Chapter 32: Atavism 6.0
Bai Xun slept until the following afternoon.
He slowly opened his eyes, raised his arms high for a deep stretch, and rolled over to sit up, scanning the somewhat unfamiliar room.
The decor was similar to his own room but more minimalist. Aside from the essential furniture, there was a desk by the window. After spotting a group photo on the desk, he confirmed this was indeed Yu Congyue’s bedroom.
No wonder even the duvet smelled faintly of him.
When Yu Congyue entered, he didn’t see Bai Xun at first. He only saw a wriggling “unidentified object” under the covers. Hearing the door, a fluffy head with sleep-mussed fur poked out from the edge of the blanket.
“Awake?” Yu Congyue scooped him out, smoothing his fur with one hand while grabbing a small red-and-white sweater from the nightstand. Only after dressing the pup did he carry him to the living room.
Bai Xun was thoroughly enjoying this “divine lifestyle” of being waited on hand and foot. He noticed that the rugs, which previously only covered the living area, had been extended to the stairs and the entire first floor.
Even so, Yu Congyue showed no intention of letting him walk on his own.
Once safely placed on the sofa, Yu Congyue set up a phone stand at the perfect height in front of Bai Xun and popped a piece of jerky into his mouth.
“Xiaobai, we were indeed photographed yesterday. Your former agency released an apology letter right at the peak of the trending topic.” Yu Congyue scrolled through the events of the past 24 hours for him. “The general sentiment is okay; your fans and most passersby are rational. However, the team suggests we don’t just stay silent. Do you have any ideas?”
Bai Xun chewed his jerky, scrolling through the comments with his nose. He wasn’t sure if his former agency was being malicious or just plain stupid. He had been worrying about his traffic dipping during a month-long hiatus, and here they were, handing him a silver platter of engagement. How could he pass this up?
He hopped off the sofa, lost his balance, rolled forward in a little ball, and then trotted to the speech buttons by the window. He pressed two buttons from memory.
“Film,” “Okay.”
Yu Congyue was startled by his tumble, but hearing the buttons, he translated: “You want to film a video response?”
The button rang again: “Okay.”
Bai Xun approved of his comprehension. Happy, he spun in a few circles and sat obediently, waiting for the phone to come out.
Yu Congyue stood up, pondering the content. He walked to a new cabinet by the TV, prepared some puppy supplements, and crouched by the food bowl with a scoop of freshly opened kibble. “How about this: we say you were originally at my house to film a new video, but suddenly hit your atavism period, so you’re temporarily staying here?”
Instead of worrying about being stalked by paparazzi, it was better to admit it openly. Besides, Bai Xun’s talent was undeniable; the videos he edited for Yu Congyue were on par with professional teams. Plus, he knew exactly what the audience wanted. His scripts were natural, and his fans were relatively forgiving.
Bai Xun agreed. He had already planned to use the daily vlog as a lead-in for a collaborative project called “A Day with a Peer,” featuring different guests. This would not only monetize well but also boost traffic for new talent under his wing.
Ignoring the temptation of the meat-rich kibble, he turned and pounded the “Love You” button several times. With such a reliable “brother” as a backer, his tail wagged like a propeller. He nudged Yu Congyue’s pant leg, whining with a face full of flattery.
Yu Congyue stumbled back two steps and sat on the floor, overwhelmed. Even though he mentally viewed the Golden Retriever as Bai Xun’s human form, he couldn’t resist the urge to vigorously rub that head when those little dark eyes stared him down.
Finally, he scooped up the furball, buried his face in the fluffy chest for a deep breath, and let out a satisfied sigh before putting him back down. After reporting to the team and getting confirmation, he decided to film immediately.
“Come on, Xiaobai, sit still. Let’s get this done.” To find the right angle, Yu Congyue disregarded his image and lay halfway on the floor. After some adjustment, he found an angle he thought made Bai Xun look even cuter, set up the light, and started recording.
“Hi everyone, I’m Yu Congyue. There’s a sudden situation I need to explain.” He held out his hand, and Bai Xun proactively placed a paw on it for a shake. “The little Golden Retriever from the trending photos isn’t anyone else—it’s Teacher Bai.”
