Chapter 25: Sharing a Bed
“Uh, Ge, I’m a bit sleepy. I’ll go shower first!”
Bai Xun scrambled back to the room in a fluster. At the door, he thought he heard a noise; the moment he pushed it open, he froze in a daze.
Yu Congyue, following behind, saw him standing still and stepped forward to peer inside.
The geese and several hens from the courtyard during the day were currently nesting comfortably on Bai Xun’s duvet. The once clean, tidy sheets and covers were covered in muddy tracks from the vegetable garden, and a very faint scent of chicken droppings lingered in the air.
“Pfft.”
Yu Congyue couldn’t help but laugh. Under Bai Xun’s bewildered gaze, he called the proprietress. She lived in the adjacent yard and came running over, grabbing the geese by their necks and shooing the flock back to the backyard.
“Oh my, Bosses, I am so sorry! It rained a few days ago, and I don’t have any spare bedding left. You’ll have to squeeze in together for tonight. I’ll have my son bring fresh sets up from the city tomorrow. Truly sorry.”
If Bai Xun hadn’t remembered that he really had left his door open when going out earlier, he would have suspected that the coincidences in this world were becoming a bit too dense.
“I don’t mind. How about you, Xiao Bai?” Yu Congyue leaned back against the frame of his own bedroom door, his eyes curving into a smile as he looked at Bai Xun.
“I don’t mind either.” Bai Xun realized he answered a bit too quickly and fled into the bathroom with his change of clothes.
He dragged out the time as much as possible, until his tail fur was washed into clumps clinging to his legs, his fingers were pruned from the water, and his entire body was saturated with the scent of body wash. Only then did he mentally steel himself to walk out.
It’s fine. It’s just sleeping.
Bai Xun gave himself a tiny pep talk at the door. As he hesitated, a gust of night air from the door crack made him shiver.
Gritting his teeth, he walked in. The first thing he saw was Yu Congyue leaning against the headboard reading a tablet. His loungewear was still loosely buttoned; in this sitting position, even more was revealed—a classic “half-hidden, half-seen” aesthetic.
Bai Xun wanted to look away, but he found, quite shamefully, that he couldn’t.
Yu Congyue seemed entirely unaware. He lifted the duvet, took a towel from the nightstand, and patted the edge of the bed.
“The tail isn’t dry yet. Want me to help you wipe it?”
“Ge, it’s fine. It’ll dry on its own outside.”
This was a bit private. Every time someone touched his tail, his nerves became unavoidably sensitive. Plus, since there was no convenient posture to dry it, he usually just wrapped a towel around it and went to sleep.
“I talked to Tracy before. If you sleep without drying it long-term, it’s easy to get back pain.”
“Huh? Is that a thing? Then… I’ll trouble you, Ge.”
Bai Xun was shocked. How did he not know this? No wonder his lower back had been aching lately. He didn’t consider it might be from sitting too long while editing; he scrambled to the edge of the bed and looked back at his damp tail.
“Um, Ge, you might need to be a bit gentle. It’s a bit… hah…”
Bai Xun clamped his hands over his mouth, his body trembling slightly with Yu Congyue’s movements.
The base of his tail was being held in a hand, and the sensation of the suede towel brushing against his waist—light and teasing as a dragonfly skimming water—made him regret accepting the help.
“Ge… I think it’s dry now…”
The last few words were slightly out of tune. Bai Xun never thought having his tail held by someone else would feel like this; it was several times more stimulating than having his ears pinched.
“Yeah, it looks dry.”
The towel was set aside. It was immediately followed by the warmth of a palm cupping the base of his tail; a thumb quickly kneaded the fur as it fluffed back up. Those few seconds made Bai Xun’s body, which had just relaxed, tense up again.
Fortunately, Yu Congyue let go quickly and lifted the inner side of the duvet as if nothing had happened, telling Bai Xun to get in before he caught a cold.
“Okay.” He kicked off his shoes and climbed in. The bed had already been warmed by Yu Congyue. Bai Xun had planned to stick to the edge and not cross the line, but it was hard not to be drawn to the heat source. He quietly nudged closer and, eventually unable to resist the drowsiness, fell into a deep sleep.
“Goodnight, Xiao Bai.”
…
The autumn mountain night was deep and peaceful. Bai Xun and Yu Congyue slept soundly.
