Chapter 26: Beauty is a Distraction
Yu Congyue wanted to stop him, but the words were already out. He could only try to smooth things over nervously.
“Ah, Xiao Bai, this is Yu Congji, my younger brother. Congji, this is Xiao Bai, he is…”
“Oh, Ge, I know. Isn’t this the one Mom sent the—” Yu Congji finally caught the murderous glint in his brother’s eyes and pivoted mid-sentence, “—the blogger she likes so much? She’s been scrolling short videos every day lately; she really likes you.”
Bai Xun was busy thinking that the man in front of him looked strangely familiar. Upon hearing Yu Congyue’s introduction, he realized they were biological brothers and marveled at the strength of the Yu family genes, completely missing the first half of the sentence.
“Ah, thank you, thank you. Ge, then your brother…”
“Just call me Congji. Bai-ge should be two years older than me?”
Yu Congyue’s expression stiffened. The number of times Bai Xun had called him by his name could be counted on one hand—how did this brat show up and immediately claim seniority?
“What are you doing here this time?” Yu Congyue interrupted, subtly stepping between the two of them.
“Oh, Mom told me to bring you some truffles and hairy crabs.”
Yu Congji remembered one of the purposes of his trip. He circled to the front of his car and pulled two foam boxes from the trunk. Seeing this, Bai Xun quickly opened the low gate between the yards and took the boxes.
“How long are you staying?” Yu Congyue followed behind and naturally took the boxes from Bai Xun. Seeing this, Bai Xun wagged his tail and ran ahead to open the main door.
“I don’t know.”
Yu Congji grabbed a bottle of wine, closed the car hood, and ignored his brother’s scrutinizing gaze. He followed Bai Xun inside without hesitation. His eyes lingered for a moment on the beast ears that bobbed slightly on Bai Xun’s head as he walked. He reached out to give them a pinch, only to have his hand slapped away by Yu Congyue, who had just set the boxes down.
The pinch made Bai Xun jump. He pursed his lips and carried the boxes into the kitchen, calling out:
“Then Congji is staying for dinner tonight? We still have the chicken from the mountain, plus some matsutake mushrooms. It’ll make a good stew.”
“Sure thing, Sis—cough—Bai-ge. Thanks for the hard work.”
Yu Congyue sat on the sofa with his arms crossed, frowning at Yu Congji, who was lounging haphazardly across the cushions. Remembering his brother’s earlier comment, he followed up.
“What do you mean ‘you don’t know’? Weren’t you having a great time playing with that rabbit recently? Is it over?”
At this, Yu Congji bolted upright. He squeezed in next to Yu Congyue and punched the sofa in frustration.
“Let me tell you, he’s no ordinary rabbit. I really can’t figure out what he wants.” He pulled out his phone and showed the chat logs to his brother. “What does he mean I ‘only solve problems with money’? I gave him resources and he didn’t want them. Said ‘true love shouldn’t be like this.'”
Yu Congyue saw the final message next to a red exclamation mark (indicating he’d been blocked).
[Qiu You]: Yu Congji, do you really think money can solve everything? I thought too simply before. I truly can’t afford to offend a Young Master like you. Goodbye.
[Yu Congji]: You really are difficult to please. What is that supposed to mean?
“How did you two start fighting?” Yu Congyue felt the name looked familiar, but he couldn’t quite place it.
“It was that ribbon-cutting gala in Haicheng. Everything was fine, he went with me, but who knew we’d run into people from my past? I was just talking to someone and then people started provoking him.”
“Deserved,” Yu Congyue gave a succinct evaluation.
Yu Congji ignored the sarcasm and continued, “I handled it immediately. When we got home, he suddenly asked me what our relationship was. What was I supposed to say?”
“So, what did you say?” Yu Congyue took a bite of a wax apple from the table. Finding it sweet, he got up, washed two, and brought them to the kitchen.
“I said we weren’t dating, so why was he asking me that?” Yu Congji followed him closely, leaning against the kitchen fridge. He opened the door, rummaged around, and found a jar of pickled cucumbers, only for Yu Congyue to snatch it and put it back.
