- Chapter 13 - The Wealthy Tycoon Suffers from Mental Illness (Finale)
The doctor found Lin Junqing, his expression heavy with sorrow. “Mr. Lin, Mr. Xie’s mental state has deteriorated severely. The three years we initially estimated are likely no longer attainable.”
Lin Junqing pressed his lips together. “How much time does he have left?”
Living with Xie Lin every day, he was well aware of Xie Lin’s psychological state and understood the source of his agony. He had overheard Xie Lin talking in his sleep several times; he dreamed of wanting Lin Junqing to die, yet he was unable to bring himself to act upon it when awake.
The doctor sighed, “Three months at most.”
The doctor hoped Lin Junqing could persuade Xie Lin, but how could he? Xie Lin’s deep-seated obsession was to have Lin Junqing accompany him to the grave.
Sensing his condition worsening, Xie Lin calmly consulted the doctor. Upon learning he had at most one month left, he bowed his head and let out a frantic laugh, spitting blood as he did so.
Xie Lin refused further medical treatment and requested a fresh set of clothes. He wanted to have one last dinner with Lin Junqing. He knew that after today, Lin Junqing might never dine with him again.
Poisoned and wasting away, Xie Lin had stopped looking in the mirror. He knew he looked skeletal and ghastly, yet he insisted that Lin Junqing continue to share the same room with him. He changed into new clothes and even applied makeup to mask his pallid complexion.
During dinner, Xie Lin poured a glass of milk for Lin Junqing, his voice gentle.
“I have thought about it for a long time, and I believe I should set you free. I cannot be so selfish as to trap someone as wonderful as you on this island for three years. After all, how many three-year periods does one person have in a lifetime?”
“I will have people come tomorrow; you should leave with them. In the days to come, just think of me occasionally.”
Lin Junqing let out a mocking laugh, downed the milk in one gulp, and continued to smile. “Xie Lin, oh Xie Lin, you are as insane as ever, and now, you have learned to play-act as well.”
“You opened the small glass bottle in the kitchen and poured the liquid into my milk. Did you know that ever since you fell ill, the doctor reports everything to me, including your request for this specific poison?”
Xie Lin knew, of course. He did it merely to soothe himself. He told himself he had ‘killed’ Lin Junqing and thus had no regrets.
Xie Lin smiled as he handed Lin Junqing a file. “I do not have much money left. Take this, and enjoy your life. If you do not want to work, do not. I can support you for a lifetime.”
“Since I was young, I never knew what happiness was, nor what it meant to be joyful. I was unlike other children. They would laugh when happy and cry when sad. But my heart was like a dark, foul sewer, constantly breeding negative emotions.”
“Those negative emotions weighed on me like a mountain. You cannot imagine how exhausting it is to exist. Someone like me could not survive without becoming a madman.”
“But since I met you, my whole world changed. I could feel the warm sun and experience happiness. The more I did not want to live before, the more I wanted to live now.”
“I know you have been blaming yourself, thinking my poisoning was your fault.”
“Stop blaming yourself. Even without you, I could not have escaped a madwoman whose sole goal was to kill me.”
“Being a madman myself, I understand her only too well.”
Lin Junqing rested his chin on his hands, listening quietly. When Xie Lin paused, he asked, “You have never been in love. Why are you so certain that your feelings for me are love?”
Xie Lin chuckled, his eyes filled with delight. “Right, I do not understand love, so why am I so certain?”
“Perhaps because love allows us to stay together, to grow old together, and even to be buried in the same grave.”
Xie Lin felt that things were fine as they were. He had not left Lin Junqing with any hysterical memories. If Lin Junqing thought of him in the future, he would not be afraid.
Lin Junqing was struggling to contain his emotions. As Xie Lin finished speaking, he could no longer hold back; he turned his head and coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Sitting in his wheelchair, Xie Lin froze, but quickly realized the reason. “You did not replace the poison I asked for. Why?”
Lin Junqing raised his sleeve, slowly wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, and glared at Xie Lin. “Does there have to be a reason?”
He simply did not want to stay in this world anymore.
After a moment of shock, Xie Lin’s eyes gradually turned wild with fervor. Lin Junqing was willing to die with him; there was only one explanation: Lin Junqing loved him.
Xie Lin laughed and cried all at once, staring fiercely at Lin Junqing. “You gave me the chance. I will never let you go, for all eternity.”
