The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 64
“Are you two reconciled?” Mond Helge quietly approached Xiao San, who was preparing to cook. His footsteps were completely silent, and he appeared behind Xiao San like a ghost, suddenly speaking.
Xiao San clutched her chest. “You scared me to death.” She turned around and complained, “Do you walk without making any sound? What good does it do you to scare me like this?”
It had only been two days since she last saw Mond Helge, but he looked utterly pitiful.
“And you’re scolding me? You have no idea what kind of days I’ve been living these past two days without you.”
“What kind of days? Without anyone to keep you in check, you must be having the time of your life. You can eat whatever you want from the fridge, and Ah Qi is so easygoing, you must be absolutely thrilled.” Xiao San shook her head, clicking her tongue.
Mond Helge wore a mournful expression. “Easygoing? I almost died at her hands.”
“Exaggerating.” Xiao San ignored him and opened the refrigerator, only to find dishes her mother had made. How did she recognize them? It was entirely because of the distinctively patterned plate with a large peony.
“If my mom sees that even the plate is gone, she might think I ate the plate along with the food.” Waking up starving and being able to eat her mother’s cooking was pure bliss.
“It’s all Ah Qi’s fault. I completely forgot my mom left food for me. I suppose she has a bit of a conscience, at least remembering to bring the food back.” As for her mother’s worries, Xiao San had completely forgotten about them.
“Can I have a little?” Mond Helge pleaded pitifully.
“Just a little.”
Mond Helge happily grabbed his chopsticks immediately.
He had completely mastered using chopsticks by now. Though his technique wasn’t particularly elegant, his movements were quite nimble.
“You’re really too kind,” Mond Helge praised Xiao San without restraint. “Holy Mother Mary, you must be an incarnation of God, an angel!”
Xiao San was amused by Mond Helge’s words. “I’m usually so harsh on you, and you still call me an angel? Then Ah Qi must be your God.”
“God? She’s…” more like a demon, Mond Helge almost said, but he bit his tongue hard and didn’t dare utter the words.
The thought of those exceptionally cold eyes made him shudder involuntarily. It was only in front of Xiao San that Zheng Qi seemed human.
There were so many nobles in F Country counts, dukes, viscounts each one acting arrogantly.
Mond Helge had once believed he could live his entire life as a noble, unimpeded both domestically and abroad.
He had also encountered those corrupt high-ranking nobles, but not a single one had made him feel as oppressed as Zheng Qi did.
Moreover,
Mond Helge gripped his chopsticks so tightly he nearly snapped them.
Moreover, Zheng Qi was the one who had restructured the entire Helge family. If it weren’t for her, how could he have fallen to such a pitiable state?
Just thinking about it made Mond Helge fearful.
Zheng Qi was definitely a demon.
That’s why he absolutely dared not entertain any thoughts of betrayal or speaking ill of Zheng Qi behind her back.
Demons always know your deepest fears.
Poor San.
Mond Helge looked at Xiao San with a gaze full of pity.
She had been blinded by the devil and was about to be devoured.
“What’s with that look?” Xiao San shot an annoyed glance at Mond Helg.
“Thanks be to the Lord’s grace.”
Mond Helge quickly lowered his head, as if he hadn’t noticed Xiao San’s displeasure.
He didn’t dare speak the truth.
“What Lord’s grace? This is clearly my mom’s cooking,” Xiao San waved her chopsticks, scooped a mouthful of rice, and continued placing the other reheated dishes from the microwave onto the table. She hummed a tune while chewing.
“By the way, did you find your friend? Didn’t you say you got in touch with them?”
Mond Helge nodded. “I did. I’ll be moving out in a few days.”
“Ah, really?”
“If you’re happy, just laugh. Holding it in looks painful.” Seeing Xiao San trying to suppress a smile, Mond couldn’t help but point out her current mood.
“Why would I be happy that you’re moving out? After all, we’re friends, right?”
Mond Helge: “Heh.”
Mond couldn’t help but recall the scene from earlier.
He had finally managed to contact his domestic connection, a spy the Helge family from Country F had planted in this nation. Under normal circumstances, Mond would never have reached out to this person.
But the Helge family was undergoing a major reshuffle. The leadership of their faction had been nearly wiped out, leaving only him, a useless but titled noble.
He should be rallying all forces to counterattack.
In reality, however, he just wanted to use his remaining resources to escape the fallout of the family’s power struggle.
He was even willing to sever ties with the Helge family if necessary.
He had high hopes: this spy had been in the country for so long that perhaps they could help him obtain a green card.
But when he eagerly went to meet the contact, he didn’t find the expected person. Instead, he encountered someone he had met before Li Allen.
