Chapter 31: Atavism 5.0
Having double-checked his schedule, Yu Congyue glanced back at Bai Xun. In the dim light of the parking lot, his sharp eyes caught a few stray sparkles on Bai Xun’s cream-colored head, and some crumbs on his body from when he had dived headfirst into a bag of dog food earlier. He had intended to wash him at home, but then he remembered the pet care shop Wooge had opened near the office recently—it was only a ten-minute drive away.
“Xiaobai, shall we go take a bath first?”
Bai Xun was currently curled up on the cushion yawning; the word “bath” didn’t register immediately. After all, for the past few days, Yu Congyue had only been wiping him down with cleaning wipes; he hadn’t had a proper, full wash yet.
Going for a bath? Wouldn’t that mean being seen naked by strangers? He hadn’t been bathed by a stranger in all his years. Even though he was in the form of a dog now, it felt incredibly embarrassing… But the scent of dog food mixed with some unknown staff member’s perfume on his fur was indeed getting hard to stomach.
Bai Xun fell into a brief internal struggle.
Yu Congyue held out both hands again, preparing to ask a question.
“Xiaobai, look, shall we go for a bath now, or…”
Ultimately, the shame was defeated by the temporary discomfort. Bai Xun chose the other hand directly.
“…Or go for a bath. Alright, we’re going for a bath.”
Wait a minute, that’s not right. Why were both answers the same?
Bai Xun hadn’t “spoken” much since his transformation, and now he barked out in frustration.
“Woof woof woof woof woof? (How can it be like this?)”
Yu Congyue didn’t really want others washing him either, but knowing Bai Xun was uncomfortable, he chose the most convenient option. Hearing the questioning barks, he simply shifted into gear smoothly. He glanced through the rearview mirror at Bai Xun, who was propping his front paws on the console trying to protest with his button eyes. He was so overwhelmed by the cuteness that he couldn’t speak and quickly looked back at the road.
“Bath first, then straight to sleep when we get home.”
…
Bai Xun eventually arrived at the care shop.
Yu Congyue hadn’t called ahead, but the moment they walked in, the receptionist’s face filled with surprise upon seeing him. They were quickly led to the VIP room. Shortly after tea and snacks were served, the shop manager arrived with two groomers, asking about their needs with a warm smile.
“No need to be nervous; he’s just here for a bath today,” Yu Congyue said as he picked up Bai Xun, who had his tail tucked and was wearing a “frown.”
“Oh, what a beautiful little baby! Look at this muzzle and these paws—this is definitely show-quality stock,” the manager praised as she carefully took him, quickly arranging the full-service package.
Bai Xun was initially resistant; he had never experienced being stared at by two people while being washed. However, when those gentle hands began massaging his fur with mild-scented shampoo, the tactile sensation made his resistance vanish completely.
Combined with the constant stream of compliments and the massage, the whole dog began to feel quite light-headed from the pampering.
After a long process of rinsing, blow-drying, and fluffing, Bai Xun made his grand re-entrance in a brand-new, fragrant form. Standing there, he seemed to have gained quite a bit of confidence.
Yu Congyue took out his phone and filmed a 360-degree video of Bai Xun to send to the family group chat. After snapping a few close-ups from specific angles, he scooped him up and buried his face in the fluffy chest. The scent of honey and almond mixed with a faint, cream-like fragrance left him very satisfied.
“We’re glad you’re happy, President Yu. The affiliated hospital officially opens in January. If you have any future needs, like neutering, you can come directly to us.”
The manager, seeing Yu Congyue’s satisfaction, flatteringly handed over a new membership card and briefly recommended their future services.
Bai Xun had been grinning foolishly, but the word “neutering” sent a jolt through him. He spun around and barked sharply at the manager twice in protest.
His life had only just begun. Even if he was a dog right now, no one was allowed to strip him of his right to seek happiness!