Lin Junqing rolled his eyes. Xie Lin did not have a system; where did this talk of “eternity” come from? As expected, when people go mad, they start spouting nonsense.
Suddenly, the System was excited. [Host, as Xie Lin passed away, his Sunshine Value returned to a positive number. Indeed, love can redeem everything. Host, you were truly amazing.]
Lin Junqing did not want to listen to the System’s prattle. Had he known the toxin was this agonizing, he would have drunk more of it.
After receiving the doctor’s call, Chen Dong arrived on the island to handle the aftermath. Seeing the corpses of Lin Junqing and Xie Lin, the burly man could not help but redden his eyes. He had never believed in love, but upon learning that Lin Junqing had known about the poison and drank the milk anyway, he finally believed that such love existed.
Xie Lin left two wills: one gifting his remaining assets to Lin Junqing, and another requesting that a space be reserved for Lin Junqing next to his grave. Clearly, Xie Lin had expected Lin Junqing to survive.
Lin Junqing had also left a will, donating all the money Xie Lin left him to an animal protection association, leaving not a single word for Xie Lin.
Back in the soul space, Lin Junqing covered his eyes with his hand.
The System asked cautiously, [Host, did you fall in love with Xie Lin?]
Lin Junqing felt the System was losing its mind. [How could I possibly like Xie Lin? He was so insane, so controlling, and full of schemes. How could I like him?]
The System did not believe him. If he truly did not like him, why the depression? Perhaps he was in love without realizing it. [If you did not like Xie Lin, why did you drink the milk?]
Lin Junqing frowned slightly. He just did not want to live in that world anymore. As an ordinary person who had never been in love, the intensity of Xie Lin’s affection had truly frightened him. Although he did not accept those feelings, he could not deny that he had been moved by Xie Lin, which is why he had impulsively pretended not to know and drank the milk.
Seeing Lin Junqing silent, the System raised its voice. [Oh, Host, it seems you have truly been touched by mortal feelings. The Children of Destiny are very powerful; you must guard your heart in the future. What if you fall for another Child of Destiny?]
Lin Junqing scoffed at the System. Unless the Child of Destiny was female, he was not considering developing any “super-friendship” relationships with them.
The System cleared its throat, becoming serious in an instant. [In the previous world, Xie Lin’s Sunshine Value returned to positive before his death, so the Heavenly Dao determined the mission was complete. You are rewarded with an “Ultra-Healing Constitution.”]
[Host, the reward has already merged with your soul. In future worlds, you will possess a self-healing body, and your blood will be an antidote to all toxins, comparable to a precious celestial treasure. Isn’t it amazing? Aren’t you happy?]
Perhaps it was the weight of the negative emotions Xie Lin had left him with, but even with the reward, Lin Junqing could not bring himself to feel happy.
Seeing this, the System relented. [Host, you can rest in the soul space. Take as long as you need before we move to the next world. There is no time limit for the rescue missions.]
Lin Junqing teased the System, [So I could theoretically never go again?]
The System replied earnestly, [As long as you can endure the loneliness of the soul space, you can stay here forever.]
Lin Junqing looked around at the vast white expanse. A short break was fine, but staying here indefinitely would surely drive him mad. Before resting, he asked a question: [Xie Lin said his dark emotions grew from childhood. Are other Children of Destiny like this?]
The System searched its forum and returned with an answer. [The forum does not explain in detail, but most Children of Destiny have tragic fates and suffer greatly to rise above the rest. Xie Lin was never close to his family; having them was the same as having none. There are no historical records of Xie Lin’s childhood, and even I cannot find them.]
[However, Xie Lin was dark-minded from a young age; it seemed abnormal. Other Children of Destiny grow dark due to their experiences, but Xie Lin seemed to be born that way.]
[Host, stop dwelling on Xie Lin. That world is over; Xie Lin no longer exists. Your mental state is not great; go get some rest. Your emotions will settle after you sleep and gradually fade with time. You will wake up feeling refreshed.]
Lin Junqing stopped chatting and closed his eyes.
When he woke up again, he felt much lighter, and the heaviness in his heart when thinking of Xie Lin had dissipated.
[System, I have rested enough. Let us go to the next world.]
The System sounded excited. [Understood, Host. Please prepare yourself; we are about to depart for the next world.]