Li Ailun was quite famous in Country F, a publicly known assassin.
Rumor had it he was born in the slums and made a name for himself in underground gambling dens through sheer brute force. Later, he joined an assassin organization. Unlike other covert killers, Li Ailun loved flaunting his private life.
Everyone knew he was an assassin, yet no one could exact revenge on him. Whoever he targeted never survived.
Three years ago, Li Ailun suddenly vanished. When he reappeared, he had become the right-hand man of Count Corey.
Mond Helge could proudly say that, with the Helge family as his backing, none of Li Allen’s former enemies dared lay a finger on him. Of course, given Li Allen’s skills, he would have lived just as comfortably even without the Helge family’s protection.
The last time Mond saw Li Allen, he thought he hadn’t been recognized.
But today, when he went to meet his contact, it was Li Ailun who showed up.
“Are you the spy the Helge family planted in this country?” Mond still remembered that being his first thought.
Li Ailun shook his head and chuckled. “No wonder Miss Xiao likes you so much. This clueless demeanor of yours really does remind me of her.”
“What do you want to do to me?” Even a real fool would understand by now that Li Ailun had eliminated the contact and was deliberately waiting for him here.
Mond Helge was on high alert.
After all, almost no one had ever managed to escape from Li Allen’s grasp.
“Don’t be so afraid. After all, you’re Miss Xiao’s friend. If anything were to happen to you, I wouldn’t be able to explain it to her.”
“You’d better remember that.” Mond Helge felt a bit proud. Xiao San considered him a friend, and if Li Ailun cared about Xiao San’s opinion, he would surely be safe.
“However, Miss Xiao is very naive. If I were to tell her that you died because you weren’t paying attention while crossing the street and got hit by a car, I think she might actually believe it.”
Mond Helge immediately deflated like a punctured balloon. “Mr. Ailun, what exactly are you trying to do?”
“I just want to discuss a collaboration with you,” Li Ailun said nonchalantly.
“What kind of collaboration?”
Li Ailun asked, “Who sent you into the country?”
“I can’t say.”
“You don’t have to say, but I’ll find out eventually,” Li Ailun said confidently. “It might just take a bit more time if you insist on staying silent.”
“That person helped me. I absolutely won’t tell.”
Mond Helge gritted his teeth. Even though Li Allen’s words had shaken him, he remained resolute.
“Alright, in that case, I’ll have to kill you and come up with a lie to tell Miss Xiao. She might be sad for a while, but with the boss around, she probably won’t grieve for too long.”
Mond Helge watched as Li Ailun stood up and began to approach. There wasn’t a trace of murderous intent about him, but Mond Helge knew all too well that the more skilled the assassin, the better they were at concealing their killing aura.
“Wait, can’t you try a little harder to persuade me?”
Mond Helge was still afraid of dying. He quickly raised both hands defensively, fearing that Li Ailun might strike without warning.
“I’m not one to force others,” Li Ailun said. “Besides, I’m only giving you this chance out of respect for Miss Xiao. If I want to find that person, all I need to do is.”
Whoever managed to sneak Mond Helge into the country undetected definitely wasn’t from their rival faction.
Although Li Ailun had been staying up late reading lately and felt a bit worn out, dealing with a few incompetents was still well within his capabilities.
The one who could smuggle someone out right under Li Ailun’s nose had to be from Count Corey’s faction.
But this person was deeply hidden, Li Ailun hadn’t even been able to figure out who it was!
“I could just kill all the suspects.”
Li Ailun chuckled lightly, as if killing was something simple, effortless, and natural to him.
Mond Helge shuddered. “Wait, wait, wait! I think you shouldn’t be so impulsive. That person might just want to prevent the infighting in the Helge family from having disastrous consequences. They don’t intend to betray Count Corey.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, yes, yes! And there are others, others who are suspected but are actually loyal to Count Corey.”
“Oh dear, that’s not good. After all, my boss isn’t Count Corey.”
“It’s Miss Misery, I know. That person definitely has no intention of harming Miss Misery either.”
“You seem quite clear about that person’s thoughts. In that case. Could this person be…”
Mond Helge was absolutely terrified. “We truly have no intention of harming Miss Misery at all.”
“Is that so? But you clearly know who Misery is, yet you pretend not to. That, annoys me a little,” Li Ailun said mockingly.
Mond Helge knew that playing dumb was useless now and had no choice but to tell the truth.
“Indeed, I approached Xiao San with a purpose. According to the intelligence we received, Xiao San is very important to Zheng Qi. But we absolutely have no intention of harming Xiao San. We only want to convey our desire for peace to Zheng Qi through Xiao San. We just want to live peacefully within the Helge family and have no intention whatsoever of seizing power.”
