- Chapter 14 - The Demon Sect Leader Suffers from Insomnia (1)
Lin Junqing felt his soul being pulled away. When he opened his eyes a second later, he realized he was falling rapidly through the air.
“System, what on earth are you doing? I appeared in mid-air and am going to be smashed to death!”
The System cleared its throat, feeling embarrassed, and quickly apologized. “I am sorry. There was an error with the extraction coordinates. We did not appear directly in the valley but high above it. Do not worry, Host; there is a lake below, so you will not die.”
Lin Junqing did not have time to criticize the System’s incompetence before his body slammed heavily into the lake. In that instant, he was certain every bone in his body had been shattered. He was on the verge of death, his vision blurred from the pain as he slowly sank to the bottom like a dead fish.
“You useless System, I cannot swim!”
The System grew anxious. “Do not panic. The more dangerous the situation, the more you need to stay calm. As long as there is a breath left in your body, you will not die. Your injuries are currently healing, and you will not lack oxygen during the process. I will teach you a posture. Lie down and relax your body, and you will float to the surface soon.”
Lin Junqing wanted to curse the System again. Just because his body could automatically regenerate did not mean he was immune to pain. Having every bone in his body shattered and then forcibly realigned as they healed was an agony comparable to being flayed alive.
After enduring the most painful stage and finally regaining some strength, the System issued an urgent warning. “Host, flee! Many carnivorous animals are swimming toward you. Your blood is as precious as a celestial treasure and has a fatal attraction for ordinary creatures.”
Lin Junqing cursed the System once more before using the rudimentary swimming technique he had just learned to scramble toward the shore. By the time he dragged himself onto the bank, he was covered in wounds. A large fish had bitten a chunk of meat from his lower leg, and his clothes were reduced to tatters. Looking at his miserable state, Lin Junqing fell into deep thought.
“System, tell me the truth. Did I offend you somewhere?”
The System lacked a physical form, but if it had one, it would surely be blushing. It explained urgently, “I am a support system, and I could never harm you. The Heavenly Dao of this world provided the coordinates, but for some reason, they shifted upon our arrival.”
“Host, this is not the time for complaints. Your wounds are still bleeding, and you must leave immediately. There are wolves and wild boars in this valley; it will be disastrous if you encounter them.”
Lin Junqing gritted his teeth against the pain, tore a strip from his ruined clothes, and wrapped it tightly around his leg. The minor injuries on the rest of his body had already healed. The fact that his shattered bones and internal organs could recover in less than half an hour proved that the reward from the Heavenly Dao was indeed formidable. It was no wonder so many Hosts would do anything to complete their missions.
Lin Junqing hobbled away. Shortly after he left, a dozen wolves appeared where he had been standing, frantically fighting over the blood-soaked soil. Less than ten minutes later, the wound on his leg had completely vanished.
Lin Junqing was shocked. “My wounds heal too quickly. If people in this world see this, they will surely think I am a demon.”
One is always wary of those who are not of one’s own kind. If his uniqueness were discovered, he would likely be imprisoned or killed.
The System agreed. “Yes, Host. If you want to remain safe, you must conceal your special constitution, or you will certainly be captured and experimented upon.”
Lin Junqing walked through the forest for most of the day. Fortunately, the System’s exploration function helped him avoid dangerous terrain and predatory animals. As the sun began to set, Lin Junqing grew anxious, as he had not yet found shelter. He was a novice in the wild, but he knew the mountain forest was at its most dangerous at night.
The System’s detection range was limited to only one kilometer. If a pack of wolves tracked him, he could not outrun them. The Heavenly Dao’s reward gave him superior healing but did not enhance his physical stamina.
As Lin Junqing looked up at the trees, contemplating hiding in the branches for the night, the System suddenly spoke. “Host, I have spotted a cave containing firewood and daily necessities. It appears to be a supply depot for hunters in the mountains.”
Lin Junqing immediately abandoned his search for a tree and followed the System’s directions, stumbling toward the cave.
“This world is so vast; how long will it take to find the Child of Destiny?”
The System replied, “Ordinarily, the location where you landed should be close to the Child of Destiny. You will meet them eventually. My current abilities are too weak, as I can only explore a one-kilometer radius. If my range were larger, finding the Child of Destiny would be much easier.”
Lin Junqing asked how the System could become stronger. “I have already received the Heavenly Dao’s reward, and I feel my physical fitness has significantly improved. I have walked for so long, yet my legs are not shaking, and I feel no shortness of breath.”
His point was clear: he had become stronger, so why was the System still so weak?
The System sounded frustrated. “I could only explore one kilometer in the previous world. In this world, I can explore 1.3 kilometers. I have made progress. The stronger the Host’s soul, the stronger my abilities become.”
Ten minutes later, Lin Junqing reached the cave and found a set of clean, short-sleeved garments. He gathered some firewood, lit a fire, and burned his modern clothes, as they did not belong to this era.
