Chapter 27: Atavism 1.0
“Brother… Brother, I was wrong, but I really like that rabbit. Think about it, when have I ever suffered such a grievance…” Yu Congji feared nothing more than his usually gentle second brother suddenly turning cold. He only realized he shouldn’t have mentioned the matter, but hadn’t considered the potential consequences.
Bai Xun had actually overheard the gist of it. He hadn’t intended to get involved in their business, but seeing Yu Congyue so angry he had a headache, Bai Xun sighed as he brought out a fruit platter and saw Yu Congji still looking stubbornly unrepentant.
“Congji, I only have one question.” Bai Xun sat on the armchair next to Yu Congyue, exchanging a look with him while Congyue silently sent messages. “You just said Mr. Qiu was sent by a B-side company. Since your brother said that, it means HR can definitely find his information. What do you think that implies?”
No matter how slow-witted he might be, Yu Congji finally realized where the problem lay.
With a “spring,” he stood up and prepared to leave in a hurry, but Bai Xun stopped him: “Aren’t you staying for dinner?”
“No, I have to go check on something right now…” Yu Congji frantically looked around for the coat he had just taken off.
“You haven’t even thought about what to check; what’s the point of going now? Stay and eat first,” Yu Congyue said flatly, his furrowed brows relaxing slightly after glancing at a new message.
“But…”
“No buts. Today was originally meant to celebrate Xiao Bai’s successful contract termination. As for other matters, we’ll talk later.”
Yu Congji could only sit down obediently, stealing glances at his second brother’s expression. Based on his lifelong experience, the situation didn’t seem as dire as he had imagined.
Nearly an hour later, with Yu Congyue’s help, a fresh meal of four dishes and one soup was served. Just as everything was laid out, Yu Congji returned from next door with a few cans of chilled ginger ale. Without a word, he shoveled ice, mixed it with a bottle of whiskey, and brought it to the table.
He solicitously poured a full glass for Bai Xun, praised the food excessively, and then raised his glass to toast his brother and his “future sister-in-law.”
“Congratulations to Brother Bai on successfully terminating the contract! Since it’s our first meeting and I didn’t bring a gift, I’ll definitely make it up to you next time!”
Bai Xun’s alcohol tolerance was quite poor; usually, when stressed with thesis writing, he’d only sip a little to relieve pressure. In truth, he didn’t particularly enjoy the harsh taste of alcohol, but this was a major burden lifted, and he really did want a drink. He stopped being reserved and gracefully raised his glass to accept Yu Congji’s blessing.
“Why talk about gifts? That’s too formal.” He took a deep breath, preparing for a sharp burn, but was surprised the moment it hit his tongue. Aside from the slightly sweet soda taste and a hint of lemon acidity, he could hardly taste the whiskey itself.
He held the glass up to the light, looking surprised: “I can’t taste the alcohol at all? It’s actually quite delicious.”
Yu Congji took a sip, smiling a bit mischievously. Seeing Bai Xun drink nearly half the glass in one go, he quickly refilled it.
“This is my secret recipe, I don’t usually share it. Come on, have some more.”
How could Yu Congyue not know what was going on? He just didn’t think one or two glasses of “sweet water” would knock Bai Xun out. A little tipsy relaxation wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Based on the final result, he had overestimated Bai Xun’s tolerance.
Before the second glass was even half finished, Bai Xun’s state was clearly off. He seemed to be sitting steadily, but his eyes were blurry, and he was aimlessly poking a piece of lettuce in his bowl with his chopsticks.
“Xiao Bai?” Yu Congyue called out softly, seeing him dazed.
After several seconds, Bai Xun slowly raised his head, blinked twice, and gave him a silly, vacant smile: “Brother… what’s up?”
Yu Congyue rubbed his brow, set down his bowl, and leaned in closer to test him: “Xiao Bai, are you drunk?”
Bai Xun didn’t think he was drunk; he just felt a bit slow.
He picked up the glass, drained the remaining half in one gulp, let out a long sigh, and shook his head vigorously. The ears on his head went “patter-patter” as they flopped with the movement.
“No! No way!”
Yu Congji held his soup bowl with both hands, calmly blowing on the steam. After a sip, he gave his brother a knowing smile: “Brother, look at that—was that a good assist or what?”
The next second, he and his bowl were kicked out and sent back to his own house.
As soon as Yu Congyue closed the front door, he saw Bai Xun wobbling and fumbling with the balcony door. Ignoring the messy table, he rushed over to lead him back.
“Brother… It’s cool outside… let’s go for a walk…” Bai Xun leaned his upper body against Yu Congyue’s arm, rubbing against him. He squinted and looked up with a pampered air, his tail slowly thumping against Yu Congyue’s calf.
A sober Bai Xun would never engage in such intimate behavior.
Yu Congyue admitted he couldn’t refuse.