Yu Congyue almost failed to hold him back, stumbling forward two steps before steadying himself. Seeing that the pup was genuinely distressed, he suppressed the urge to laugh and patted his head, whispering comfort: “Alright, alright. No neutering. No neutering.”
Back in the parking lot, Bai Xun was still visualizing those short videos of neutering he’d scrolled through before. The thought of doctors decisively “snip-snapping” away the source of joy for cats and dogs made his lower half feel quite chilly.
He lay on Yu Congyue’s shoulder and let out a long sigh, feeling lucky that he was at least a Beastman. If he were a pure dog…
He shuddered. Suddenly turning his head, he thought he saw something flash in the greenery beside the parking lot. He lifted his head and barked toward that direction. Yu Congyue followed his gaze but only saw a few people passing by laughing—nothing seemed out of the ordinary. He tried to read Bai Xun’s mind, but found he couldn’t hear anything.
Bai Xun wasn’t entirely sure either; he thought he saw the reflection of a lens, but now it was gone.
Sure enough, half an hour after the two returned home, they “won” a new spot on the trending search list.
#YuCongyue DogLover?#
At that moment, Bai Xun was fast asleep in the dead center of the master bedroom’s duvet. The energy consumption during atavism was far greater than that of maintaining a human form. Usually, in the first week of atavism, most Beastmen stayed in a “hibernation-like” state of rest. It was only through his sheer love for money that he had managed to endure until the shoot was over before “passing out” at home.
Fortunately, he had eaten quite a bit during the afternoon commercial shoot, so Yu Congyue wasn’t worried about him sleeping on an empty stomach. After ensuring he wouldn’t fall off the bed, he picked up his tablet to approve some pending OA workflows. He was just looking at a budget when his phone began buzzing incessantly with notifications.
He frowned at the first glance.
First was the trending topic of him being secretly photographed at the pet care shop. Scrolling down, there was a trending apology from Bai Xun’s former company.
Whether intentional or not, while the apology contained the content required by the termination agreement, the wording between the lines suggested that “Bai Xun has someone powerful backing him, and the company was forced to terminate the contract.” Moreover, they had clearly spent a lot of money; the apology post was positioned right beneath the “secretly photographed” trending topic. With the two appearing together, the positive discussion about Yu Congyue being a dog lover began to shift in an abnormal direction.
[User A: YCY really seems to be a dog lover. Does anyone remember how he met that streamer?]
[User B: +1. That streamer is a dog Beastman, right? My friend mentioned it when they were filming the variety show at night—the last episode of ‘Departure 5’ at the wetland park. Apparently, the streamer blocked a sasaeng fan for Y.]
[User C: Ah… from this perspective, the MCN is so pitiful. The streamer gets famous and immediately wants to cling to a ‘big thigh’ and kick the original company aside.]
[User D: To the person above, Xiaobai’s early content was all his own ideas, okay? What does it have to do with [MCN]? Didn’t you see his wet market series was plagiarized by a colleague from the same company shortly after it started?]
[User E: Exactly. Xiaobai is a natural talent. Didn’t the fans love the vlogs he filmed for Yu Congyue before? Have you all forgotten the Didi incident with the company recently? The internet really has no memory~]
[User F: True. The photos Xiaobai took of our Yueyue are really refreshing. He hasn’t really tried to clout-chase, has he? It’s normal for a studio to retain talented people. Don’t be so conspiratorial.]
…
Fortunately, Bai Xun’s general reputation with the public was good. Plus, currently, there was no “substitute” for his type of content on the net. Even though water armies were trying to lead the narrative that he had powerful backing, fans of both sides stood united to defend his reputation.
Yu Congyue wanted to speak up for him, but seeing the speculations about “excessive closeness” in the comments, he looked over at the puppy sleeping in a tangled mess. Ultimately, he decided to leave the choice to Bai Xun.
He took out his phone and sent a message to the PR group.
[Yu Congyue: Leave the trending topics for now. Suppress the negative rumors, and we’ll deal with the rest when Xiaobai wakes up.]
