The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 62
“It’s not that I don’t want to see you,” Xiao San said, tightly holding onto Zheng Qi, afraid that if she let go, Zheng Qi would really leave.
Xiao San didn’t dare to look into Zheng Qi’s eyes, but she also didn’t dare to let Zheng Qi go. She could only fix her gaze firmly on the tips of her own shoes while clutching Zheng Qi’s clothes tightly.
“Then why did you run away?”
Xiao San opened her mouth, it really wasn’t easy to come up with a reason.
But the truth was, she didn’t know how to face Zheng Qi. She had always considered Zheng Qi her best friend. When she had intervened to break up Shen Lin and Zheng Qi, it was only to protect Zheng Qi from being hurt by a scumbag.
But she never expected that Zheng Qi would stop liking the scumbag and instead develop feelings for her.
Who would have thought that a tragic romance novel would suddenly turn into a yuri story?
She really…
Couldn’t quite accept it.
But she absolutely never, not even for a second, thought about never seeing Zheng Qi again.
She just needed a little time to figure out what had gone wrong in the process.
Xiao San didn’t say any of this out loud. She held onto Zheng Qi’s clothes, unwilling to let go no matter how much Zheng Qi struggled.
“So what do you mean now? You don’t want to accept me, but you won’t let me leave?” Zheng Qi had never spoken to Xiao San in such a cold tone before.
Xiao San pursed her lips, her head bowed so low it seemed she wanted to bury it in the ground. She felt deeply wronged, wronged that Zheng Qi was speaking to her so coldly, and wronged by Zheng Qi’s aggressive attitude.
“Ah Qi!” Xiao San called out Zheng Qi’s name.
Zheng Qi didn’t respond. “Xiao San, you can’t treat me like this. You can’t refuse to accept me and then forbid me from leaving.”
“Can’t we just be friends?” Xiao San whispered.
Zheng Qi let out a cold laugh. “Do you think I’m lacking in friends? Do I have to be friends with you?”
“Ah Qi.”
Seeing Xiao San on the verge of tears, Zheng Qi finally softened her tone. “San’er, you’re the one who told me to leave Shen Lin. Shouldn’t you take responsibility for that?”
“Huh?”
“What’s wrong with me? I can become whoever you want me to be. As long as you’re willing to stay by my side, you don’t have to think about anything or do anything. You can rely on me for everything. Could you possibly find someone better than me?”
Xiao San was left speechless.
She felt that something was off about Zheng Qi right now, but her own mind was even more chaotic, unsure of how to handle the situation.
” I just need some time to calm down, Ah Qi. Can you give me a little time?”
Zheng Qi gently pulled Xiao San into her embrace. “Alright, San’er. But San’er, I’ll only accept one answer.”
“Hey.”
“Fine, fine, don’t be angry. If you want to calm down, then calm down. I’ll come pick you up the day after tomorrow, okay?”
Before Xiao San could say anything more, Zheng Qi kissed her again just a light, fleeting kiss, like a dragonfly skimming the water. This kiss didn’t make Xiao San feel embarrassed or fearful; it was just a gentle, reassuring kiss.
Except this kiss landed on her lips.
Xiao San wanted to protest.
She wanted time to think, but Zheng Qi had arbitrarily given her only one day to sort things out.
“Why are you back so early? Aren’t you working today?”
Mother Xiao looked puzzled at Xiao San, who had arrived so early in the morning it was just past six o’clock, meaning she must have left home around five. Xiao San, who usually slept in until the sun was high in the sky, had actually gotten up at four or five and come back home?
Xiao San gave a noncommittal hum and walked in silently, heading straight for her room.
“What’s with this child? Why isn’t she saying anything?” Mother Xiao stepped outside, looking left and right. “Where’s A Qi? Didn’t she come back with you?”
Xiao San paused, her face suddenly flushing red.
“Did you come by yourself, or did A Qi bring you?” Mother Xiao closed the door. “Or did you come alone?”
Xiao San didn’t respond and instead quickened her pace into her own room.
Outside the door, Mother Xiao, receiving no reply, grumbled, “What’s going on? Did you have a fight with A Qi? Why aren’t you saying a word, San’er? Xiao San!”
Xiao San locked the door, her face flushed as she crouched by the bed, tightly clutching the blanket.
He had said he would give her some time, yet he had grabbed her hand fiercely by the roadside, not giving her any chance to pull away.
Even after daybreak, he stubbornly insisted on escorting her to the entrance of her building, saying, “I’ll come pick you up tomorrow.”
Was that the attitude of someone letting her calm down?
But…
The moment she showed any clear intention to refuse, Zheng Qi acted as if he was about to leave immediately.
Ah.
Xiao San let out a long sigh. How had things come to this?
She had only ever wanted to be friends with Zheng Qi, she hadn’t even considered that much at first.
Time passed quickly, and the day flew by in the blink of an eye.
Before Xiao San could even process anything useful, it was already time for her appointment with Zheng Qi.
“Xiao San, A Qi is here to take you to work. What have you been doing in your room all day?” Mother Xiao knocked on the door, saying a lot, but received no response from Xiao San.