As the sun sank below the horizon, Lin Junqing huddled in the cave, hungry. The fire provided a sense of safety, but he dared not sleep. Venomous snakes were active at night, and his blood was like a precious treasure; he feared being bitten in his sleep. Although he could recover from snake venom, the deep puncture wounds would still cause pain.
When hungry, Lin Junqing could not help but think of Xie Lin from the previous world. Even after sleeping for so long in the soul space, he could not forget Xie Lin’s final words.
“System, do you think Xie Lin will remember me after he is reincarnated?”
The soul of a Child of Destiny is powerful, and under normal circumstances, they enter the cycle of reincarnation upon death. In the previous world, Xie Lin died of toxins; as long as it was not a direct strike from the Heavenly Dao, his death was considered natural.
The System felt Lin Junqing was overthinking. “Host, even if Xie Lin is reincarnated, he will have no memories of his previous life. You slept in the system space for over thirty years; Xie Lin may have already been reincarnated several times. The probability of you and him appearing in the same world again is less than one in a billion. You will not meet again. Even if you did, you would not recognize him, and he would certainly not recognize you.”
Lin Junqing smiled at the firelight and said nothing for a long time. Finally, he whispered, “I hope the Child of Destiny in this world is more normal.”
The System hesitated for a second. “That might disappoint you. A Child of Destiny with signs of corruption can never be normal. If he seems normal, it only means he is an expert at deception.”
Seeing that Lin Junqing was exhausted, the System suggested, “Host, go to sleep. If danger approaches, I will wake you.”
Lin Junqing was stunned. Right, he was not fighting alone; he had the System. With the System monitoring the surroundings, he could finally rest.
Just before dawn, Lin Junqing heard the clashing of blades. As he woke, the System spoke. “Host, two people are using martial arts techniques to fly in your direction. Both are severely injured, and their fighting styles indicate a death feud.”
Lin Junqing climbed up and quickly extinguished the fire. He waited in the cave, trembling, for nearly half an hour before the System reported the outcome.
“The battle outside has been decided. The white-clad man with the sword won, but he will not live much longer. You can go out now to scavenge.”
Lin Junqing ignored the System. The man was still alive; he would not go out yet. What if the man, resentful in his final moments, decided to take someone down with him? He possessed no martial arts skills and could not dodge a dying expert’s final strike. The System sighed at Lin Junqing’s caution.
“I am Liu Zheng, a disciple of the Medicine Immortal Valley. I hope the friend in the cave will come out to meet me. I have a request and am willing to entrust you with all the belongings I have on me.”
The System whispered, “Host, the name Medicine Immortal Valley sounds like a place that heals and saves people. When he spoke, his expression was calm, with no bitterness or hatred. He likely does not intend to kill you.”
Lin Junqing hesitated. If the man had not discovered him, he would have waited for him to die. But since he was discovered and offered money to help, he considered it. In any case, the man was not the Child of Destiny. If he were killed, the mission would simply fail, and he could start over in the soul space.
Lin Junqing decided to leave the cave to hear the man’s request. Following the System’s directions, he observed the surroundings, shocked to see giant trees shattered by internal energy and sword marks on the ground like deep trenches. This was martial arts: the ability to crush boulders with physical power and project voices across hundreds of meters as if they were whispers in one’s ear.
“System, can I learn martial arts?”
Everyone had a childhood dream of being a sword-wielding hero.
The System replied calmly, “Martial arts require talent and intuition, and it is best to learn from a young age. Your skeleton is already formed; it would be difficult for you to become a top-tier expert without a miracle. However, learning some self-defense techniques should be fine, provided you find a good master.”
Lin Junqing’s goal was never to be a top expert; he would be satisfied just being a third-rate one.
Lin Junqing approached the blood-stained man in white, keeping a respectful distance. “Sir, what is it you wish to entrust me with?”
He had intended to call him a hero, but seeing the man’s scholarly air, he chose to address him as Sir.
Liu Zheng saw that the newcomer wore ill-fitting hunter’s clothes and appeared to be about twenty years old. Sensing no internal energy, he realized the man was not a martial artist and felt relieved. He did not pay much attention to Lin Junqing’s strange short hair, as many in the martial arts world had far weirder styles. He was, however, surprised by Lin Junqing’s skin, which was smoother than a woman’s, and wondered if he was a young nobleman.
Liu Zheng leaned against a tree, bowed with difficulty, and spoke weakly. “Young Master, could I trouble you to take my sword to the Medicine Immortal Valley? Tell the disciples that I have found a traitor who leaked the secret of our valley’s treasure to the Demon Sect. I tried my best to intercept them, but one slipped away.”
There was much more Liu Zheng wanted to say, but he knew his time was running out. “The mountain path to the valley is treacherous. I will draw a rough map for you. There are outer disciples patrolling the perimeter. If you carry my sword, they will not trouble you. Once you see our elders, tell them the truth.”
After speaking, Liu Zheng pulled a blood-stained pouch from his chest and placed it on the ground, then tore a piece of his clothing to draw the map with his bloodied finger.
