”
In his mind, however, he thought: Huo Yanxiu spends billions like it’s nothing; giving a house to a poor person like me is basically an act of charity.
Fu Xici’s tense expression softened slightly. “Mhm.”
Lu Yunchuan exhaled in relief. Honestly, the only person in the Fu family he feared was his eldest brother. Whenever his brother frowned, he felt things were getting serious.
After twenty minutes of silence, they arrived at a school-district housing complex near Dewei High School. It was high-end, but not as extravagant as Jiangfeng Villa. Huo Yanxiu arrived shortly after in his Lamborghini, which made Fu Xici’s car look relatively humble by comparison, even in a neighborhood where parking started at 50 yuan an hour.
Huo Yanxiu leaned against his car and lit a cigarette. “Big brother Fu, wait a moment. I have something to say to you.”
Fu Xici gave him a cold look. Huo Yanxiu offered cigarettes to both of them. Fu Xici didn’t smoke and didn’t take one; Lu Yunchuan wanted to, but didn’t dare smoke in front of his brother.
Huo Yanxiu didn’t push it. He smiled at Fu Xici. “I’m gifting Achuan a house, why did you refuse? Don’t you know everyone in Beijing’s social circles is mocking him? The former second young master of the Fu family and future heir has now become a dependent…”
A dog.
That was the most common insult Lu Yunchuan had heard that he had no shame and was acting like a dog just to stay with the Fu family instead of returning to his real parents in the countryside.
Fu Xici didn’t respond. He simply looked at Lu Yunchuan and said one word: “Come.”
Lu Yunchuan shrugged at Huo Yanxiu and followed his brother to meet the real estate agent without saying a word. The agent, a middle-aged woman, was very chatty. She had met Fu Xici once and knew he was a man of few words, so she led them straight to the apartment.
Huo Yanxiu followed behind. The agent glanced at Lu Yunchuan and smiled. “Is the house for you? A high school senior?”
Lu Yunchuan nodded. “Yes, entering my final year next year.”
The agent began her sales pitch, claiming the area was likely to produce the next top scholar, a student named Qian Shuhao. Lu Yunchuan was surprised: “His family lives here?”
“You know him?” the agent asked.
“He’s a friend,” Lu Yunchuan replied. Huo Yanxiu was puzzled—when did Lu Yunchuan become friends with a top student like Qian Shuhao?
Coincidentally, the apartment Fu Xici was looking at was directly across from Qian Shuhao’s. The agent was delighted. “Isn’t that perfect? They’re right across the hall.”
She explained that the previous owners moved out after their child graduated. Fu Xici had decided to buy Lu Yunchuan an independent place so the rest of the Fu family wouldn’t interfere with his studies. Though Fu Xici hadn’t gone to university himself after high school, he wanted Lu Yunchuan to succeed more than anyone.
Lu Yunchuan liked the environment—the artificial lake and the greenery were beautiful. He was just worried about the price a school-district house like this must cost millions.
Seeing that he liked it, Fu Xici typed a note on his phone and showed it to the agent: We’ll take this one. Full cash payment.
The agent’s eyes lit up. “Boss, you’re so generous! Your son will surely get into a great university next year!”
Lu Yunchuan’s face went dark. “That’s my big brother! Does he look that old to you?”
Huo Yanxiu was shaking with laughter nearby. “Actually, I’m sometimes scared of your brother too. He really does look like a father figure, especially with that stern face.”
Lu Yunchuan glared at him. “Don’t talk bad about my brother. He’s handsome; you just don’t know how to appreciate it.”
Fu Xici glanced at Lu Yunchuan. They went downstairs to finalize the contract. Huo Yanxiu whispered to Lu Yunchuan, “I thought you said your brother had no money? He just dropped millions like it was nothing. You said he has no status in the Fu family, but I don’t think that’s true.”
Lu Yunchuan whispered back, “I used to think he wasn’t favored, but I realize now the eldest son is always the eldest son. With him around, those ‘little rats’ in the family can’t cause trouble. Why else do you think I haven’t been kicked out yet?”
Huo Yanxiu tsked. “This brother… he really treats you like his own blood?”
Lu Yunchuan said with a hint of pride, “Of course. Who else would be this good to an outsider? He’s my real brother. It’s so good to have a brother… we even sleep together every night. Who would dare bully me?”
Huo Yanxiu froze. “You sleep together every night? In the same bed?”
Lu Yunchuan didn’t see the issue. “Yeah, so? I’ve slept with him since I was a kid. I like hugging my brother when I sleep.”
Huo Yanxiu: “…” He looked at Lu Yunchuan with a complex expression. “Are you sure you don’t have a ‘brother complex’? You’re eighteen! How can you still sleep with your brother? Doesn’t he find you annoying?”
Lu Yunchuan found the question bizarre. “Why would he find me annoying?”
Huo Yanxiu frowned. “Achuan, your brother has a problem. Has he… done anything to you?”
Lu Yunchuan blinked, remembering a single kiss from before, but he didn’t think much of it. He told Huo Yanxiu to stop being paranoid. “You think my brother is like you? If I slept with you, I’d be worried. But my brother is different. We grew up together; he’s the eldest, and he’s very traditional and old-fashioned. That kind of thing wouldn’t happen.”
Lu Yunchuan added confidently, “Besides, my brother doesn’t like men. He’s even straighter than I am.”