Bai Xun was searing chicken in the kitchen. He paused for a moment while taking the wax apple, his hand with the spatula hovering as he tilted his head to listen more closely.
Yu Congyue noticed this. Clearly not wanting Bai Xun to miss out on the drama, he grabbed his troublesome younger brother—who was trying to slink back to the sofa to complain—pulled him back, found a small cucumber in the fridge, stuffed it into his hand, and tilted his chin to signal him to continue.
“What else is there to say? Then when I went to look for him, I found out he’d run away. I had He Shian run a check and found out he came here.”
Yu Congji wasn’t picky; he gnawed on the cucumber, still failing to understand why the other person had just vanished.
“Ran away overnight? That’s efficient,” Yu Congyue mused on the possibility of someone moving out within a few hours.
“No, he deleted me right after I finished talking to him that night. Ge, tell me, who dares to take the initiative to delete me?” Yu Congji bit off a large chunk of cucumber spitefully, muttering through his teeth, “But I do actually quite like him, so I’ve decided to give him a chance.”
“What kind of chance?” Yu Congyue furrowed his brows, glancing at Bai Xun, who looked equally confused.
“The chance to add me back and apologize,” Yu Congji provided a staggering answer.
CLANG—
The wok in Bai Xun’s hand slipped, hitting the stove with a deafening crash.
He apologized repeatedly: “Sorry, my hand slipped…”
Yu Congyue rushed forward to check on him. Seeing he wasn’t hurt, he let out a sigh of relief and returned to the kitchen doorway.
“Apologize for what? What did he do wrong?” Yu Congyue asked the question currently echoing in Bai Xun’s mind.
“How should I know? Shouldn’t the person apologizing be the one to figure out what they did wrong?” Yu Congji tossed the cucumber end into the trash and tried to open the fridge for another. “So I gave him the cold shoulder for three days. Not only did he not add me back, he actually had the nerve to move house.”
Actually? Had the nerve?
Bai Xun silently transferred the chicken and ginger slices to the stew pot. He was suddenly incredibly grateful he had met Yu Congyue. If he had met a giant infant like the younger brother, no amount of handsome looks could compensate for those character flaws.
Wait, we aren’t in that kind of relationship. Why am I comparing?
His hand holding the kettle paused. But he quickly thought that if he had a boss like this, the situation would only be more terrifying than being a lover.
Yu-ge is better.
He covered the stew pot, set the timer, and turned around to see the two brothers staring each other down.
“Ge, why are you looking at me like that?”
“I’m just… forget it.” Yu Congyue was at a loss for words, stunned by his brother’s denseness and lack of self-awareness. He waved him away and turned to help Bai Xun.
“Um, your brother… has he never been in a relationship before?” Bai Xun whispered as he chopped vegetables, making sure Yu Congji was in the living room playing with his phone.
“It’s just bad habits from being spoiled.”
After saying this, Yu Congyue suddenly remembered something. He pulled up the company’s internal HR software and looked through the autumn recruitment contracts. Searching for keywords, he indeed found a corresponding record.
Qiu You, Male, 22 years old, Pygmy Rabbit Beastman. Graduated from the country’s Top 1 media university with a degree in Communications. Performance during internship was excellent. He recalled receiving a request from the PR department leader for a special appointment. Current position: Brand Planning Specialist.
He picked up his phone, walked to the sofa, and looked at Yu Congji with a grim expression. “I believe I told you not to touch people within the company?”
“What people in the company?” Yu Congji was busy examining the wine he’d brought. “You mean the rabbit?”
He looked up and saw the rare seriousness on his brother’s face. He put down the wine and frowned. “How could he be from the company? Last month when I was running a contract in Chuan City for Big Bro, that VP from the Jiang family sent him over…”
Realizing he’d let something slip, his expression stiffened for a second before he quickly changed the subject. “That whiskey was stolen from Big Bro’s liquor cabinet. It’s a Black Gold Label. We should try it tonight…”
“Yu Congji.”
Yu Congyue’s expression was not good. The three problems exposed in that one short sentence were all potentially fatal. Currently, the company was preparing to expand into new territories; no potential risks could be allowed to exist.
