The Tragic Heroine Fell in Love with Me - Chapter 61
Xiao San didn’t quite understand the direction the story was taking. She looked at Zheng Qi, who was very, very close to her, with confusion. She could clearly see Zheng Qi’s eyelashes, the freckles on her nose bridge, she could see…
“Close your eyes.”
Zheng Qi opened her hand and covered Xiao San’s eyes. All Xiao San could see were the lines on Zheng Qi’s palm.
The delicate skin, the curved grooves of the palm lines, seemed like rivers surging and flowing.
Waves of water washed over the riverbed, smoothing small stones under the gentle spray, softness colliding with softness.
A little fish struggled desperately in the turbulent waves, trying to swim to the surface for air, but the stronger currents kept it from rising. It could only flail and struggle upward.
Was it the sunlight fading? Was the air pressure increasing? Were the surging waves about to pour down like rain?
She felt these subtle changes with unsteady breaths.
By the time everything settled, Xiao San’s head was resting against Zheng Qi’s. At some point, the two of them had ended up sitting on the edge of the bed.
Xiao San was held in Zheng Qi’s embrace, both of them breathless as they stared at each other.
Xiao San closed her eyes, her mind in complete turmoil.
“San’er…”
“Um…” Xiao San abruptly stood up. Her legs felt weak, and just as she was about to stumble, Zheng Qi grabbed her arm. Startled, Xiao San took two steps back, nearly falling again. She leaned against the wall, holding onto the doorframe. “I’m fine… you don’t need to.”
Zheng Qi let out a soft laugh.
“You’re laughing at me,” Xiao San said, glaring at Zheng Qi indignantly. Only after she spoke did she realize her tone sounded almost like a whine. She quickly lowered her head. “I… you, you!”
She stammered for a long while, finally managing to finish her sentence only after biting her tongue, the pain helping her find the words. “You’ve been traveling all day, you should rest. I’ll go back to my room now.”
With that, she quickly turned around and slammed Zheng Qi’s door shut with a loud “bang.”
After closing the door, she didn’t return to her room but stood dazedly in the hallway.
“Ah!”
Suddenly, Zheng Qi’s door opened.
Xiao San turned around like a startled mouse. Seeing Zheng Qi standing in the doorway, she dashed back into her own room, slamming the door shut before finally letting out a sigh of relief.
Her hand moved to her lips.
She bit her lower lip, as if some lingering warmth or scent still remained there.
She pressed a hand to her chest, where her heart was beating erratically, like a little deer in the forest fleeing in panic after being spotted by a hunter.
Zheng Qi had kissed her.
No matter how much she wanted to deceive herself, she couldn’t find any reason or excuse to explain what that kiss had meant.
It was definitely a moment of passion.
Zheng Qi’s gaze, those eyes…
Xiao San pressed her hand to her chest again. Her heart, which had just begun to calm down, started racing once more.
Thump-thump, thump-thump-thump!
Her disobedient heart pounded in her chest, making her entire body tremble along with it.
Xiao San clenched her fist and struck her chest a few times. Instead of calming her heart, the blows were too forceful, making her cough a few times.
Xiao San lay down on the bed, covering her head with both hands.
She shook her head.
She shook her head.
“Stop thinking about it, stop thinking about it.”
But no matter how much she shook her head, the scene from earlier kept replaying in her mind like a revolving lantern, flickering before her eyes.
“I’m going crazy.”
She should have felt angry, or disgusted, but in reality…
She covered her lips, unable to resist touching them again, feeling the lingering warmth.
【A friend of mine got kissed by a girl, and she actually found it kind of pleasant. Why do you think that is?】
After sending the message to Lü Yu, Xiao San stared at her phone, waiting for a long time, but no reply came.
What kind of answer could she possibly get?
Xiao San’s hands trembled slightly. She long-pressed the message she had sent and selected “recall” from the pop-up menu.
【I saw it even though you recalled it】
Lü Yu sent such a long string of text.
Xiao San stared at the words, her heart racing even more uncontrollably. She felt a mix of fear and anticipation.
She touched her cheeks, which were now so hot they felt like they were about to explode.
She spread both hands and patted her cheeks, trying to cool down the heat, but it was useless completely and utterly useless.
She waited for a long time, but no new message came from Lü Yu.
She sent six dots.
Lü Yu: 【I think you should know this when people say ‘a friend of mine,’ they’re usually referring to themselves… I think you’re aware of that, right?】
Xiao San: 【It really is a friend of mine.】
Lü Yu: 【Did you kiss Zheng Qi, or did Zheng Qi kiss you?】
Xiao San stared at Lü Yu’s words, unable to calm down for a long time. Why did it have to be Zheng Qi? Why did it have to be her and Zheng Qi?