“Auntie, let me talk to San’er. After all, I’m the one who made her angry.”
Mother Xiao glanced at the gentle Zheng Qi, then at Xiao San, who was throwing a tantrum, and sighed helplessly. “You shouldn’t always spoil her like this. Look at how she is when she’s with you, you’ve indulged her way too much.”
“Mom, what are you talking about?” Xiao San suddenly flung the door open, saying resentfully, “What do you mean, she’s spoiling me?”
“Isn’t it spoiling? At home, she at least knows how to wash dishes and mop the floor. But ever since she started living with A Qi, not only does she not wash dishes or mop, she even expects food to be brought right to her mouth.” Mother Xiao scolded Xiao San. “Those who know you think you and A Qi have a great relationship. Those who don’t would think you’re paralyzed or something.”
“Mom!”
“Back when your dad and I were dating, he never acted like this. I really don’t know what good deeds you’ve done to deserve a friend like A Qi.”
“Mom, what do you even know?” Xiao San stamped her foot in frustration. Mother Xiao had actually compared her relationship with Zheng Qi to her own dating days with Dad. One glance at Zheng Qi’s expression made Xiao San even more flustered.
“What do I know? I know you’re the type to take a mile if given an inch. If there’s an issue, just talk it out. Why did you have to run back home and not eat anything all day? Aren’t you just worrying your dad and me?”
Zheng Qi’s smile faded. “San’er hasn’t eaten anything all day?”
“Sigh, you young people should sort out your own matters. I still have to go help your dad at the shop, I don’t feel comfortable leaving him there alone.” As she spoke, Xiao Mama headed out, pointing toward the kitchen on her way. “The rice is still warming in the pot, and the dishes are in the fridge. Heat them up in the microwave when you eat. Whatever the issue is, you can talk it out. Don’t neglect your health over some small disagreement.”
With a soft thud as the door closed, Xiao San cautiously glanced at Zheng Qi’s expression.
She suddenly turned around, intending to shut the door.
But Zheng Qi was faster, pressing a hand against the door to stop it. Zheng Qi’s face was dark; she stood there blocking the doorway, her eyes shadowed as she stared at Xiao San.
“Hey!” Xiao San’s bravado faltered first. Despite her earlier show of strength in front of Xiao Mama, she was trembling with nerves inside.
“You haven’t eaten all day, just because of my confession?”
“I did.” Xiao San said weakly, “There are snacks in the room, I had some snacks.”
“So you didn’t eat a proper meal all day, just snacked a little?”
“Don’t make it sound like I’ve committed some unforgivable sin. If I were hungry, wouldn’t I eat?” Xiao San retorted indignantly. She just hadn’t been in the mood to eat, why did Zheng Qi make it seem like she’d done something wrong? “Why are you being so harsh? If anyone’s at fault here, it’s you! You’re the one who kissed me like that. If you hadn’t, would I have come home? Would my head be so full of you that I lost my appetite?”
Xiao San lifted her chin high, her voice rising as if volume could bolster her confidence.
“You don’t want me to like you?”
Xiao San looked helplessly at Zheng Qi, whose voice trembled as if on the verge of tears.
She was about to cry again, looking as though she’d been abandoned. Xiao San couldn’t stand that expression on Zheng Qi.
“Why are you crying? I’m the one who should be crying.”
“If you don’t like me, just reject me,” Zheng Qi said.
Xiao San: “But if I reject you, you’ll leave immediately, won’t you? You’ll make sure I can never find you again, right?”
Zheng Qi let out a bitter laugh. “That’s right.”
“Ah Qi!” Xiao San didn’t know what else to say.
“I gave you time. You could have chosen to reject me,” Zheng Qi’s tone grew firmer.
“Is that giving me time? You’re clearly forcing me.”
“I’m forcing you to reject me.”
“Bullshit!” Xiao San couldn’t help shouting angrily. She stamped her foot and paced around the room like an ant on a hot griddle.
Zheng Qi was clearly pressuring her to accept.
“San’er, why won’t you accept me?” Zheng Qi grabbed the flustered Xiao San, pinning her against the wall and raising both of Xiao San’s hands above her head. She leaned in close, their breaths unavoidably mingling.
Xiao San could only tilt her head away.
She didn’t struggle it was useless anyway.
“Is being with me really that difficult?”
“But, we’re both girls.” Xiao San had never imagined being with another girl; she’d always considered herself straight.
“You’ve never liked a boy before, so how do you know you can’t accept a girl?”
Xiao San fell silent.
“But you clearly enjoyed it when I kissed you, didn’t you?”
Xiao San’s face flushed bright red. “You’re talking nonsense.”
“Yet you responded to me you obviously liked it.” Zheng Qi moved closer to Xiao San, gently blowing air near her ear. She drew nearer and nearer until, the next moment, her lips pressed against the spot behind Xiao San’s ear.
“See? You could push me away right now if you wanted to.” As Zheng Qi spoke, her lips lightly brushed against Xiao San’s earlobe. The redness there was unclear whether it had spread from her blushing cheeks or been tinged by Zheng Qi’s warm breath.
