- Chapter 9 - A Serious Part-time Job
Fearing that Yan Xun’s loud voice would attract the attention of nearby students, Li He quickly pulled him into a corner.
“Xun’er, keep your voice down! Do you really think I would sell you out? I would sell myself before I ever sold you!”
Yan Xun’s face remained cold. “Then what is this male model atmosphere group supposed to mean?”
Li He explained, “Calling it an atmosphere group is just a fancy way of saying waiters. You just wear a mask, put on some nice clothes, and maintain a certain style.”
“Your mom called you several times the other day, right? She must have been asking for money again.”
As soon as those words were spoken, the expression on Yan Xun’s face changed.
His parents had divorced when he was in elementary school, and both had started new families. His father was a typical white-collar worker, earning a salary that was not quite enough to live well but just enough to keep from starving, barely managing to support his household.
On his mother’s side, however, her husband worked away from home long-term. Since giving birth to a younger sister, their life had been very tight. When things became truly difficult, she would turn to Yan Xun.
Yan Xun was only a student in his early twenties. Every time he gave in to his mother’s pleas and shared his living expenses with her, his own life became a struggle. Thinking of this, Yan Xun lowered his eyes, his voice sounding somewhat dejected.
“You saw that?”
Li He nodded and let out a sigh.
“Rest assured, I have done part-time work at this restaurant bar several times. The name is just a gimmick; there is nothing shady going on inside.”
“Besides, once you put on the mask and change your outfit, no one will recognize you.”
“The wages they offer are several times higher than the average hourly rate.”
That last point was what finally made Yan Xun waver. In this day and age, who would have thought that he, a university student, would still be worrying about his daily meals?
Yan Xun hesitated for a moment but eventually agreed.
The subway ride from the University Town to the restaurant bar was quite long. By the time Yan Xun arrived, the sky was completely dark.
The establishment was located on a street famous for its bars. At a glance, the area was filled with elegantly dressed and fashionable people. It seemed as if all the high-looking young people in Haicheng had gathered on this single street.
However, even so, when Yan Xun appeared at the entrance of the restaurant bar, he still caught everyone’s eye.
The floor manager was a young man wearing a bowtie named Liu. After meeting Yan Xun, the smile on his face was impossible to hide.
“Are you the classmate covering for Li He?”
“Yes. You must be Brother Liu. I am Li He’s classmate; you can just call me Xiao Yan.”
Brother Liu looked extremely satisfied with Yan Xun. “Xiao Yan, is it? With your level of looks, why would our restaurant bar ever worry about staying in business?”
Yan Xun was startled. He then noticed that, compared to the constant stream of guests at the surrounding bars, the business here did seem much quieter.
Seeing his confusion, Brother Liu started rambling.
“Sigh, guests these days only care about faces. Wherever there are handsome guys and beautiful girls, that is where the popularity goes. We have been on this street for several years. It was fine before, but since several bars opened next door one after another, business has become increasingly bleak. Our boss had no choice but to come up with this male model atmosphere group gimmick.”
With Brother Liu’s explanation, Yan Xun understood the background and felt a bit of sympathy for the establishment. However, sympathy aside, everyone was out there trying to earn a living, so he had to ask about the wages first.
Brother Liu was very straightforward. “Our boss is quite generous with pay. A waiter makes three hundred for the night. If you can dance, you do an improvised performance when the rhythm picks up, and the pay is six hundred. If you participate in our boss’s game card activity, the pay is one thousand two hundred.”
For a serious job, such wages were already excellent.
After finishing the introduction, Brother Liu added, “Can you dance? If you can, there is no reason not to earn that extra money. Just treat this place like a dance floor and have fun.”
The pay would double if he could dance. To be honest, Yan Xun was more than a little tempted.
He asked again, “What is that card activity? The pay doubles again for that?”
Brother Liu laughed. “It is just a little game the boss came up with to increase everyone’s enthusiasm for work. It is a bit like Truth or Dare. You complete whatever task you draw. Usually, they are very simple tasks.”
Yan Xun thought about it for a while but ultimately only agreed to do the improvised dancing. He decided not to participate in the card activity for the time being. Who knew what kind of tasks were in that activity? What if they asked him to sacrifice something? He was not new to part-time work; it was better not to dream about money he was not certain about.
The waiters’ uniforms consisted of pure black shirts and cargo pants. Aside from the top three buttons being undone, they were not much different from the waiters in any other restaurant.
Yan Xun changed his clothes, put on his mask, and quickly blended into the working environment. Just as Li He had said, it was indeed a serious job, though it was more tiring than being a regular waiter.
During the gaps between serving dishes, whenever the rhythm started, he had to stop and dance provocatively with his colleagues. It was lucky he was wearing a mask, as no one could recognize him; otherwise, he would have been too embarrassed to do such seductive dancing.
However, he had still underestimated his charm. With his golden-ratio physique, his movements triggered wave after wave of screams from the guests. The atmosphere was heated, and many people were taking videos with their phones.
One of those videos found its way onto the phone of the owner of the bar next door.
Inside a spacious private room, Lin Heng clicked on the video and could not help but whistle.
“Old Bai.”
Lin Heng leaned closer to Bai Yang while watching the video. “Old Bai, look at this top-tier waist.”
Before he could finish, Bai Yang, who was holding a wine glass, shot him a cold look.
“Not interested.”
Bai Yang’s voice was very faint.
Seeing this, Lin Heng sighed helplessly. “Old Bai, if I had not seen you looking so listless lately, I would not have bothered to drag you out for a drink.”
Bai Yang replied, “I am not listless.”
Lin Heng sneered. “You can lie to others, but how many years have we known each other? Do you think I do not understand you?”
Bai Yang pressed his lips together and remained silent.
Lin Heng continued to lean toward him. “Old Bai, do not just throw yourself into your work. You still need to let your body relax. If you do not use that thing of yours for a long time, are you not afraid it will go to waste?”
Upon hearing this, Bai Yang’s expression darkened, and he glared at Lin Heng. Only Lin Heng, who had grown up with him since childhood, would dare to make such a joke.
Despite the cold stare that would have terrified anyone else, Lin Heng was not bothered. He cheerfully shoved his phone screen in front of Bai Yang again.
“Look, how good is this little guy’s figure? Although he is wearing a mask, those eyes are very captivating.”
Bai Yang was not interested in the video, but the phone screen was nearly pressed against his face, so he had no choice but to look. He raised his hand, intending to push Lin Heng’s phone away, but his movements suddenly froze before his fingers could touch the screen.
He stared intently at the person in the video, and his pupils contracted instantly.