Before sleeping, Bai Xun knew the bed wasn’t huge and had calculated how much distance to keep. He tucked himself into the corner and even pressed against the wall before turning off the lights.
But when he woke up, there was a warmth in his chest. The warm sensation under his arm made him snap awake. Holding his breath, he opened his eyes bit by bit. First, he saw a lock of black hair; further down was Yu Congyue’s peaceful sleeping face.
His body froze.
He was holding the man in his arms, his arm wrapped around the other’s waist, his palm flush against the curve of his body. Yu Congyue’s head was buried in his chest. The posture was as natural as an old married couple.
The solid, secure feeling of being stuck together made Bai Xun’s brain stall for a few seconds.
I clearly remember sleeping against the wall last night… How did I wake up like this?
He didn’t dare breathe, slowly attempting to retract his hand without disturbing the person in his arms. But the moment his fingers left the small of the back, Yu Congyue’s eyelids fluttered.
His eyelashes twitched twice as he naturally woke from light sleep. His eyes opened slowly, his gaze landing directly on Bai Xun’s face.
Bai Xun froze. They were so close he could hear the other’s heartbeat. He was flustered by the gaze but didn’t dare pull back, staying in that awkward position.
Yu Congyue didn’t pull away either. He just looked at him quietly for a second.
“Awake?” His voice was low, carrying the raspiness of someone who had just woken up.
The tips of Bai Xun’s ears turned red instantly. He gave a light cough and looked away, whispering, “Mm.”
The ambiguous atmosphere quickly cleared the sleepiness. Neither mentioned the “why are we hugging” issue. Bai Xun simply withdrew his hand and gave a “natural” stretch.
Suddenly, his eyes landed on Yu Congyue’s loose hair.
“Ge, was your hair always this long?”
Yu Congyue looked down at his hair flattened by the pillow. “I don’t remember. Probably?”
“It wasn’t this long a few days ago.” Bai Xun stared at the soft strands falling over his shoulders, couldn’t help but reach out to measure it, then immediately pulled back. “Is it my imagination…?”
“Probably not,” Yu Congyue chuckled softly. “Fast metabolism, it grows fast. I usually cut it every two weeks.”
Bai Xun blinked, staring at the hair on the man’s forehead. “So magical…”
“Do you like it short?” Yu Congyue asked naturally.
Bai Xun paused, replying instinctively, “Anything is fine. I feel like your face looks good with any length.”
The air went quiet again. Bai Xun was busy fiddling with the smooth tips of Yu Congyue’s hair, completely oblivious to the heat in the other’s gaze.
Just as they were immersed in the relaxed morning atmosphere, the phone by the pillow buzzed. Bai Xun reached for it and saw a message from TaoMai’s legal team. He read a few lines and handed it to Yu Congyue.
“The company is actually willing to settle peacefully,” he read aloud, his tone a bit airy. “They even attached a compensation draft.”
Yu Congyue looked at the expected news, then at Bai Xun’s expression. His voice was tender. “Seems they are smart. No rush to handle it; wait until a workday.”
Bai Xun clutched his phone, happily replied, and snuggled back into the warm duvet.
“Going back to sleep for a bit!”
…
The two days of freedom passed in a flash. If Yu Congyue didn’t have to work on Monday, Bai Xun would have wanted to stay longer. After breakfast, they packed. Before closing the door, Bai Xun looked back at the little room they had shared, feeling a bit of reluctance.
Yu Congyue naturally took the luggage bag from him. Bai Xun followed him down the steps. The chickens were wandering nearby, and leaves fell from the trees onto the stone path. Yu Congyue walked ahead, his back straight and steady, looking reliable enough to shield Bai Xun from all the wind and rain in the world.
They got into the car. The proprietress handed two slaughtered chickens to Bai Xun, waving from the door with a warm smile. “Come back when you have time, Bosses!”
Bai Xun, remembering the delicious soup, nodded vigorously. “We will!”
As the car drove down the mountain road, sunlight pierced the mist. It was a perfect end to the weekend.
When they arrived home, they noticed an exceptionally flashy supercar parked in the driveway of the villa next door. A moment later, a man who looked seventy to eighty percent like Yu Congyue walked out of the house.
“Yo, Big Bro. Brought the sister-in-law back?”