“We were preparing a new short video project, but unfortunately, Teacher Bai entered his Atavism Month. Due to some ‘unavoidable factors,’ he is currently staying at my place. I apologize for taking up public resources, and I hope everyone won’t believe baseless rumors. Once Teacher Bai recovers, we’ll bring you more interesting content. Thank you for your support.”
Bai Xun spun in a circle, wobbled over to fetch a button, and hit “Love You” several times. He sat up on his hind legs to “beg” but lost his balance and face-planted forward again. Yu Congyue let out an “Oops!” with a laugh and quickly ended the recording.
Luckily, puppies are resilient and the rug was thick. He just rolled a bit and was back to bouncing around. Yu Congyue breathed a sigh of relief, checked the footage, and posted it right on the hour.
Just as he was considering taking Bai Xun out for a stroll over the weekend, the balcony door swung open. A cold wind made both man and dog shiver. Before they could see who it was, they heard a sobbing wail.
“Brother—Xiaobai—life is literally impossible now…” Yu Congji sat on the living room floor with red eyes, faking a cry. Bai Xun used his head to close the door and trotted over, looking up at him.
“Waaaah, Xiaobai, you’re the only one who cares about me…” Seeing his brother unmoved, Yu Congji snatched up Bai Xun and buried his face in the dog’s back, continuing to howl. He intended to fake it, but the more he thought about his grievances, the more real the sadness became. His tears matted Bai Xun’s fur into clumps.
“Don’t use Xiaobai as a tissue.” Yu Congyue finally reacted. He grabbed a tissue and “rescued” Bai Xun. “I told you not to get involved with company employees. You didn’t listen. What did you expect?”
“It’s not him, it’s He Shian!” At the thought of being heartlessly kicked out of the office by He Shian while Qiu You watched, Yu Congji felt humiliated.
When has he ever been treated like that? Everyone usually scrambled to flatter him. Who dared to brush him off with that attitude?
Besides, this was the first time he had “reflected” so hard. He was just a bit forceful, or maybe he hadn’t been attentive enough to Qiu You before—but he had apologized! What more did that rabbit want?
“Qiu You is very capable. If he resigns because of you, you’ll bear the consequences yourself.” Yu Congyue dried the tears off Bai Xun’s fur, his cold remark making Yu Congji jump up in protest.
“What do you mean by my fault? I apologized! If he doesn’t accept, it’s just him being ungrateful!”
“Besides, I bought gifts, I pulled strings—how else could a trainee become a full employee so fast…”
Yu Congyue interrupted him: “It’s the result of his own hard work. Your ‘pulling strings’ only helped his value be discovered faster. You know the company forbids nepotism for promotions.”
“Are you even my brother? How can you be so cold-blooded? I finally found someone I’m actually interested in, waaaah…” Yu Congji completely broke down, sprawled on the floor like a tantrum-throwing child, clearly intending to stay.
“The world doesn’t revolve around you. Don’t think having the surname Yu means you can do whatever you want. I actually have to thank Qiu You for teaching you that.”
Yu Congyue knew his younger brother’s temperament well. As the youngest, he was mostly indulged. The pressure of the family business fell on Yu Congyue and Yu Congming. Congji had always had whatever he wanted. Tripping up over a relationship was better than causing a disaster elsewhere.
Bai Xun sighed in Yu Congyue’s arms. He could guess the young master’s mental journey.
In his original world, he’d read plenty of “CEO Webnovels.” Usually, they were arrogant, emotionally numb, and only realized they “loved” the other person after causing physical and mental trauma—usually followed by the classic “Crematorium” phase where they have to beg for forgiveness.
But Yu Congji wasn’t that bad. At least with a sane brother like Yu Congyue, he likely wouldn’t do anything truly criminal.
Still, Bai Xun felt something was off. Instead of the “Little White Flower” being oppressed by the CEO, it looked like Yu Congji was being wrapped around the “White Flower’s” finger. At this rate…
He shook his head. Not his problem. But a more pressing question popped into his mind.
Yu Congyue had mentioned “unavoidable factors” in the video. How did the original host of this body spend his Atavism Months?
He knew that in this society, schools had care centers. After graduation, you either paid a few thousand a month for a care facility or handled it yourself.
But the original host was dirt poor. He couldn’t imagine how the last two years were handled. He’d need to investigate once he recovered—he couldn’t afford to let a slip-up happen during casual conversation.