He sighed, told Bai Xun to stand against the wall, and went upstairs to grab a thick sweater. When he came down, Bai Xun was still standing obediently, waving at him.
“Come on, arms up, put on the sweater. We’ll just go for one lap.”
To keep Bai Xun from falling, Yu Congyue held his hand tightly, fearing he might impulsively run into the sea.
“Brother, your hand is so warm…”
Afraid he’d fall while alone downstairs, Yu Congyue had just grabbed his own sweater. Now, looking sideways, he saw Bai Xun buried in the oversized garment, neck tucked in, carefully examining their joined hands.
“Brother, your clothes smell so good…” Before he could reply, Bai Xun took a deep breath and let out a satisfied sigh. “Smells just like Brother, hehehe…”
“Then do you like…” The words almost escaped Yu Congyue’s lips, but he braked just in time.
“Ah… I like it… I like Brother the most.” Bai Xun squeezed Yu Congyue’s hand tightly and suddenly stopped. He turned halfway, looking up at Yu Congyue in an extremely awkward posture.
The moonlight made his eyes look exceptionally bright, shimmering with a hint of moisture. Combined with his flushed face, Yu Congyue’s heart rate nearly hit its limit.
“I like you too…”
“I also like Matt, Sister Tracy, and everyone who helped me—I like them all, hehe.”
Bai Xun’s following words immediately cut off Yu Congyue’s impulsive response.
So, he liked everyone.
A pang of sourness—one Yu Congyue hadn’t even recognized—welled up in his heart. Even though he knew this “liking” wasn’t in the traditional romantic sense, he still felt a bit dejected.
“But! The one I like most will always be Brother!” As if sensing the negative mood, Bai Xun hugged Yu Congyue’s arm tightly and smilingly led him to a nearby bench.
“Brother is handsome, has a good personality, is rich, and is so good to me. Brother is my best brother forever…”
Bai Xun counted Yu Congyue’s virtues on his fingers, his voice growing softer and softer.
Yu Congyue’s mood improved considerably. At least for now, he was at the top of the list, which was better than being tied with everyone else.
He wanted to say something more, but suddenly felt a weight on his shoulder. Looking down, he realized Bai Xun had fallen asleep at some point.
Yu Congyue stood up slowly. He wanted to carry him back in his arms, but worried about crushing Bai Xun’s tail. So, he resignedly crouched down and carried Bai Xun on his back, walking home step by step.
In a half-dreaming state, Bai Xun felt himself moving, but he was surrounded by a scent that made him feel safe. He smacked his lips, buried his head in the crook of Yu Congyue’s neck, and tightened his grip.
“You…” Yu Congyue chuckled softly and deliberately slowed his pace.
The moonlight fell quietly on them, the sound of waves mingling with the occasional cry of a distant seagull.
In that moment, Yu Congyue felt an unparalleled sense of peace and happiness.
Once home, he expertly gave Bai Xun a quick cleaning and changed him into pajamas. After some hesitation, he decided to leave him in his own room.
“Xiao Bai, call me if you need water during the night.”
Yu Congyue brought over the quilt from the next room, tucked him in snugly, and looked satisfied at the obediently lying Bai Xun. He placed a thermos of warm water on the heating pad at the foot of the bed before turning off the lights to sleep.
Fortunately, Bai Xun didn’t cause any more trouble after falling asleep, resting peacefully until dawn.
Waking up naturally, Bai Xun opened his eyes groggily. After a yawn, he turned over and saw the still-sleeping Yu Congyue.
Every bit of sleepiness vanished instantly.
Why was Yu Congyue in his bed? No, why was he in Yu Congyue’s bed?
His memories of last night felt like they’d been severed by a blade, stopping right after drinking two glasses of liquid that tasted too sweet to be alcohol. He’d never had high expectations for his tolerance, but he hadn’t expected the seemingly harmless sweet drink to have such a kick.
According to web novel tropes, this plot looked way too familiar… Should he be worried that he went wild while drunk and then blacked out? Should he run away immediately?
He was about to try to speak, but Yu Congyue was woken by his tossing and turning. The moment their eyes met, those usually calm and gentle eyes were filled with shock and helplessness.
The change in emotion was so obvious that Bai Xun became even more afraid to speak.
He opened his mouth to try to explain, but the sound that came out was quite unexpected.
“Woof… Woof woof woof?”
The air froze for a second.
Bai Xun was terrified. He stared with wide eyes and tried to make a sound in his throat again, but it was a clear, unmistakable bark.
Yu Congyue raised a hand to cover his mouth, suppressing his emotions, while his other hand gently rubbed the top of Bai Xun’s head. It was a gesture of certain confirmation—gentle yet clearly anxious.
Pushed down by the pressure, Bai Xun looked down. He saw the loose pajamas draped on the bed and a pair of paws belonging to a large dog.
How had he turned into a dog?
