- Chapter 2 - You're Retaliating Against Me
While the medicine was being applied, Lu Yubai’s face burned as if it were on fire. To ease the awkwardness, he took the initiative to speak to Yan Chi.
“How have you been lately?”
“Fine.”
The cool, thin tone carried no warmth whatsoever.
“I heard that you haven’t dated anyone else.”
Before he could finish his sentence, he felt a sharp pressure on his knee. The pain was so intense it contorted his face.
“Hiss, hiss, hiss! Gentler!” Lu Yubai cried out in a low voice. “Are you doing this to retaliate against me?”
He bit his cheek, feeling a sense of grievance.
Yan Chi replied, “No.”
Lu Yubai gripped the white lab coat Yan Chi had draped over his legs and said with suppressed anger, “You are. You’re definitely retaliating against me.”
He was retaliating against him for going abroad with an Omega three years ago.
Yan Chi’s eyes darkened slightly. He slowed his movements with a cold face, but his voice grew heavier. “I am not.”
Lu Yubai stopped arguing with him.
The frosty moonlight filtered through the car window, weaving through Lu Yubai’s hair. Flickering shadows of trees obscured his features. His eyes flickered as he changed the subject. “Yan Chi, when are you free? Let me treat you to a meal.”
“I have been very busy lately.”
Yan Chi’s voice was like cutting through ice and shattering jade, making it impossible to discern his mood.
“Alright then.” Lu Yubai let out a dejected sigh. “How is Grandpa doing lately?”
He had heard his father mention several times that Yan Chi’s grandfather had been hospitalized for a long time.
“He is fine,” Yan Chi said coldly, sounding as if he did not particularly want to talk.
“Can I go see him?” Afraid of being rejected, Lu Yubai quickly added, “Grandpa likes me a lot.”
Yan Chi fell silent for a few seconds. “I am free tomorrow at noon.”
Lu Yubai was stunned. Did you not just say you were not free? You have time to visit Grandpa, but you cannot have dinner with me?
“Then should I come to the research institute to find you?” Lu Yubai bit his cheek, feeling a faint sense of annoyance.
His legs, which were positioned extremely close to Yan Chi’s face, moved unconsciously. With that movement, his leg pressed directly against Yan Chi’s cool, thin lips.
Lu Yubai was mortified. Through his “hard work,” he had managed to turn an awkward situation into a total catastrophe.
“I did not mean to!” His face flushed a deep red as he retracted his legs and sat obediently while Yan Chi finished applying the medicine.
Vaguely, he felt the pressure of Yan Chi’s hand increase slightly. Before long, his foot went numb.
“Is it done? My foot is getting a bit numb,” he said awkwardly.
After finishing with the medicine, Yan Chi frowned and gave his leg a brief massage.
“Lu Yubai, I do not owe you anything anymore,” Yan Chi said abruptly, his tone colder than a frozen pond.
Lu Yubai lowered his head. “I know.”
They had broken things off very cleanly back then. For three whole years, neither had reached out to the other.
Silence fell over the car for a few moments.
Suddenly, Lu Yubai spoke, “Now that I am back, I will not be leaving again.”
He looked up at Yan Chi. The fire that had been extinguished in his eyes was being fanned back to life. His solemn tone made it sound as if he were announcing something of monumental importance.
“Mhm,” Yan Chi said.
Mhm? That was all?
Lu Yubai pursed his lips with dissatisfaction. He stole glances at Yan Chi every few seconds. Seeing no signs of disgust or loathing on his face, he dared to cautiously test the waters. “Then, can we still”
In the quiet car, Lu Yubai bit his lip, so nervous he could hear his own heartbeat. However, before he could finish, he was interrupted.
“No.”
Yan Chi’s tone was firm, leaving no room for negotiation.
Lu Yubai’s tense body stiffened. His thin lips pressed into a line, and his heart felt parched and bitter.
“In three years, you have changed a lot,” Lu Yubai said with a bitter smile.
He looked up at Yan Chi. The gold-rimmed glasses perched on a high bridge hid most of the emotions in Yan Chi’s eyes. That noble, cold, and aloof face was more serious and indifferent than he remembered, yet time had left no marks upon it.
In the three years he was gone, Yan Chi’s attitude toward him had grown much colder. In the past, Yan Chi would grant his every request. But not today.
He would decline his invitations, reject his gestures of goodwill, and was seemingly unwilling to even be friends. They had cut ties completely.
Looking at that familiar yet strange face, Lu Yubai felt stifled by bitterness. He wanted to hug Yan Chi, as recklessly as he used to. But he could not do that anymore. He could not act out like before because it would make Yan Chi unhappy.
But would Yan Chi still get unhappy because of him?
He did not know. He did not dare think further, so he turned his gaze to the window. Under the cold moonlight, he shivered slightly from the chill.
“I do not like Omegas.”
“Really,” he added. He had never liked Omegas.
“I will take you back.”
Yan Chi did not answer his previous statement. He lifted Lu Yubai’s legs off his lap and placed them gently onto the leather seat beside him.
“Okay.”
Lu Yubai sensibly stopped talking. He used to be terrified of the dark, and he hoped Yan Chi remembered that.
As Lu Yubai prepared to put his pants back on, Yan Chi stopped him.
“Do not put them on yet; it will irritate the wound,” Yan Chi said softly.
Lu Yubai nodded, his face flushing. Since his hands were covered in iodine, Yan Chi took the initiative to pick up the suit jacket Lu Yubai had just taken off and tied it around his waist.
As Yan Chi leaned in, his warm breath brushed against the curve of Lu Yubai’s ear, making his earlobes turn bright red. The subtle desire generated by invisible contact was fatal.
Lu Yubai stood there dazed, his blood feeling as if it had frozen, his limbs as stiff as a turtle. Yan Chi’s movements were very light. When his fingers brushed across Lu Yubai’s waist, the tingling sensation caused him to tremble involuntarily.
Once it was tied, Lu Yubai got out of the car. When Yan Chi walked to his side, he had an additional black trench coat over his arm, which he had grabbed from the back seat. He draped the coat over Lu Yubai’s shoulders with practiced familiarity.
However, he did not say a single word.
The two walked in silence toward the entrance of the Lu family residence. The distance of just over a hundred meters took Lu Yubai ten minutes to drag himself through.
Upon reaching the gates, Yan Chi stopped. “I am heading back now.”
“Your phone number, can you give it to me? We have to see Grandpa tomorrow.”
Lu Yubai held his phone out to Yan Chi. His voice was very soft, so soft he could barely hear himself.
Yan Chi’s eyes were dark. “I never changed it.”
Lu Yubai froze for a second, then asked tentatively, “Then, did you block me?”
Yan Chi replied, “No.”
Lu Yubai’s heart twitched. During the three years he was away, Yan Chi had not blocked his number. Perhaps he had been waiting for his call too?
Lu Yubai put his phone away. “Then I will look for you tomorrow at noon.”
“Mhm.” Yan Chi looked at the lit Lu family villa. “Go inside.”
Lu Yubai nodded to leave.
Suddenly, Yan Chi spoke, “Lu Yubai.”
Lu Yubai looked up at him, a faint glimmer of expectation showing in his dark brown eyes.
“What is it?”
