Chapter 30: Atavism 4.0
Upon hearing this answer, everyone felt a wave of pity, but the explanation Yu Congyue gave a second later made them doubt their own ears.
“After all, Xiaobai can’t film a commercial with himself.”
What did that mean?
Clearly, no one in the room quite grasped the sentence.
“Xiaobai,” Yu Congyue called out toward Bai Xun.
Bai Xun immediately sat up, turned his head, and clumsily waved his left paw at them. Seeing their dumbfounded expressions, he felt a bit like laughing.
The people who had just been petting Bai Xun looked at each other in bewilderment. In the common knowledge of modern society, besides “Long-lived Species” like their boss, Beastmen who underwent atavism during Atavism Month usually chose to stay home and avoid the public eye. Most people still held the conservative mindset of “Atavism Shame.” Those like him, who wandered around so openly, were few and far between.
Yu Congyue crossed his hands under his chin. He watched as Bai Xun triumphantly trotted back with wobbling baby steps, then reached out to scoop him back into his arms. He gave them enough time to process before speaking again.
“So, you can ask him for his thoughts on those two matters right here, but for the partner pet model, you’ll need to make other plans.”
“Since that’s the case, we actually feel there’s no need to look for anyone else,” the lead planner said, recovering from the brief shock. “Teacher Bai is perfect right now. He understands commands and can cooperate well. Even without a human in the frame, it works perfectly.”
The planner then opened a PPT presentation, detailing the discussed filming concepts and the theme for the new products.
Bai Xun had no objections. Yu Congyue sat up straight to let Bai Xun lean more steadily against his chest, then held out his left and right hands.
“Then let’s confirm things one by one. First, increasing the scope of the contract—do you find that acceptable? Yes / No.”
Bai Xun decisively chose “Yes.”
“Second question: are you willing to participate in the Wooge new product shoot as the spokesperson in your current form? Willing / Unwilling.”
Bai Xun chose “Willing” once again.
As the meeting drew to a close, the project manager glanced at the time, then at the dog tag around Bai Xun’s neck, and tentatively made a slightly “pushy” suggestion.
“Boss, since Teacher Bai is here today, and all the props for the studio shoot were prepared last week… if possible, we could do the shoot today. What do you think…?”
Yu Congyue didn’t want him to be so tired, but out of respect, he asked Bai Xun again.
Whenever money was involved, Bai Xun got excited. He couldn’t care less about atavism-induced fatigue and agreed without hesitation.
The manager immediately contacted the production team. Within half an hour, all necessary materials were brought down to the studio.
“Holy crap, as expected of the boss’s private studio. Look at these lights, these tracks… Wait a sec, is that Master Shan Xing?” The production lead was so stunned by the headquarters’ setup that he couldn’t form a full sentence. When he saw the photographer who came to “assist,” he froze in his tracks.
If he wasn’t mistaken, this was the youngest son of the Shan family—the pinnacle of the art industry. Leveraging the physiological advantages of the Peregrine Falcon tribe and his family’s support, he peaked at his debut. Shan Xing was a genius photographer who had won twelve world-class gold awards in five years. His commercial value couldn’t even be measured in money. For him to appear here today, it had to be because of the boss’s personal connection.
Shan Xing, accustomed to such stares, walked over to Yu Congyue with indifference. He naturally reached out to pet the puppy’s head and teased, “So that’s why you were so desperate to call me. You got a dog?”
Yu Congyue took a subtle half-step back, looked down to check the spot that had just been touched, and corrected him: “Xiaobai is an independent individual. As a partner, providing high-quality conditions is the only way to get better results.”
Shan Xing recalled the dismissive answer he got when he tried to borrow a team for his photo exhibition earlier this year. He rolled his eyes and, in retaliation, gave the fluffy head another vigorous rub. “Right, right, you’re the boss, whatever you say is right.”
“Stop pressing down on him, be gentle.” Yu Congyue frowned, using his hand to smooth out the ruffled fur. Seeing that everyone was ready, he finally placed Bai Xun on the main stage.
“Widen the aperture. And lower the color temperature of the fill light by one notch. This is a standard Golden Retriever, but you’re nearly making him look like a white-haired dog. Don’t you see a problem?”
Shan Xing sat in front of the monitor and sighed, leaning back with his arms crossed as he directed the adjustments. Yu Congyue sat to the side, flipping through the new product catalog, noticing that this series had quite a few snack products.
“You’re buying stuff from your own company?” Having finally perfected the details, Shan Xing turned around only to see Yu Congyue placing an order on an app. A closer look revealed it was all dog food.
“I’m not short on this bit of money. Procedures are procedures. Buying from a distributor also allows for random quality and sales checks.”
Yu Congyue paid, chose expedited next-day delivery, and then looked back at Bai Xun, who was being instructed to strike cute poses. His gaze softened instantly. He picked up his phone and started taking pictures, making Shan Xing wince beside him.
Was he possessed?
Shan Xing remembered their university days. Although they were in different majors, he hadn’t missed a single “rumor” about Yu Congyue.
While maintaining the top GPA in his major, Yu Congyue took over the new industries the Yu family was expanding into. He even had the energy to venture into the entertainment industry alone after graduation. His vision was equally sharp; every artist he signed, without exception, shone brilliantly in their respective fields. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that half of the current entertainment circle had ties to the Yu family.
Their first intersection was at the opening of the Shan family’s first gallery in Lushi. The Yu Group attended as one of the investors. Shan Xing was only in high school then, and he spotted Yu Congyue in the crowd at a glance. That cold, elegant face always wore a faint smile, maintaining a distance from everyone. He was composed and proper yet unapproachable. That maturity, far exceeding his peers, once made him the typical “other people’s child” in the mouths of parents.
Even after knowing him for over ten years, Shan Xing had never seen him smile so… genially.
Shan Xing’s eyes drifted to Bai Xun, who was raising a front paw and grinning like a fool. He couldn’t understand how such a not-so-bright-looking dog could cause such a massive change in the man.
Before he could speak, Yu Congyue, holding his phone, spoke up flatly: “Xiaobai is very smart. You’re not allowed to call him stupid.”
“Wait, how did you know—” Shan Xing suddenly remembered the mind-reading talent of certain high-tier Mermen. He smiled and cursed a few more times in his head.
The shoot went smoothly. By skipping the step of stabilizing a pet’s emotions, they finished five full looks in just four hours. After a few brief instructions, Shan Xing saw Bai Xun fast asleep in Yu Congyue’s arms. Knowing that a dinner invitation was out of the question, he simply pulled out two invitations and gave them to Yu Congyue.
“I won’t stand during the ceremony then. Late December. The time is there. You can bring him along. I’m off.” Shan Xing let out a yawn, grabbed his bag, and walked out.
Yu Congyue wrapped Bai Xun in a small blanket and took the private elevator to the parking lot. During the wait, he glanced at the gold-stamped invitation.
An auction?
Seeing the name of the sponsor, he understood.
He looked at the collar on Bai Xun’s neck through the rearview mirror. He felt that some other jewelry hanging on that neck would also look very cute.
“Tracy, keep an eye on the catalog for the Shan family auction. Send me a copy once it’s out.”