【What does Zheng Qi have to do with this? This has nothing to do with Zheng Qi. My friend isn’t Zheng Qi.】
Lü Yu: 【That friend might not be Zheng Qi, but the one who kissed your friend is probably Zheng Qi, right?】
Xiao San: 【Absolutely not.】
Lü Yu: 【Do you think I believe you or not?】
Xiao San took a deep breath and threw her phone onto the bed. She didn’t know what she was feeling maybe anger, maybe embarrassment.
Lü Yu: 【You’re not getting all defensive because you’re embarrassed, are you? watching the drama unfold.jpg】
It took a long time before Xiao San picked up her phone again after it vibrated. Seeing the meme Lü Yu had sent, she felt her mind in complete disarray.
Lü Yu: 【Based on my experience, could it be that your friend likes that girl?】
Xiao San: 【But we…】 After typing “we,” Xiao San silently changed it to “they.” Even though she knew Lü Yu was fully aware, she still had to deceive herself pretend the other person didn’t know. Otherwise, Xiao San covered her face…
【But they’re both girls. Can two girls really be like that?】
Lü Yu replied quickly: 【What era is this? There’s nothing that can’t be done. As long as it’s love, it can break through all constraints. As long as it’s love, it can create all kinds of beauty.】
【Shut up.】
Xiao San replied with her eyes covered.
No matter how much her phone vibrated afterward, Xiao San didn’t open it to take a look.
This Lü Yu so unserious. She had gone to Lü Yu for help, and instead, she got all this talk about constraints and beauty.
So annoying.
Xiao San closed her eyes, but she couldn’t fall asleep at all that night.
As dawn was about to break, Xiao San finally couldn’t resist getting out of bed. Her eyes were dark and shadowy, having barely closed for more than a few minutes.
Feeling somewhat dazed, she went to the wardrobe to pack her clothes and make a run for it.
She truly had no idea how to face Zheng Qi anymore.
But a suitcase would be too conspicuous.
So, it was better to slip away quietly.
Just as Xiao San reached the living room and was about to head out, someone tapped her on the shoulder.
She turned around in a daze and saw Mond Helge looking at her with a puzzled expression. “What are you going out for? It’s not even light yet.”
Xiao San raised her index finger to her lips, shushing him repeatedly. “Keep your voice down, keep your voice down,” she whispered fiercely.
“What’s wrong?” Mond Helge mimicked her tone, speaking softly.
Xiao San: “I’m going out for a bit. You go back to sleep.”
Mond Helge: “It’s still dark outside. Are you sneaking out to get something to eat?”
Xiao San rolled her eyes at him. “All you think about is food. I have something to do.”
“What is it?”
Xiao San nervously glanced toward Zheng Qi’s room, afraid their commotion might wake him. “You’re so nosy. Go back to sleep and don’t worry about me.”
After finally pushing Mond Helge away, Xiao San tiptoed toward the door. “Don’t follow me,” she said, turning back to see him about to come along.
Her mind was already in chaos; she didn’t need to bring along such a big friend.
Once outside, Xiao San quickly ran toward her parents’ house.
Since it was so early in the morning, there were no buses and few taxis. She ran out of the neighborhood for a long time before spotting a taxi by the roadside. The driver was smoking a cigarette and, seeing Xiao San running over in a panic, thought she might be in some kind of trouble.
“Miss, are you okay? Do you need me to call the police for you?”
Xiao San shook her head and waved her hands frantically. “No, no, I need a taxi, a taxi.”
After saying that, she got into the back seat, gave the driver her home address, and finally let out a sigh of relief.
The thought of facing Zheng Qi in the morning made her so anxious she didn’t know what to do.
The driver asked a few more times, but Xiao San kept insisting she was fine, and he eventually relaxed.
Their place wasn’t far from her parents’ house only a half-hour drive.
Xiao San got out of the taxi, paid the fare, and stood at the entrance of the neighborhood, hesitating once again.
Her parents wouldn’t be awake yet. If she went home and ran into them, how would she explain why she was there?
Xiao San touched her hair, damp with sweat from running, and looked into the dark interior of the neighborhood. Only the streetlights were on, and even the security guard in the booth was fast asleep.
Standing at the entrance, Xiao San suddenly felt lost, not knowing where to go.
She crouched down, hugging her knees, looking as if she had been abandoned.
“Do you really not want to see me that much?”
Xiao San heard Zheng Qi’s voice. At first, she thought she was dreaming, but then…
She looked up and saw Zheng Qi standing beside her, a hurt expression in his eyes.
For a moment, Xiao San didn’t know how to respond.
“If you don’t want to see me, you can just tell me to leave.”
“Huh?”
After Zheng Qi finished speaking, she turned around and began walking slowly along the road beside the residential area, seemingly preparing to leave.
Xiao San immediately panicked. She quickly stood up, jogged to Zheng Qi’s side, and grabbed her hand. “What… what are you doing?”
“Didn’t you say you didn’t want to see me? I’m leaving now.”
